A lonely footballer breathes life into clay
One such heartening collaboration at the just-concluded Cannes 2025 bears a stamp of India. A Doll Made Up of Clay - part of the official selection for the students' competition at the fest - is written and directed by Kokob Gebrehaweria Tesfay, an Ethiopian student of Kolkata's Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), and recipient of the ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations) African Scholarship.
Produced by a fellow student, Sahil Manoj Ingle, this 23-min short features a multiracial, multinational team, including a Bangladeshi editor, Mahmud Abu Naser. It blends Yoruba and Bengali dialogues, and is about a Nigerian footballer in Kolkata, played by Ibrahim Ahmed -- a Nigerian footballer in Kolkata. It is, as Kokob told me in an interview on the eve of his Cannes premiere, 'a collective effort' and a truly international creation. In the film, Ibrahim plays Oluwaseyi, a youngster stranded in India after an injury stalled his dream of building a career in football. Battling loneliness, depression, financial deprivation and racism, Oluwaseyi finds solace in the arms of a woman (played by Geeta Doshi), who is haunted by her past. Kokob, grandson of a priest from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, brings his awareness of Christian imagery and African folklore to the film, in addition to his observations of Hindu iconography. Oluwaseyi is Christian. A painting of Jesus' mother, Mary, is given prominence, while the rosary is a constant presence. In his desperation to repair mind and body, Oluwaseyi turns to a healing tradition from his homeland, amalgamating it with a belief articulated by an elderly local who sculpts Durga idols - the common factor in both is faith in the power and divinity of clay. Indian filmmakers have often been guilty of stereotyping and exoticising people of Africa, on rare occasions when they have been represented on screen here. Sudani from Nigeria, a 2018 Malayalam hit directed by Zakariya Mohammed, is an uncommon example of Indian cinema featuring an important African character portrayed with empathy. That film was charming, but it steered clear of the racism prevalent in India. In A Doll Made Up of Clay, Kokob boldly addresses this truth despite his fondness for Kolkata, which he now calls 'my second home', and India, which he describes as 'the home of cinema'. He is conscious of the difference between his own experience of the country, as a light-complexioned African, in contrast with Ibrahim, whose black skin and Muslim name have made him the target of prejudice. His film, Kokob said, 'is 80% Ibrahim's story, and 20% fiction'. The overlap between the pain of an actual person and a scripted version of him is mirrored by cinematographer Vinod Kumar's frames capturing a desolate, muddied Kolkata, and the poignance conveyed by sound designer Soham Pal, along with music composer Himangshu Saikia. The film urges us to introspect, even while being a cause for celebration since it showcases SRFTI's - and India's - laudable effort to nurture and partner with global talent. 'At this time full of conflict,' Kokob told me, 'it's an awesome feeling that as people from four different countries, we have come together for art. The world is going through a hard time, but we have become one for cinema.' (Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this column are that of the writer. David Corenswet's ‘Superman' Soars Past Brad Pitt's ‘F1' for 3rd Biggest Hollywood Weekend Opening in India
David Corenswet's Superman soared at the Indian box office, earning an impressive Rs 25.50 crore during its opening weekend. This performance secured the third-biggest Hollywood opening in India, surpassing Brad Pitt's F1. While Superman couldn't eclipse Jurassic Park: Birth or Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, its debut marks a significant win for Warner Bros. David Corenswet 's much-anticipated debut as the Superman has taken flight at the Indian box office, registering an impressive Rs 25.50 crore over its opening weekend. The new Superman film has outperformed Brad Pitt 's adrenaline-fueled F1, which clocked Rs 21.4 crore, securing the third-biggest Hollywood opening weekend ever in India. Mohit Suri Spills On 20 Years In Bollywood - Ahaan & Aneet, Alia Bhatt Dream Collab & More Released across multiple languages and formats, including 3D, Superman enjoyed a strong three-day run. The film opened on Friday with Rs 7 crore, gained momentum on Saturday with Rs 9.5 crore, and held steady on Sunday with an estimated Rs 9 crore. The multilingual release strategy contributed significantly to its reach, with the English and Hindi versions accounting for the bulk of the earnings. Brad Pitt's F1, despite its high-octane action and critical buzz, couldn't match the iconic appeal of Superman. With Rs 21.4 crore, it delivered a respectable performance but fell short of the box office power of the red-caped superhero. However, Superman couldn't leap over the towering success of Jurassic Park: Birth, headlined by Scarlett Johansson , which remains the highest Hollywood opening in India of 2025 with Rs 39 crore. The sci-fi thriller blended nostalgia and spectacle, drawing massive footfalls across metros and tier-2 cities alike. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! The film has received positive word-of-mouth for Corenswet and James Gunn 's fresh take on the character, action sequences, and emotional depth, potentially giving it long legs beyond the first weekend. Radhika Merchant's Shubh Aashirwaad lehenga celebrated Mukesh and Nita Ambani's son Anant Ambani's love for... Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant commemorated their first-year wedding anniversary on 12 July, 2025. It was a three-day grand celebration hosted from July 12 to July 14, 2024, and was considered one of the most lavish events witnessed in India. Radhika Merchant, who always fascinates people with her incredible fashion choices, left everyone stunned with her impeccable pre-wedding and wedding outfits. Among her many looks, the Ambani bahu captivated everyone with her breathtaking Shubh Aashirwaad ceremony attire, which reflected art, love and tradition. Radhika's unique custom lehenga was designed by ace courtiers Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla. The hand-painted attire perfectly showcased a blend of traditional craftmanship and contemporary elegance. Renowned Indian artist and sculptor Jayasri Burman hand-painted a special Italian canvas on the lehenga's 12 panels, celebrating Anant's union with Radhika through a deep and meaningful imagery. Jayasri's quintessential aesthetic depicted Anant's fondness for animals, especially elephants that are considered beautiful and auspicious. The lehenga was embroidered with real gold zardozi, and featured glittery sequins shining over the intricate spaces. Paired with a blouse hand-embroidered in Resham, the overall attire truly represented Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla's signature style.
