Gov Law College Ernakulam celebrates 150 years of legacy
Addressing the gathering, the governor praised the college for its enduring contribution to the legal and civic life of Kerala and the nation. "The students from the Govt Law College immensely contributed to the growth of the state and the country, with many alumni occupying key positions in the judicial service," he said.
In his address, Chief Justice Jamdar highlighted the growing significance of advocates in an increasingly complex society.
"As laws become more detailed and comprehensive, it becomes harder for people to understand and comply. This is where the role of advocates becomes crucial," he noted, emphasizing the need for legal professionals to help bridge this gap.
The event also featured a felicitation ceremony honouring several sitting judges of the high court who are alumni of the institution. Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden also addressed the gathering.
College principal Bindu M Nambiar in her presidential address acknowledged ongoing infrastructural challenges despite the institution's proud legacy. She, however, expressed optimism, announcing that the college secured corporate social responsibility funds for constructing a new main block on the historic site of the old legislative hall of the erstwhile Cochin state.

Governor reappoints interim VCs, irks govt
T'puram: The rift between LDF govt and governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar widened further on Friday after he, as the chancellor, reappointed Ciza Thomas and K Sivaprasad as interim vice-chancellors (VC) of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) and Kerala University of Digital Sciences. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now They will serve for six months or until a permanent VC is appointed, whichever comes first. Soon after Raj Bhavan issued the order, Thomas and Sivaprasad assumed office in their respective positions Raj Bhavan said that it issued the appointment orders using powers under Section 13(7) of the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University Act, 2015 and Section 11(10) of the Kerala University of Digital Sciences Act, 2021. It also cited the Supreme Court order on July 30, 2025. On Wednesday, the apex court ruled that the governor has the authority to appoint eligible candidates as interim vice-chancellors for a period of six months, as per the respective university Acts. The appointments drew sharp criticism from the state govt as the governor rejected the panels it had submitted earlier. Higher education minister R Bindu called the reappointments a clear violation of the Supreme Court's order and its intent. She accused the governor of trying to sideline the state's role in university affairs and said the govt would consider legal steps to challenge the governor's move. Law minister P Rajeeve said that the governor had undermined the spirit of the Supreme Court order. He pointed out that while the apex court allowed the governor to appoint new interim VCs or reappoint former ones, it clearly stated that such appointments must follow the provisions of the University Act and related rules. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now CPM state secretary M V Govindan also criticized the governor, saying that the governor appointed interim VCs by violating the ruling of the Supreme Court. The apex court had asked both the governor and the govt to work out a plan for the appointment of permanent vice-chancellors in universities so that the interests of students, the primary stakeholders, would be protected.

Caught In Prostitution Scandal, Actress-Turned-Politician Plans ‘Dirty Picture' Of Her Own
The arrest of popular South Indian actress Bhuvaneswari on charges of prostitution in 2009 sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry. Known for her breakout role as a villain in the hit TV serial Gokulam Veedu, she had become a familiar face on both the small and big screens. After making her lead debut in the film ' Kurkure ', Bhuvaneswari's career was on the rise, until her sudden arrest changed everything. In 2009, actress Bhuvaneswari was arrested from her home following a tip-off, accused of involvement in a prostitution racket. Along with her, two young models and two others were also apprehended. The arrest was reportedly based on complaints from neighbors who suspected indecent activities at her residence. According to the Times of India, phone records revealed Bhuvaneswari's connections with politicians and high-ranking government officials. During questioning, she allegedly expressed willingness to disclose the names of other actresses involved in prostitution, provided the police were not influenced by political pressure. Police also recovered contact details of suspected middlemen from the seized phones. Bhuvaneswari maintained that she had not engaged in any indecent act and claimed she was simply spending time with friends at the time of her arrest. However, reports suggested she had earned crores through this alleged "business." The two women detained with her were later sent to a government rescue home. The actress was also reportedly involved in a separate case, accused of threatening a politician's son and extorting Rs 50 crore. Media reports claimed she had lived with him for a period. There were reports that Bhuvaneswari amassed crores of rupees through prostitution, with top leaders also implicated. The prostitution allegations had a significant impact on Bhuvaneswari's film career. Although she continued acting for a few years, she eventually left the industry and entered politics, dismissing the charges as part of a larger conspiracy. About three years after the controversy, Bhuvaneswari joined the All India Moovendar Munnani Kazhagam and currently serves as president of the party's women's wing. She has publicly stated that she was subjected to police harassment following her arrest for alleged indecent acts. Bhuvaneswari, now 50, is best known for her role in the Tamil film Boys. She also alleged that intervention by certain DMK leaders influenced the case against her, leading to its weakening. Though there were claims that she ran a brothel involving models from various states at her residence, she was eventually acquitted of all charges. Seven years ago, reports suggested Bhuvaneswari aspired to star in a film akin to Vidya Balan's 'The Dirty Picture'. It was speculated that she wished to produce a film based on her own life and had approached several producers with the script.
