It is becoming easier to create AI avatars of the deceased − here is why Buddhism would caution against it

In a story in the Buddhist canon, a grief-stricken mother named Kisa Gautami loses her only child and carries the body around town, searching for some way to resurrect the child.
When she encounters the Buddha, he asks her to collect several mustard seeds from a family that has never experienced death. Not surprisingly, Kisa Gautami is unable to find a single such family. She buries her child and decides to cultivate a spiritual life.
I thought of Kisa Gautami's story when I first encountered the 2020 Korean documentary 'Meeting You,' in which virtual reality technology is used to reunite a grieving mother, Jang Ji-sung, with her deceased 7-year-old daughter, Nayeon. While the virtual reunion was moving to witness, I wondered whether it was truly helping the mother to heal, or whether it was deepening an avoidance of grief and of the truth.
Since the documentary first aired, the business of digitally resurrecting the deceased has grown significantly. People are now using AI to create 'grief bots,' which are simulations of deceased loved ones that the living can converse with. There has even been a case where an AI-rendered video of a deceased victim has appeared to deliver a court statement asking for the maximum sentence for the person who took their life.
As a Buddhist studies scholar who has experienced several bereavements this year, I have turned to Buddhist teachings to reflect on how creating a digital afterlife for loved ones may inadvertently enhance our suffering, and what alternative ways of grieving Buddhism might offer.
Buddhism's view on suffering
According to Buddhist thought, the root of all suffering is clinging to illusions. This clinging creates karma that perpetuates negative cycles – for oneself and others – which endure lifetimes. In Mahayana Buddhism, the path to liberate oneself from this suffering begins by becoming a bodhisattva, someone who devotes their life to the liberation of self and others. Mahayana Buddhism, which introduced the idea of celestial bodhisattvas, is the most widely practiced form of Buddhism, particularly in East Asia and the Tibetan Himalayan regions.
In the '37 Practices of All the Bodhisattvas,' the 14th-century author Gyelse Tokme Zangpo wrote: "The practice of all the bodhisattvas is to let go of grasping When encountering things one finds pleasant or attractive, Consider them to be like rainbows in the summer skies – Beautiful in appearance, yet in truth, devoid of any substance."
A digital avatar of the deceased may provide temporary comfort, but it may distort reality in an unhealthy way and intensify our attachment to an illusion. Interactions with a griefbot that responds to our every request may also diminish our memories of the deceased by creating an inauthentic version of who they were.
Grief as a catalyst for compassion
In the tradition of Buddhism that I specialize in, called the Great Perfection – a tradition of Vajrayana Buddhism, which is a branch of Mahayana – uncomfortable feelings such as grief are considered precious opportunities to cultivate spiritual insight.
In a text called Self-liberating Meditation, a 19th century mendicant teacher of the Great Perfection known as Patrul Rinpoche wrote: 'No matter what kind of thoughts arise – be they good or bad, positive or negative, happy or sad – don't indulge them or reject them, but settle, without altering, in the very mind that thinks.'
The Great Perfection contends that all of our emotions are like temporary clouds, and that our true nature is awareness, like the blue sky behind the clouds. Grief and other challenging emotions should not be altered or suppressed but allowed to transform in their own time.
In a culture where we are taught that negative emotions should be eliminated or pushed aside, not pushing away grief becomes a practice of great kindness toward oneself. By cultivating this awareness of our emotions, grief becomes a catalyst for compassion toward others. In Buddhism, compassion is the seed of awakening to the truth of interdependence – the fact that none of us exist as discreet beings but are deeply interconnected with all other beings and life forms.
Communal rituals
Compassion manifests outwardly in community rituals that process grief, such as the 49-day Buddhist service, common to the Great Perfection and other Buddhist traditions.
Many Buddhists believe that it takes 49 days for the consciousness of the deceased to transition into their next life. During this time, the family sets up a special altar and recites prayers for the deceased, often with the support of ordained monks and nuns. Practicing generosity toward others is also recommended to accumulate merit for the deceased.
These communal rituals provide much-needed outlets, time and support for processing grief and having it witnessed by others. The time and attention given to the grief process sharply contrasts to the situation in the United States, where bereavement leave is often limited to three to five days.
Deepening relationship with impermanence
In opting for digital avatars, we may undermine what Buddhism would consider to be critical moments for genuine transformation and connection.
When I think of the family and friends who have passed away this year, I empathize with the desire to hear their voices again, or to have conversations that provide closure where there was none. Rather than turning to a technological fix that promises a reunion with the deceased, I choose to deepen my relationship with impermanence and to savor the fleeting moments that I have with those I love now.
As Kisa Gautami's story shows, the desire to bring back the dead is not new, but there is great benefit in allowing grief to run its course, including a felt sense of compassion for oneself and all others who have ever experienced similar forms of grief.

While it was hilarious when a man did it, women were expected not to produce a single toot, squeak or rumble that people could hear. That proved difficult in autumn when all of Japan enjoyed roasted sweet potatoes, one of the most powerful flatulence fuels ever. If a young woman broke wind in front of a customer at her parents' shop or, worse, in front of a prospective husband, the shame was apparently big enough to drive some to suicide. That's why smart sweet potato-lovers employed the services of a heoibikuni. Translated to 'the nun who takes responsibility for farts,' these were usually older women who were sometimes actual Buddhist nuns or just wore their clothing. On the surface, they were employed as handmaidens or ladies-in-waiting. Their real job, however, was to be by a young woman's side and say, with their hands raised, 'I did it' if anyone heard a 'rear cheer' or smelled an ill wind. Apparently, the idea of blaming it on the dog hadn't yet been invented. It didn't matter if everyone knew who really farted. Feudal Japan operated on appearances, and as long as there was a party willing to take the blame, then everything was fine. As were the farting nuns themselves, who were forgiven on account of their age. 'hanji-mono': a type of pictoral kangaemono from the 19th century by Utagawa Kunimori Brainworm Remover Edo (modern-day Tokyo) was a literate city. Many of its 500,000 commoners liked to read. However, in many places, books were hard to come by. One option to pass the time was to wait for a kangaemono peddler. Kangaemono were printed puzzles and brainteasers distributed for free by wandering gannin. Sometimes described as 'religious performers' or 'monk-like beggars,' gannin were men who often had some religious training but were never ordained in any order. They performed a variety of activities, such as proxy pilgrimages to sacred sites (which could get a little wild and dangerous ), but also earned money in more secular ways, like distributing kangaemono. If they gave them away for free, though, how did they make money? Simple: they didn't give away the answers. A gannin would typically visit a part of Edo, give away all his puzzles, and leave, allowing the mystery to consume the neighborhood. People would rack their brains, consult with each other, and focus all their energies on the problem, but the puzzles were intentionally very difficult. In the evenings, they would come back and offer answers to the kangaemono, for a small fee. Many were willing to pay for the brainworm removal. The puzzles were frequently based on puns, wordplay, and Moon logic, like: 'How does one (as in the kanji character for the number one: 一) become a priest?' Here, 'one' signifies a 'first step,' meaning 'an acolyte.' To become a priest, he needs 'perseverance' ( shinbo ), which is also the homophone for 'pole' or 'vertical line.' So, when you add 'perseverance' (vertical line) to 'an acolyte' (horizontal line) you get 十, a character for the number 10 ( juji ) which is also a homophone for 'head priest of a temple.' If you're furious right now, just know that it's the same anger that parts of Edo felt centuries ago. An Araijuku aratame-baba depicted in the series 'Fifty-Three Stations of the Two Brushes' by Utagawa Hiroshige Genital Inspector One of the ways the Tokugawa shogunate kept the country from plunging into another civil war was by controlling provincial lords via the Sankin-kotai (alternate residence) system. It forced every major lord to alternate between living within their own lands and in Edo. The cost of keeping two households was a huge drain on their resources. The system also mandated that the lord's family stay in Edo indefinitely as the shogun's 'guests,' which was a much nicer word than 'hostages' even though that's what they were. Many tried to sneak their wives and children out of the capital, but they were often stopped at a check-point. The main roads connecting Japan's major cities were full of them. They inspected government-issued permits to make sure you had the right to be on the road. Some tried to get around it with forgeries and dressing their family members as the opposite sex, but that's where the aratame-baba came in. Also called hitomi-onna, they were check-point staff who did the feudal version of airport secondary security screening. Travel permits had physical descriptions of the holder, so the aratame-baba would see if those matched the person, looking at their distinguishing marks and things like that. Some check-points, however, were also adamant about confirming the person's gender in case they were a lord's family trying to escape the shogun. At those places, people were expected to lift their dresses, remove their kimono, or drop their pants and flash the aratame-baba. This ultimately depended on the individual check-point and wasn't an everyday occurrence. But the artists of feudal Japan had a field day with it, depicting the aratame-baba as intrusive weirdos obsessed with genitals. By the early 1800s, the genital inspector profession went away. Like thousands of other ethnic Koreans working in the city at the time, her family kept the horror a secret. Many feared the stigma from doing menial work for colonial ruler Japan, and false rumours that radiation sickness was contagious. Bae recalls hearing planes overhead while she was playing at her home in Hiroshima on that day. Within minutes, she was buried in rubble. "I told my mom in Japanese, 'Mom! There are airplanes!'" Bae, now 85, told AFP. She passed out shortly after. Her home collapsed on top of her, but the debris shielded her from the burns that killed tens of thousands of people -- including her aunt and uncle. After the family moved back to Korea, they did not speak of their experience. "I never told my husband that I was in Hiroshima and a victim of the bombing," Bae said. "Back then, people often said you had married the wrong person if he or she was an atomic bombing survivor." Her two sons only learned she had been in Hiroshima when she registered at a special center set up in 1996 in Hapcheon in South Korea for victims of the bombings, she said. Bae said she feared her children would suffer from radiation-related illnesses that afflicted her, forcing her to have her ovaries and a breast removed because of the high cancer risk. A burning city She knew why she was getting sick, but did not tell her own family. "We all hushed it up," she said. Some 740,000 people were killed or injured in the twin bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. More than 10 percent of the victims were Korean, data suggests, the result of huge flows of people to Japan while it colonised the Korean peninsula. Survivors who stayed in Japan found they had to endure discrimination both as hibakusha, or atomic bomb survivors, and as Koreans. Many Koreans also had to choose between pro-Pyongyang and pro-Seoul groups in Japan, after the peninsula was left divided by the 1950-53 Korean War. Kwon Joon-oh's mother and father both survived the attack on Hiroshima. The 76-year-old's parents, like others of their generation, could only work by taking on "filthy and dangerous jobs" that the Japanese considered beneath them, he said. Korean victims were also denied an official memorial for decades, with a cenotaph for them put up in the Hiroshima Peace Park only in the late 1990s. Kim Hwa-ja was four on August 6, 1945 and remembers being put on a makeshift horse-drawn trap as her family fled tried to flee Hiroshima after the bomb. Smoke filled the air and the city was burning, she said, recalling how she peeped out from under a blanket covering her, and her mother screaming at her not to look. Korean groups estimate that up to 50,000 Koreans may have been in the city that day, including tens of thousands working as forced laborers at military sites. But records are sketchy. "The city office was devastated so completely that it wasn't possible to track down clear records," a Hiroshima official told AFP. Japan's colonial policy banned the use of Korean names, further complicating record-keeping. After the attacks, tens of thousands of Korean survivors moved back to their newly-independent country. But many have struggled with health issues and stigma ever since. "In those days, there were unfounded rumors that radiation exposure could be contagious," said Jeong Soo-won, director of the country's Hapcheon Atomic Bomb Victim Center. Nationwide, there are believed to be some 1,600 South Korean survivors still alive, Jeong said -- with 82 of them in residence at the center. Seoul enacted a special law in 2016 to help the survivors -- including a monthly stipend of around $72 -- but it provides no assistance to their offspring or extended families. "There are many second- and third-generation descendants affected by the bombings and suffering from congenital illnesses," said Jeong. A provision to support them "must be included" in future, he said. A Japanese hibakusha group won the Nobel Peace Prize last year in recognition of their efforts to show the world the horrors of nuclear war. But 80 years after the attacks, many survivors in both Japan and Korea say the world has not learned. U.S. President Donald Trump recently compared his strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. "Would he understand the tragedy of what the Hiroshima bombing has caused? Would he understand that of Nagasaki?" survivor Kim Gin-ho said. In Korea, the Hapcheon center will hold a commemoration on August 6 -- with survivors hoping that this year the event will attract more attention.
