Owen Farrell's 'aura' and 'serious quality' will help Lions in Australia, teammates say

Associated Press5 hours ago
SYDNEY (AP) — Owen Farrell's curveball call-up by the British and Irish Lions was welcomed by his new teammates Friday, with the former England captain praised for his high standards and leadership qualities as he heads to Australia for his fourth tour.
Lions coach Andy Farrell picked his son to replace the injured Elliot Daly and it's a somewhat controversial selection. Owen Farrell hasn't played test rugby since the 2023 Rugby World Cup — he took a break from internationals to prioritize his mental well-being — and has had an underwhelming, injury-hit club season at Racing 92 in France, including a May 4 concussion since which he hasn't played.
However, the 33-year-old Farrell is one of the great England players of his generation, having earned 112 caps and scored more points than anyone else, and is now the only player in the Lions squad who was involved in the triumphant tour to Australia in 2013.
'You don't lose class. Faz is a class player, so I'm well happy,' said hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie, who has played for England with Farrell. 'When it was announced internally, the reaction was good. Faz is a well-known player. He's played quality rugby over many years.
'One thing about Faz is the standards he sets on the training field. He's got (a) bit of an aura about him on training fields, which makes you want to try and train to perfection. I know it's quite hard to perfect training every single day, but he definitely makes standards higher.'
Farrell was arriving in Sydney on Friday and won't be playing in the tour match against the New South Wales Waratahs at Allianz Stadium on Saturday, when Tadhg Beirne will captain the Lions.
'Owen bring some serious quality. We're looking forward to him coming into the squad and getting to hang out with him,' said Beirne, who played with Farrell during the 2021 Lions tour to South Africa.
'Any type of leadership is only going to enhance the squad. Playing with him four years ago, I've seen all those leadership qualities that he brings. There's the quality of his talent as well, which will do nothing but boost the squad.'

India take control despite Brook and Smith's heroics

England have had big centuries from Harry Brook and Jamie Smith but little else to celebrate as India stayed in control of the second test on a turbulent third day at the Edgbaston Test. Resuming on 77 in reply to India's mammoth first-innings 587 all out, England lost Joe Root and Ben Stokes to successive balls from Mohammed Siraj in the second over but recovered brilliantly thanks to a 303-run stand by Brook (158) and Smith (a career-best 184 not out). After taking the second new ball, India claimed England's last five wickets for 20 runs in just 44 balls to dismiss the home team for 407 - Brook and Smith accounting for 342 of those runs - and take a lead of 180 into the second innings. England had a remarkable six ducks in total and Siraj returned figures of 6-70. Stumps on Day incredible partnership between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith lit up the day, but India have extended their lead to 2️⃣4️⃣4️⃣ runs. — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 4, 2025 Batting under cloud cover, the Indians reached stumps on 1-64, with only the loss of Yashasvi Jaiswal (28), and will resume 244 runs ahead with a series-levelling victory in their sights. Lokesh Rahul was unbeaten on 28 alongside Karun Nair, on 7. England were in a big hole when Root and Stokes departed to leave their side on 5-84 and still trailing by more than 500 runs. Siraj dismissed England's best batter - Root for 22 - by enticing a nick down the leg side, with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant taking a diving catch, and then their captain for a golden duck. Stokes trudged back to the dressing room after a steeply rising and seaming delivery came off the shoulder of his bat and flashed to Pant. England were rocking, but Smith and Brook played as if there was no pressure with a counterattacking riposte. Smith came in to face a hat-trick ball, struck that for four, and went on to make the biggest score by an England wicketkeeper, surpassing Alec Stewart. He raced to his second test hundred before lunch in just 80 balls - the third fastest by an Englishman - and including an over when he pulled and smashed Prasidh Krishna for a six and four fours. Brook compiled his ninth Test hundred in 27 matches, getting to three figures after being dismissed for 99 in the first Test won by England at Headingley last week. Brook, a star for England in all formats, reined in some slight frustration at India changing tactics and bowling wide outside off-stump to a lopsided field and looked good after going down with cramp. Soon afterward, he was bowled by Akash Deep (4-88) and was serenaded as he walked off gingerly. That precipitated England's late-order collapse that saw Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue and Shaoib Bashir all being removed for ducks, joining Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Stokes. Tongue responded by trapping Jaiswal lbw but India finished the day in the driving seat.

Love Island, Monopoly Deal and boat trips: Williamson on England's team bonding ahead of Euro 2025 opener

England's 'home away from home' environment is helping the team ahead of their Euro 2025 opening fixture against France, says captain Leah Williamson. Speaking in Zurich the day before their first match of the tournament, where they are looking to defend their European Championship, Williamson feels confident the team are ready to go. Advertisement As well as all the hard work, the Lionesses are enjoying their downtime together at camp and are supporting Alessia Russo's brother, Giorgio, who entered the Love Island villa last week. 'The team have worked really hard to make our environment as much of a home away from home as possible,' Williamson said. 'It's been lovely.' 'Lots of social spaces and, whether or not this deteriorates as the tournament goes on, you spend every day together, but we're spending quite a lot of time together at the minute. 'Lots of Monopoly Deal, cards, different games. We went out on a boat trip just to see the city that we were in on the day we arrived. So it's been nice and there has been Love Island watching. It's the discussion around the table at breakfast. Advertisement 'We are supporting Giorgio and then just trying to spend time together and relax as much as possible.' As well as enjoying their downtime, Williamson and her teammates are relishing the opportunity of playing in another major tournament. Williamson is playing in her third major tournament, having previously played in the 2019 World Cup and then captained the Lionesses to victory at Euro 2022. She missed out on the World Cup 2023 after suffering an ACL injury. When asked about the advice she is giving the younger players making their tournament debuts, Williamson said: 'I think the game has changed a lot since the experienced members of the team played their first; the whole landscape of women's football. Advertisement 'So we have to take those things into account when we speak to them. But I think it's giving them as much freedom to enjoy the experience, but know that they're ready to perform and make their mark on the pitch. And just trying to find that balance. I would never want anybody to come and be so anxious. 'There's lots of shiny things when you come to a tournament and lots of experiences to be had, but ultimately the main focus is on the pitch. 'I think based off of training, and I'm sure Sarina agrees, everybody's focus is football first, which has been great because I think sometimes players that have never been to a tournament – this is probably me when I went to my first – you have to keep them in line a little bit because they get a bit distracted. But there's no fear of that with these guys.' As well as praising her less-experienced teammates, she was full of admiration for manager Wiegman, who has won the previous two European Championships – guiding Netherlands to victory in 2017 and England in 2022, a first for both nations. Advertisement 'Sarina is a winner,' Williamson added. 'She doesn't like to lose. She wants to do things the right way. 'She's a good person. As a player, you want to respect the person that you play for, which we do, and you want somebody that's going to push you and challenge you. 'First comes the respect for her as a human, and also as a coach. To know that somebody's done what they've done and to have them on your team is comforting, to say the least.'

Phillies Option Mick Abel to Triple-A, Recall Seth Johnson to Major Leagues

Phillies Option Mick Abel to Triple-A, Recall Seth Johnson to Major Leagues originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have one of baseball's best starting rotations. But, even with a strong rotation, one of the pitchers has been struggling lately. Ahead of their Fourth of July weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds, the team made a roster move. Advertisement The Phillies announced that they have optioned starting pitcher Mick Abel down to Triple-A and brought up Seth Johnson to the Major League roster. Abel started strong but now heads back to the minor leagues after a rough stretch of starts. In his latest outing, he couldn't complete two innings. In his sixth game in the Majors, Abel went just 1.2 innings, allowing five earned runs against the San Diego Padres. He also gave up five walks and two hits, while striking out three. That was his worst start in the Majors, and one of his worst this season overall. He started hot, going six shutout innings in a pitchers' duel against Paul Skenes. Advertisement Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson (59) walks off the field against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Citizens Bank Hartline-Imagn Images But, after allowing nine earned runs over the last two starts in 4.2 innings of work, his ERA jumped to 5.04, and his numbers took a nosedive overall. The beginning was promising, but the last two starts were concerning. In his place, Johnson gets a longer-term spot on the Major League roster. He went two innings against the Padres, striking out two and not allowing a baserunner in his best outing in the Majors. The 26-year-old Johnson takes the 23-year-old Abel's place on the roster. It's a tough blow to the Phillies, as initially, Abel looked to be another star in the rotation. After this roster move from the Phillies, Abel will look to rekindle what he displayed at the beginning of his MLB career. After a strong start, Abel struggled and now needs a reset in the minor leagues.
