
Dubai Duty Free posts record half-year sales with revenue of AED 4.118bln ($1.128bln)
The airport retailer recorded robust growth in April, May and the first half of June, with sales buoyed by a surge in travel over the Eid holiday and the early summer travel season.
Dubai Duty Free Managing Director, Ramesh Cidambi said, 'We are very pleased with our record performance for the first half of 2025. Whilst we await the final passenger numbers for June 2025, the spend per passenger is likely to be better than last year June. This performance is a testament to our team's hard work and the strength of Dubai as a global travel hub.'
The company remains optimistic for the second half of the year, with preparations underway a busy summer and traditional busy last quarter.
'We are looking forward to an equally busy second half of the year. Plans are very much in place for the opening of three luxury boutiques in Terminal 3 Concourse A including Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Cartier,' added Cidambi.
Perfumes, Liquor, Cigarettes & Tobacco, Gold and Confectionery retained the top five category positions. Perfume sales reached Dhs744.24 million (US$203.90 million) contributing 18% of total revenue and showing an increase of 5% over the same period last year. Liquor followed with sales of Dhs513.37 million (US$140.65 million), while Cigarettes & Tobacco saw a 12.24% increase year-on-year with sales of Dhs439.91 million (US$120.52 million). Gold sales amounted to Dhs416.90 million (US$114.22 million), contributing 10.12% of total revenue and an increase of 6.14%. Confectionery in particular continued to demonstrate strong growth, achieving Dhs412.52 million (US$113.02 million), marking an 62.70% increase over the same period last year and accounting for 10% of total revenue.
Another notable increase was seen in Cosmetics, which rose by 3.36% to Dhs201.51 million (US$55.21 million) contributing 4.89% of total revenue.
Spending trends across terminals continued to increase with duty free sales in Terminal 3 increasing by 6.37% for the first half of the year, while Terminal 1 rose by 5.25%.
All key passenger regions showed positive sales during the first half of the year, with Europe up 16.89%, the Russian region up 4.41%, the Indian-sub continent up 1.02% and the Middle East up 8.15%.
Looking ahead, Dubai Duty Free will continue to enhance its retail operation following the successful renovations of its three Arrivals Shops in the first half of the year.

Money & Me: ‘My goal is not having to check the price of things I want to buy'
Karen Kriska, a Filipina in Dubai, is a cryptocurrency enthusiast who has allocated half her investment portfolio to digital tokens. She has accumulated most of her wealth over the years through investing in cryptos, particularly Shiba Inu. She considers her crypto coins to be generational wealth for her son. 'I learnt all about Bitcoin, wallets, decentralised finance and blockchain from YouTube,' Ms Kriska, 38, says. 'I initially invested $86 to buy 540 million Shiba Inu coins in February 2021. Before it hit an all-time high, I sold $50,000 worth of these coins between May and October 2021 and re-invested in other coins and play-to-earn tokens to grow my portfolio." She still holds 577 million Shiba Inu coins, which are now valued at $6,400, and stakes it in crypto exchange Bybit to earn rewards while holding. "I am holding it as a reminder that without this coin, I would never have achieved the financial freedom I have now," Ms Kriska says. Ms Kriska currently works as chief of staff for a holding company called Coinvesting Holding in Dubai. The company's subsidiaries include Digital Asset Business Centre, a digital assets consultancy in Dubai Multi Commodities Centre; Reit Development, which is building the Crypto Tower in JLT, and Web3 Productions, which produces content related to blockchain. Ms Kriska has been in the UAE for the past 11 years and currently stays with her 16-year-old son in a villa in Dubai's Al Barsha 3 area. Her other investments include a call centre in the Philippines. 'I came to the UAE in 2014 in search of new challenges after I heard that Dubai is hosting Expo 2020,' she says. Ms Kriska holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from the Philippines. Did wealth feature in your childhood? What did you learn from it? Money was not a problem in my childhood since I came from a family of businesspeople. When I was a kid, I learnt that money is freedom. It's not being able to buy luxuries for the sake of it, but about the choices you can make. Money offers me the freedom to say 'no' to things that don't align with me and 'yes' to things that do. Money gives me the power to take care of my family. I brought my son to Dubai in 2022 because I earned enough for him to live with me. How did you first earn? My first job was as a technical support representative for Dell Computers in 2007 and I earned around Dh1,000 per month equivalent in Philippine pesos. I earned my first 1 million pesos a year after I graduated from college when I started my home-based call centre. Any early financial jolts? I used to have a daycare centre in the Philippines, which I had to sell in 2016 to finance some business endeavours I was planning in Dubai. However, these ventures failed because I trusted the wrong people. I also lived beyond my means. How do you grow your wealth? Right now, I grow my wealth by diversifying my investment portfolio. I invest in real estate in the Philippines, tech stocks in the US, UAE initial public offerings, cryptos and artificial intelligence companies. For instance, my Parkin stocks are already up by 200 per cent since the date of investment. I have also invested in stocks of Al Ansari Exchange, Dewa, Empower, Salik, Spinneys, Talabat and Taaleem. Are you a spender or a saver? I don't spend on things that I don't need. But I give myself a reward occasionally for working hard. Have you been wise with money? I have been wise with money in the past three years. When I suddenly earned a good amount in Dubai, I was shocked and didn't know what to do with it. So, I bought luxury items. But I realised soon enough that I should invest in things that matter. What has been your best investment? It's been in cryptocurrencies. Regardless of the price of Bitcoin, I set aside money every month to buy cryptos and my portfolio is growing. The reason why I consider cryptos to be my best investment is because I look at it as generational wealth that can be passed on to my son. Bitcoin forms the big chunk of cryptos in my portfolio, but I also own Ethereum, AI coins, Satoshi, Shiba Inu, and some altcoins. I trade in cryptos on Binance, Bybit and Phemex exchanges. Around 50 per cent of my portfolio is made up of cryptos, 20 per cent in stocks, 20 per cent is in real estate, and the remaining 10 per cent is invested in crypto projects with a strong foundation. I use Wio to trade UAE stocks and eToro for US stocks. I started investing in UAE stocks when crypto prices crashed in 2022. Any cherished purchases? The five-bedroom house that I purchased in Iloilo City, where my parents hail from, in the Philippines. It was a 'thank you' gesture to them for raising me to be a competitive person and inculcating my money mindset. How do you feel about money? It gives me the power to take care of my family, to invest in my passions and to live life on my terms. I don't chase money blindly, instead I see it as a tool that when used wisely can amplify who I am. Any financial advice for your younger self? Yes, I should have started investing earlier. I began to invest only in the last five years. Properties in the Philippines were cheap earlier and I should have invested in them, instead of spending on luxuries and travel. I wish I had invested in gold, too, because I remember my grandmother would give me gold and I'd sell it. What luxuries are important to you? The biggest luxuries are having time, being with the people I love and to be able to slow down in life when required. I want to share my knowledge, tell my story and inspire others that they can achieve wealth, too, by watching videos on YouTube, learning new skills and new technologies. But I don't have time to share my knowledge. What are your financial goals? To achieve financial freedom, which I already have. It's being in a place where I don't have to check the price of things I want to buy. I have wanted to be so financially secure that I don't have to think twice, whether it's about taking a vacation, helping my family, or just walking away from situations I don't like.

Introducing my son to Lebanon helped me heal my relationship with home
As the wheels touch down on the tarmac at Beirut's Rafic Hariri International Airport, my wife and I turn to our 20-month-old son, Dia, kiss his soft head and whisper: 'Welcome home.' Then we both cry. It's his first time in Lebanon – a trip long delayed by an interminable war. Like many Lebanese born in the diaspora, my relationship to the country has always been complicated. Raised abroad, I absorbed it through Sunday meals at Lebanese restaurants in London, family stories and summer visits. As a teenager and young adult, I would go on to live there for 10 years, turning it into a site of belonging and often heartbreak. For the past five years, I've been estranged from it. I had seen a lot during my years in Lebanon, but nothing broke me like the August 4 Beirut port explosion. I felt I lost too much that day. I almost lost my father, who was in a building by the port. We couldn't locate him for hours. I lost far less important things – our company's brand-new office, my car, work projects. After that trip, I left broken. Something had snapped in my already tense relationship with a country that was often exhausting to live in, however much I loved it. Since then, I've only returned for work, family emergencies or deaths. My relationship with Lebanon calcified into something unpleasant. But something shifted on this trip. I came back as a different person. I came back as a father. Lebanon today feels hopeful but precarious – a country both limping out of war and still staggering from the collapse of 2019. The streets are tired. Shoots of wild grass protrude from the pavements and highways. I have become obsessed with these unkempt public roads. They remind me of the way Lebanon looked at the end of the civil war. The country has the air of an aristocratic home fallen into disrepair – once proud, now crumbling, its residents unable to afford its upkeep. But still full of life and stories. But none of that matters when I see my son here. To see how he belongs to this place. He's surrounded by doting grandparents. Even the neighbours beam when they see him. He devours zaatar and stuffed vine leaves. He's wide-eyed with curiosity. As Lebanese, our link to the motherland can often be tied to the kind of nostalgia these scenes can evoke. Nostalgia is a powerful, sometimes dangerous thing. It led many in our diaspora to invest life savings in Lebanon out of duty or hope, only to watch them vanish in the banking collapse. I used to be so weary of that dangerous form of nostalgia that led people to be irrational. But I find myself understanding it this time. For me, returning to Lebanon has always carried a hint of regression. Like anyone revisiting their parents' home, you slip back into old habits, old roles. You unlearn everything that's happened in the intervening years. But this time is different. There's no regression – only transformation. I'm here not as a son, but as a father. I'm not trying to make sense of my place, I'm building a bridge for my son between his heritage and his future. In a recent therapy session, while speaking about my connection to the Mediterranean, I had a surprising realisation: it wasn't the sea I was so anchored to. It was the mountain. I wanted to see if Dia had the same connection. On a visit to Jaj – a village 1,200 metres above the historic coastal town of Byblos – my wife's aunt left some cherries unpicked in the garden just for Dia. He picked them himself, dropping them into a plastic tub with glee. Nour noticed the cherries at the top had been pecked at. 'The top of the tree is for the birds,' her aunt said. 'The bottom is for us.' One simple sentence. Centuries of understanding how to live with the land, not just on it. And now, my son is learning that wisdom. And through him, so am I. Back in Beirut, we realise the city is not exactly toddler-friendly. Pavements are often a suggestion. When they do exist, they're broken, cluttered, blocked by scooters and cars. Electrical cables dangle from poles. It's whatever the opposite of baby-proof is. One afternoon, Nour suggests we might find more space to roam by taking Dia to my alma mater – the American University of Beirut. I haven't set foot there in years. I don't often reminisce about my time there, or much else. But walking through the main gate feels like a reckoning. I tell the security guard I remember my student number – a strange fact to recall from 2001. He pulls up my record, and there it is: my old ID photo. I barely recognise the boy in the image – fresh-faced and naive. Closer in age to Dia than to me now. I'm carrying my son and pointing at the ID photo on the screen, wondering if he'll recognise me. He smiles. Maybe he does. Maybe he's just happy to be here too. As he runs around the grounds of the 19th-century campus, I remember something Nour told me recently – about mycelium networks that connect trees underground, allowing forests to share resources and nutrients. That's how I feel, watching my son plant his feet on this soil. He's connected to people he's never met, to land he's never seen. And in watching him, I realise I'm part of that network too, in a way I haven't felt in years.
