Tax-free salary, easy visa: Why 800,000+ Indians live and work in Qatar
As Iran launched a military strike on a US base in Qatar on June 24, 2025, the Indian government said it was monitoring the situation closely. The Indian embassy in Doha issued a safety advisory for its citizens, asking them to stay indoors and follow local guidance.
'In view of the ongoing situation, the Indian community in Qatar is urged to be cautious and remain indoors. Please remain calm and follow local news, instructions and guidance provided by Qatari authorities,' the embassy said.
Qatar is home to over 800,000 Indians — the largest expatriate group in the country — and is a long-standing destination for those seeking work and higher earnings abroad. But what makes Qatar so attractive to Indian workers?
Mayank Kumar, co-founder and CEO of BorderPlus, a talent mobility platform, told Business Standard that Qatar remains an attractive destination for several reasons.
'Qatar continues to be an attractive destination for Indian professionals, particularly because of the combination of high, tax-free earnings and lower barriers to entry compared to Western markets,' said Kumar.
He added that typical monthly incomes for Indian professionals range from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh, and with no income tax, the savings potential is much higher than in India and often comparable to countries like the UK or Germany.
Kumar said licensing and visa procedures in sectors like construction and healthcare are relatively straightforward, with fewer language hurdles, which makes it easier for professionals to move.
'Geographical proximity, a large Indian community, and familiar cultural norms help new migrants settle in quickly. There's a built-in support system,' he said.
Jobs Indians take up in Qatar
Indian nationals in Qatar are employed across both white- and blue-collar roles. According to Kumar:
• Construction and infrastructure projects continue to absorb large numbers of Indian workers
• Hospitals in the public and private sectors hire doctors, nurses and allied health professionals
• Oil and gas companies, retail chains, IT firms, schools, and hospitality businesses also depend on Indian talent
'Service roles in hospitality, retail, and domestic work remain vital to Qatar's economy and are often filled by experienced Indian workers,' he said.
Indian presence in education and business in Qatar
Official figures show that:
• Over 60,000 Indian students are enrolled in 19 Indian curriculum schools and a few international schools in Qatar
• Around 4,500 Indian nationals work as teachers or non-teaching staff in these schools
• More than 20,000 Indian-owned or partnered firms operate across infrastructure, energy, communications, and tech
• Indian companies have invested more than $350 million in Qatar between 2017 and 2025, according to Invest Qatar
Large Indian firms with a presence in the country include L&T, Shapoorji Pallonji, Wipro, TCS, Tech Mahindra, Lulu Group, Malabar, and Tanishq.
Longstanding ties and reforms draw workers
'India and Qatar share deep, longstanding ties, socially, culturally, and economically, with the Indian workforce playing a vital role in Qatar's development,' said Kumar.
He noted that Qatar has introduced reforms over the past few years, including:
> Removing the requirement for exit permits and no-objection certificates
> Setting a non-discriminatory minimum wage
> Strengthening labour protections
Kumar added, 'As Qatar undergoes rapid growth and diversification, it faces a growing demand for skilled, job-ready professionals. India, with its vast pool of qualified workers, is well positioned to help address this gap.'
Impact of regional tensions on Indian migrants
On whether the current tensions are affecting long-term plans, Kumar said most Indians still view Qatar as a stable option.
'While current geopolitical tensions may have a short-term impact, Qatar will continue to be a strong destination for Indian professionals in the long run. With steady demand for skilled workers and close India-Qatar ties, it offers promising opportunities for those looking to build careers abroad.'

New Delhi [India], July 1 (ANI): India is expected to remain the fastest-growing economy among all the countries covered by global investment firm Morgan Stanley, according to the latest report from its Global Investment Committee (GIC). The report forecasts India's real GDP growth at 5.9 per cent on a Q4-over-Q4 basis in 2025 and 6.4 per cent in 2026. It stated, 'India remains the fastest growing economy in our coverage, with real GDP growth at 5.9 per cent, Q4/Q4 in 2025 and 6.4 per cent in 2026.' The Global Investment Committee is a group of experienced investment professionals from Morgan Stanley & Co. and Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. They meet regularly to assess developments in the global economy and financial markets. In its baseline outlook, the committee expects global economic growth to slow down significantly. Global real GDP growth is projected to decline from 3.5 per cent in 2024 to 2.5 per cent in 2025. The report noted that a trade shock is likely to affect multiple economies at the same time, pushing most of them below their potential growth levels. It stated, 'We anticipate global growth stepping down by a percentage point in 2025 from 2024, with US trade policy and the uncertainty it engenders serving as the main drivers.' In the United States, Morgan Stanley expects real GDP growth to fall from 2.5 per cent in 2024 to just 1.0 per cent in both 2025 and 2026. Similarly, in the eurozone, growth is not expected to rise above 1 per cent annually during the forecast period, due to weaker private consumption and exports. China's economy is also expected to slow down, with tariffs contributing to a reduction of about 0.5 percentage points in real growth in 2025 compared to 2024. The report forecasts China's real GDP growth at 4.0 per cent in 2025 and 4.2 per cent in 2026, with deflation remaining a concern. In Japan, the global trade shock is likely to affect exports, but consumer spending is expected to stay strong, helping nominal GDP continue to grow. Despite global challenges, the report sees some positive momentum across Asia Pacific and emerging markets through mid-2026. It maintains an overweight stance on India, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), driven by ongoing reforms and strong domestic growth trends. As per the report, while Indian equities are considered expensive when compared to historical levels but the strong domestic retail and institutional investment flows will support high valuations. New Delhi [India], July 1 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday shared a detailed reflection on the completion of 10 years of the 'Digital India' initiative, a mission to 'democratise access, build inclusive digital infrastructure, and opportunities for all.' In a post on the social media platform LinkedIn, the Prime Minister shared his blog titled 'A Decade of Digital India' where he stressed that while previous decades were marked by scepticism about Indians' ability to use technology, his government changed that approach by trusting the citizens' capabilities. He emphasised that technology was used not to widen disparities but to bridge the gap between the privileged and the marginalised. The article reads, 'Ten years ago, we embarked on a bold journey into uncharted territory with great conviction. While decades were spent doubting the ability of Indians to use technology, we changed this approach and trusted the ability of Indians to use technology. While decades were spent thinking that the use of technology would deepen the gap between the haves and the have-nots, we changed this mindset and used technology to eliminate the gap between the haves and the have-nots.' 'When the intent is right, innovation empowers the less empowered. When the approach is inclusive, technology brings change in the lives of those on the margins. This belief laid the foundation for Digital India: a mission to democratise access, build an inclusive digital infrastructure, and provide opportunities for all,' it added. Highlighting the progress made since 2014, Prime Minister Modi noted that internet connections in the country have surged from 25 crores to over 97 crores, and over 42 lakh kilometres of Optical Fibre Cable have been laid to provide internet connection to the remotest villages. India's 5G rollout is among the fastest in the world, with 4.81 lakh base stations installed in just two years. High-speed internet now reaches urban hubs and forward military posts alike, including Galwan, Siachen, and Ladakh,' PM Modi wrote. The Prime Minister credited the India Stack--India's digital backbone--for powering platforms like UPI, which handles 100+ billion transactions every year. Citing an example, the Prime Minister said, 'Imagine this: You apply for a Mudra loan online. Your creditworthiness is assessed through an account aggregator framework. You get your loan and start your venture. You register on GeM, supply to schools and hospitals, and then scale up via ONDC.' He further stated, 'ONDC recently crossed 200 million transactions, with the last 100 million in just six months. From Banarasi weavers to bamboo artisans in Nagaland, sellers are now reaching customers nationwide, without middlemen or digital monopolies. GeM has also crossed 1 lakh crore GMV in 50 days, with 22 lakh sellers, including 1.8 lakh+ women-led MSMEs, who have fulfilled orders worth 46,000 crore.' Praising India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), PM Modi highlighted, 'India's DPI from Aadhaar, CoWIN, DigiLocker, and FASTag to PM-WANI and One Nation One Subscription is now studied and adopted globally.' He noted, 'CoWIN enabled the world's largest vaccination drive, issuing 220 crore QR-verifiable certificates. DigiLocker, with 54 crore users, hosts 775 crore+ documents securely and seamlessly. Through our G20 Presidency, India launched the Global DPI Repository and a $25 million Social Impact Fund, helping nations across Africa and South Asia adopt inclusive digital ecosystems.' Calling India a leading startup hub, he said the country now ranks among the top three global startup ecosystems with more than 1.8 lakh startups. He also highlighted India's progress in artificial intelligence, saying that India has 'championed' humanity-first AI.
