PETALING JAYA: After 11 unforgettable years in Malaysia, beloved giant pandas Fu Wa and Feng Yi will bid farewell on May 18 as they return to China.
According to official notices, the pair will leave Zoo Negara at 6.30am and head to the Animal Hotel at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES) secretary-general Dr Ching Thoo A/L Kim, and Wildlife and National Parks Department director-general Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim, will be attending a send-off ceremony.
The ceremony is expected to conclude at around 11 am, after which Fu Wa and Feng Yi will depart for their homeland, marking the end of their Malaysian chapter and the start of a peaceful retirement in China.
Their departure has left many local panda enthusiasts heartbroken. Zoo Negara confirmed that there will be no public farewell event.
Currently, visitors can only see the pandas through a glass viewing area in their indoor enclosure and say their quiet goodbyes.
On April 19, the ministry officially announced that Fu Wa and Feng Yi had been placed in isolation for a month in preparation for their return.
The abrupt move, without prior notice, left many fans frustrated, as they were unable to properly bid farewell to the beloved duo.
Fu Wa and Feng Yi first arrived in Malaysia on May 21 2014, under China's giant panda loan programme, a diplomatic gesture celebrating the 40th anniversary of Malaysia-China relations.
Upon their arrival, they were given new names: Fu Wa became Xing Xing ("prosperity") and Feng Yi became Liang Liang ("pretty").
Few could have predicted just how adored they would become. In their first year alone, Zoo Negara's visitor numbers surged by 60%, with over 1.2 million people coming to watch the gentle giants munch bamboo or playfully tumble in their enclosure. They quickly became social media sensations, winning hearts both locally and abroad.
'The pandas have drawn visitors from all over, especially from China, India, Indonesia, and the Middle East,' said Zoo Negara deputy president Datuk Rosly @ Rahmat Ahmat Lana.
During their stay, the pair made history by producing three cubs: Nuan Nuan (born Aug 18, 2015), Yi Yi (Jan 14, 2018) and Sheng Yi (May 31, 2021).
Remarkably, Sheng Yi's birthday coincides with the anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations.
As Malaysia bids farewell to Xing Xing and Liang Liang, the country is preparing to welcome a new panda pair under a renewed 10-year conservation agreement.
Signed on April 16 during the Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit, the agreement will see Malaysia host another pair of giant pandas from 2025 to 2035, continuing its collaboration with China on panda conservation efforts.

Indonesia's first high-speed railway is now transforming inbound travel and driving economic growth

JAKARTA (Xinhua): Since the launch of commercial operations in October 2023, the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, locally known as Whoosh, has ushered in a new era of modern transportation for Indonesia. As South-East Asia's first high-speed rail system, Whoosh connects Jakarta, Indonesia's largest city, with Bandung in West Java, drastically reducing travel time from over three hours to just 46 minutes. This leap in mobility has delivered more than just faster commutes. It has redefined the travel experience for millions of Indonesians and brought new momentum to economic activity along the railway corridor. ECONOMIC BENEFITS According to PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC), the Indonesian-Chinese railway joint venture has safely carried over 10.6 million passengers on 31,614 trips as of July 25, covering more than 4.9 million kilometers since its commercial operations began. With up to 62 daily train services and a peak daily ridership of 26,800, public enthusiasm continues to rise. For Sophia, a 37-year-old mother of two who commutes between Jakarta and Bandung every weekend, the benefits are deeply personal. "Whoosh has become a proper mode of transportation. Time is valuable; we shouldn't have to spend so much of it on the road," she said. Beyond convenience, Whoosh has also triggered notable economic benefits. Business owners like 45-year-old Akhyar, who runs a cake shop near Bandung's train station, have witnessed a sharp rise in customers, many of whom are tourists brought in by the high-speed service. Similarly, the Indonesian Travel Agent Association reported growing demand for group tours using Whoosh, especially among students and corporate travelers. "It helps promote Jakarta as a tourist destination, especially for ASEAN visitors," said the association's Chairwoman, Pauline Suharno, using the acronym for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. "Among ASEAN countries, only Indonesia has a high-speed train." According to Segara Research Institute Executive Director Piter Abdullah, Whoosh is not only a game changer for mobility, but a catalyst for new economic activity. "Mobility is a driver of the economy. The growing number of passengers shows that people are increasingly recognizing the value of time efficiency and travel comfort. High-speed rail can trigger the emergence of new economic centers," he said. This project represents a crucial first step in developing rail-based transportation across Java Island, unlocking new zones of productivity and investment, he added. ENHANCED CONNECTIVITY The areas surrounding Whoosh's stations, such as Tegalluar, Padalarang, and Karawang, are already seeing the rise of new residential communities, commercial centers, and upgraded infrastructure. Halim Station, near Jakarta's international airport, is evolving into a critical intermodal hub, supporting seamless air-rail connectivity. "Whoosh has significantly enhanced regional connectivity and land value," said KCIC's Corporate Communications Manager Emir Monti. "It's also generated thousands of jobs and supported the growth of a full high-speed rail industry chain in Indonesia." Emir believed that Whoosh is not just a transport upgrade, but a strategic leap in Indonesia's development. "We didn't expect such a high level of enthusiasm at the beginning. But Whoosh has truly improved connectivity between Jakarta and Bandung and brought real convenience to the public," he said. He also emphasized the project's role as a model for international collaboration and local capacity building. "This isn't just about importing equipment; it's about building an integrated system. Through our joint venture with Chinese partners, we've transferred technology, trained local talent, and developed Indonesian professionals in operations, maintenance, and management," he said. Today, all train drivers and mechanics are Indonesians, a testament to the project's commitment to localization and sustainability. "From technology to management, our local teams are growing through hands-on experience," said Emir. "Whoosh didn't just bring infrastructure. It built a foundation for future Indonesian expertise." GROWING EXPECTATION According to Dwiyana Slamet Riyadi, president director of KCIC, Whoosh is the first full-scale application of Chinese high-speed rail technology abroad, making Indonesia the first country outside China to operate trains at a speed of 350 kilometers per hour. "Chinese high-speed rail technology is truly advanced. They're already developing trains that can reach 450 kilometers per hour. So I think it's natural that China is the technological benchmark for Indonesia's high-speed rail development," he said. He also noted that Indonesia's success with Whoosh has drawn attention from other Southeast Asian nations eager to replicate its achievement. "Indonesia is now seen as a model for high-speed rail development in ASEAN," he said. As demand continues to climb and public satisfaction remains high, expectations are rising. German expatriate Ali Kurtze, a long-time Jakarta resident and self-proclaimed loyal Whoosh rider, expressed hope for further expansion. "Fast, punctual, comfortable, I love this route. I hope the high-speed rail will one day extend to Surabaya or even Sumatra," said Kurtze. "That would completely transform Indonesia's transportation landscape." -- Xinhua

Umrah agency's financial woes leave 42 Malaysian pilgrims stranded in Jeddah

KUALA LUMPUR: The failure of an umrah agency to purchase return flight tickets has left 42 Malaysian pilgrims stranded at a hotel in Jeddah after they were unable to fly home last night. As a result, the pilgrims have had to bear additional costs for accommodation, meals and transportation, believed to amount to several thousand ringgit. The group's umrah guide, Muhammad Abu Sufyan Mohd Mokhtar Rozaidi, said there had yet to be any positive development from the umrah agency managing the pilgrimage package. "Our return flight to Malaysia was scheduled for 10pm last night, but we could not board because there were no tickets. "We had to stay here (in Jeddah) with no assurance that we will be able to fly home tomorrow. "The person (representing the umrah agency) has not shown much effort to help, as promised, and I am still in contact with the chief executive officer (CEO) of the agency, but there has been no progress. "They simply informed us that the company's finances are unstable and this is worrying because most of the pilgrims are elderly, aged between 50 and 60. One of them is pregnant, and another requires dialysis treatment," he said. He also said that he was the only person from the agency present in Jeddah to manage the group. "I have previously served as a mutawif for this agency, but never experienced a case like this before. This is the first time something like this has happened. "Two days ago, the CEO said they were unable to purchase return tickets due to increased hotel costs. "They had promised to reschedule our return flight for either yesterday or today, but later informed us that they had no money to buy tickets and had to seek assistance from the Malaysian Consulate in Jeddah," he said. He added that officials from the Malaysian Embassy in Jeddah have also contacted and visited the stranded pilgrims. He also requested help from any party willing and able to assist them in returning to Malaysia as soon as possible. "I hope for some assistance from any parties that can help us get home soon," he said. Yesterday, Muhammad Abu Sufyan uploaded a video to social media highlighting the plight of the pilgrims stranded in Jeddah. He expressed hope that the video would be widely shared, prompting the relevant authorities to step in and resolve the matter.

Direct flights between Pontianak, Kuching and KL to boost tourism, economic ties

Speaking at the launch of AirAsia's flight routes between Kuching, Kuala Lumpur and Pontianak, held in conjunction with the Sarawak Travel Fair 2025 at Ayani Megamall here yesterday, he said the reinstated services would not only boost tourism, but also strengthen economic and trade relations between the two countries. 'In addition to tourism, it will also facilitate access to educational and healthcare services in Malaysia, especially in Sarawak,' he said. Azizul added that the initiative aligns well with Visit Malaysia Year 2026, during which a wide range of tourism, education, and cultural programmes are expected to take place across the country. 'Last year alone, some 500,000 West Kalimantan residents entered Sarawak via land, while nearly 400,000 Malaysians travelled to West Kalimantan through the same means. 'This clearly demonstrates the strong tourism, education, and trade potential between Sarawak and West Kalimantan — a potential that will only grow stronger with improved flight connectivity,' he remarked. He noted that Sarawak and West Kalimantan share the longest land border between Malaysia and Indonesia, stretching approximately 900 kilometres. 'West Kalimantan is the only Indonesian province with the highest number of land entry points into Malaysia. These include the Tebedu–Entikong, Biawak–Aruk, and Lubok Antu–Nanga Badau crossings,' he said. Meanwhile, Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) marketing director Barbara Benjamin Atan said the Sarawak Travel Fair 2025, held from July 25 to 27, aims to promote tourism, healthcare, and education ties between Sarawak and West Kalimantan. She said the event reinforces Sarawak's image as a trusted tourism partner committed to long-term collaboration, marked by the participation of over 40 delegates from Sarawak. 'STB remains committed to working closely with industry partners in West Kalimantan. We believe that with shared commitment, mutual trust and strong communication, we can build a sustainable tourism relationship that benefits both regions,' she added.
