Atlanta Hawks select Georgia's Asa Newell in first round of the 2025 NBA draft

USA Today2 days ago

Former Georgia Bulldogs basketball forward Asa Newell was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks 23rd in the 2025 NBA draft, making him the first Georgia player drafted in the first round since Anthony Edwards in 2020.
It seemed destined from his high school years that Newell would become a first round NBA draft pick. Newell was the 19th ranked prospect in the nation coming out of high school when he committed to the Georgia Bulldogs on Oct. 25, 2023.
He showed his immense talent through just one season with the Bulldogs. As a freshman, Newell led all Bulldogs in points per game (15.4) and rebounds per game (6.9), and was second in blocks per game (1.0). He was the No. 1 option for a Georgia Bulldogs team that made the NCAA March Madness Tournament for the first time since 2015.
Some analysts mocked the Atlanta Hawks selecting Newell with pick No. 22, a pick the Hawks acquired in the Dejounte Murray trade. However, the Hawks traded pick No. 22 to the Nets to acquire Kristaps Porzingis from the Celtics the day before the draft.
Then, on draft day, the Hawks dealt pick No. 13 (acquired from Sacramento in a trade for Kevin Huerter) to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for pick No. 23 and an unprotected first from 2026. It will be the more valuable one of the two first rounders the Pelicans own in 2026 (theirs and Milwaukee's).
The Hawks selection of Newell is reminiscent of when the Falcons drafted Jalon Walker with the 15th pick to keep him in Georgia. It's easy for Georgia fans to root for a former Bulldog on an Atlanta team, and now, Georgia fans get to watch two former Bulldogs grow into stars in two different sports.

Logano keeps lead for first 43 laps after winning pole at rain-delayed NASCAR Cup race at Atlanta

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — With Joey Logano in the lead, the NASCAR Cup Series at Atlanta resumed following a rain delay Saturday night. After winning the pole, Logano led the first 36 laps before light rain forced the first caution. Drivers remained on the track before being sent to pit road on Lap 43. The race resumed following a delay of about 15 minutes. The Atlanta race at EchoPark Speedway, formerly known as Atlanta Motor Speedway, is the debut of the 32-driver In-Season Challenge, a five-race, bracket-style tournament. The 32 drivers in the In-Season Challenge had yellow banners on their windshield. Denny Hamlin is the No. 1 seed in the tournament. Chase Briscoe, who held off Hamlin for his first win for Joe Gibbs Racing last week at Pocono Raceway, is the No. 2 seed. A $1 million prize awaits the winner as part of a new media rights deal that includes TNT. Led by Logano on the pole, each of Team Penske's three drivers started on the first two rows. Logano was joined by Josh Berry on the front row, and Berry drives for Wood Brothers but has a technical alliance with Team Penske. Overall, Ford had the top eight spots in the field. Austin Cindric was in second when rain forced the caution. Weather woes Lightning and rain delayed qualifying Friday and the Xfinity race won by Nick Sanchez late Friday night. More lightning and rain threatened Saturday night's race. Fans were encouraged to leave the stands about 90 minutes before the race due to severe weather in the area but were allowed to return as pre-race were conducted as planned. What to watch for in tonight's NASCAR Cup race at Atlanta

HAMPTON, Ga. — Christopher Bell, who won the most recent race at what was known as Atlanta Motor Speedway, will have his third different spotter in the last seven races in tonight's Cup race. That's just among the things to watch tonight at newly named EchoPark Speedway. A new eye in the sky Tab Boyd, recently let go by Hyak Motorsports, will make his debut as Christopher Bell's spotter tonight. Advertisement With the drafting style of racing on the 1.54-mile track, spotters will play a key role. 'It's going to be tough, for sure, getting acclimated at probably one of the most spotter-intense racetracks on the calendar,' said Bell, who starts 28th. 'But Tab has a bunch of experience. … Definitely the first stage or two is going to be a learning curve.' The challenge will be the close racing and how quickly the runs come. Bell will have to know how close Boyd will clear him for openings on the track. A mistake could lead to a multi-car incident. Kyle Larson states 'I don't have any desire' to do Indy 500/Coke 600 Double again Advertisement Kyle Larson became the fifth driver to compete in both races on the same day this year. Bell started the season with Stevie Reeves as his spotter. Reeves had been Bell's spotter since Bell's Cup debut in 2020. Reeves left the team after Bell won the All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro in May. Matt Philpott took over as Bell's spotter for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte and also served in that role at Nashville, Michigan, Mexico and Pocono. Boyd was Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s spotter when Stenhouse won last fall's playoff race at Talladega. Boyd also was Stenhouse's spotter when he won the 2023 Daytona 500. Stenhouse, who starts 37th, will be in his second race with Clayton Hughes as his spotter. Advertisement Stenhouse said that Boyd 'gives a lot of information at a pretty high rate of speed, which is a good thing on superspeedways. … I think him and Bell will be no problem.' Team Penske leads the way again For the second consecutive race at this track Team Penske has locked out the front two rows with its three cars and the car of its affiliate, Wood Brothers Racing. Joey Logano will start on the pole. With teammates around him, he should be able to control the race in the opening stage and, possibly, longer. If not him at the front, then maybe it will be Wood Brothers Racing's Josh Berry (starting second) or Ryan Blaney (third) or Austin Cindric (fourth). Those four drivers combined to lead 187 of the 266 laps in the February race here, but it was Christopher Bell winning and Blaney, the top Penske finisher, placing fourth. 'These places race so differently here compared to Daytona and Talladega,' Blaney said. 'I honestly prefer the racing here more than those places. I feel like you can move more up to the field, though the field, than you can at Daytona and Talladega just because handling comes more into play here. 'I think controlling the race here is a little bit tougher possibly than those races (at Daytona and Talladega) because the runs are huge. Guys take them whenever they can get them. So, I honestly think it's tougher to control the lead here. Advertisement 'If you're at Talladega, let's say, and I got like me and Joey lined up, we can kind of control the pace that we want to run, how we kind of get on each other and push. We can really determine how fast we want to go, and we can kind of like stall the third lane out, make them non-existent if we want to push the pace and get connected and … and we can kind of go back to back with the inside or outside lane. 'Here you can't get connected as much. It's like you might get a shot down the frontstretch, a shot down the backstretch, but it's not like you're shoving a whole straightway for like eight seconds like you do (at Daytona and Talladega). It's very hard to control the lead.' Playoff race duels With 11 different winners, five playoff spots remain via points. Nine races remain in the regular season (including tonight's race). Advertisement Alex Bowman holds the final playoff spot. He's 20 points ahead of Ryan Preece, who starts fifth. AUTO: MAY 03 NASCAR Cup Series Wurth 400 Presented by Liqui Moly Alex Bowman holds final NASCAR Cup playoff spot with 9 races left in regular season Alex Bowman has a 20-point lead on Ryan Preece going into Saturday night's race at EchoPark Speedway in Hampton, Georgia. 'I think we're good enough to move up in points if we run how we should,' said Bowman, who starts ninth. 'If we stay where we're at in points, I think you're in a must-win (situation) then. But I think if we run how we should, we should move back up in points.' Bubba Wallace, who starts 24th, holds the next-to-last playoff spot. He's 29 points ahead of Preece. Chris Buescher, who starts 13th, is 38 points ahead of Preece. While there will be much talk about the matchups in the In-Season Challenge, which begins today, how those near the playoff cutline will be worth keeping an eye on tonight.

No. 1 DL for 2026 Makes Commitment Decision

No. 1 DL for 2026 Makes Commitment Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Texas gained momentum on the recruiting trail about a week ago but have suffered a couple of key losses since. Over the last two days, the Longhorns saw two of their blue-chip targets in the 2026 class commit to other programs. Four-star offensive tackle Malakai Lee announced his commitment to Michigan on Friday. Advertisement On Saturday, Texas missed out on four-star defensive lineman James Johnson to Georgia. Johnson picked the Bulldogs over Florida, Miami, and Texas. He is ranked the No. 1 defensive lineman in the nation for the 2026 recruiting class per On3. The Longhorns hosted Johnson for an official visit on June 20. But just hours before his commitment, On3's recruiting prediction machine showed Georgia as the favorite in his recruitment with an 88.9% chance of landing Johnson. 'The culture at Georgia is special,' Johnson told On3. 'You can feel the energy and the sense of brotherhood throughout the building. Everyone there is locked in on development both on and off the field… It was definitely an honor to be considered one of their top targets. Georgia is a powerhouse program, so knowing they see me as someone who fits what they're building means a lot." Advertisement Texas currently holds the No. 12 recruiting class in the nation led by five-star quarterback Dia Bell and five-star athlete Jermaine Bishop. The latest recruit to commit to the Longhorns was four-star edge Richard Wesley last weekend.
