Brooklyn And Columbus Tighten The Major League Pickleball Playoff Chase In NYC

Forbes07-07-2025
Brooklyn's star Rachel Rohrabacher helped power them to an undefeated weekend, thrusting themselves ... More firmly in the playoff race.
Major League Pickleball (MLP) presented by DoorDash made the cross-country trip from San Clemente to host its seventh event of the season in New York. This year, they featured this event at a new NYC venue, namely the Sporttime Randalls' Island tennis facility within a stone's throw of LaGuardia nestled in the East river between Harlem and Long Island.

Transaction Recap
Ahead of the weekend, the following transactions were announced:
- Carolina gets Etta Tuiotenoa, Texas gets Kaitlyn Christian & cash. So, this is an interesting and impactful move to MLP in general, because Etta Tuiotenoa is clearly a better doubles player than Christian, and Carolina's mixed teams have been a mess. They're nearly in last place though, but this move reunites Ben Johns with a favorite mixed partner in Etta (with whom he won several titles back in 2023 while the team was the Seattle Pioneers). Is this the move that spurs Carolina to success? Meanwhile, this move seems to make Texas weaker in doubles, but stronger in DreamBreakers. But, you have to GET to the DreamBreaker to win. It should be interesting to see how Christian gels with her new teammates, who have high expectations of competing with the league's best.
- Bay Area gets Querrey, Atlanta gets Roddy for its bench. A curiously timed move if anything; Sam Querrey will immediately miss the NYC event for his new Challenger team since he'll be on two weeks' of broadcast duties at Wimbledon for the Tennis Channel. So Bay Area rids itself of a capable player to have to immediately use an on-site sub. Weird. As for the value of the move; is Querrey an improvement over Roddy? I don't think so.
- As the matches unfolded this weekend, we found out about a slew of missing names for major teams, which we'll mention as they come up. Top players missing at least one day of the competition included Parris Todd, Jay Devilliers, Dekel Bar, and the aforementioned Sam Querrey, who was replaced in Challenger by none other than Collin Johns (who has traded a Premier spot playing alongside his brother with on-site super-sub duties).

Matt Klitch Media Pick' Em Contest Update
MLP Super-Fan Matty Pickles (aka Matt Klitch) runs a season-long Media MLP Pick'em Contest on Twitter, where all the pundits in the sport are participating. I had an excellent weekend, going 7-1 in his competition to remain in the season-long lead. The only missed pick was my picking Las Vegas to go undefeated.
Next up on the Pickleball Calendar? According to my Master Pickleball Schedule, MLP heads to Grand Rapids, Michigan for the 2025 Beer City Open and mid-season knockout tournament. Yours truly will be in Michigan for a couple days covering the event and doing some interviews. If you're onsite, I'd love to catch up and chat, whether you're a player, fan, team owner, or league executive. DM me on Twitter or Facebook to sync up.

What is the Oklahoma Sooners make-or-break game in 2025?

One game does not make or break a season. However, for the Oklahoma Sooners, overcoming some early tests will be pivotal in determining how much the Sooners improved, or didn't, from last year's 6-7 season. Though the Sooners were picked to finish 10th in the SEC preseason media poll, they have a chance to be one of the surprises in college football this season. Writers at were tasked with picking one game for each of their preseason top-25 teams that could swing the season. For OU, that game comes early. In Week 2, the Sooners could build some serious momentum when Michigan comes to town for a prime-time game. A win against the Wolverines would give the Sooners a real chance at a 5-0 start entering the Red River Showdown against Texas on Oct. 6. - Chris Low, ESPN Oklahoma, ranked 25th in ESPN's preseason rankings, may have struggled last year, putting coach Brent Venables on the hot seat, but a 5-0 start is not unfamiliar. The Sooners began the 2023 season at 6-0 before stumbling midway through the year with one-score losses in back-to-back weeks against Kansas and Oklahoma State. This year, OU opens the season with a favorable matchup against FCS' Illinois State before Michigan comes to town. A road game against Temple follows, then the Sooners' first SEC home game against Auburn. Oklahoma will then host Kent State before the Red River Showdown against what is likely to be a top-10 Texas team. Opening the season 5-0 going into the Texas game is huge, considering the difficulty in the back half of the schedule. After the Texas game, the Sooners will go on the road to face South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee and will host Ole Miss, Missouri, and LSU. There's the possibility that all six of those games could be against a ranked opponent. Getting off to a hot start, including a win over Michigan, is paramount to the Sooners' success in 2025. Oklahoma is also considered the most important game for No. 19 Michigan and No. 3 Texas. 3 Best Trade Destinations for Arizona Diamondbacks Slugger Eugenio Suarez

Eugenio Suarez isn't just hitting at a high level this season: he's obliterating baseballs. Which is why he's on two shortlists right now – MVP candidates and tradeable players. The Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star third baseman ranks in the 90th percentile of MLB in barrel percentage and 89th percentile in hard-hit percentage. That's given him a National League-high with both 36 home runs and 86 RBIs, while boasting a .598 slugging percentage. A steady presence at the hot corner, he's performed on playoff teams and can be a needle-mover for a contender. Granted, part of the calculation in trading for Suarez is that he's a free agent after this season. Which teams could then use a potentially high-usage rental player? Here are three potential destinations: 3. New York Yankees The Yankees are solidified at eight of the nine spots in their everyday order. Third base is the one spot where a definitive upgrade could make a difference, and that could lead to New York making a move for Suarez. Jazz Chisholm played third base last year, but the Yankees have been a revolving door at the position this year, partially due to injury (e.g. Oswaldo Cabrera). Suarez represents a clear-cut answer for the Yankees at the hot corner for the rest of the year and gives them somebody with overwhelming power to hit around Aaron Judge, who's likely going to win his third American League MVP Award in four years. While New York entered Wednesday's MLB action first in on-base percentage (.334), slugging percentage (.454) and home runs (160), having Judge, who has been hitting at a level unseen since peak Barry Bonds over the last four years, plays a role in it being top of the sport in several power categories. Suarez gives them another bat that does major damage and subsequently gives them a better chance to run down the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East. The Yankees could offer a trade package to the Diamondbacks centered around infielder Oswald Peraza and right-hander Chase Hampton, among other prospects, for Suarez. So, why is a team that represented the AL in the 2024 World Series and has a need at third base not the No. 1 fit for Suarez? The answer is a question: how many times are the Yankees going to make a blockbuster trade for an impact player, let alone one that's a free agent at the end of the year after the quantity of pitchers it traded for Juan Soto (namely, Michael King and Randy Vasquez), in particular, blew up in their face? Plus, how much would acquiring Suarez close the gap between the Yankees and the Detroit Tigers or Houston Astros in the AL? It's unrealistic to expect the Yankees to get back to the World Series in the wake of their starting rotation being ravaged by injuries (Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt). 2. Milwaukee Brewers Milwaukee is on a roll and tied with the Chicago Cubs for first place in the National League Central at 60-41. A weakness? The Brewers entered Wednesday 24th in MLB in home runs (96), and that's the No. 1 area that Suarez would improve for their ballclub. While Caleb Durbin has held his own at third base this season, the rookie infielder can also play second base and come off the bench throughout the rest of the season. Suarez would be an upgrade for the Brewers at third base, while becoming the most intimidating hitter in their order. Moreover, Suarez would be a veteran offensive complement to a young positional core that's headlined by Jackson Chourio, William Contreras, Sal Frelick and Joey Ortiz. This is a franchise that prides itself on great pitching and great defense, but it has continually failed to win the NL pennant in recent memory due to its offense not having enough firepower. Suarez doesn't match the Brewers' offense up with the Los Angeles Dodgers or division-rival Cubs, but he certainly gives them a boost. If you're going to consistently be a 90-plus-win team and not spend big money, why not make impact moves with the intention of making a championship push? The 2015 Kansas City Royals are the perfect example of embracing this philosophy, as they had a small window with a deep core, acquired a pair of All-Stars in ace Johnny Cueto and infielder Ben Zobrist and went on to win the World Series that year. Even though Kansas City lost both players to free agency in the ensuing offseason, winning the title made it all worth it. Milwaukee could center a Suarez trade package around one of infielders Mike Boeve and Luke Adams and 2024 second-rounder Bryce Meccage. The only factor that could stop the Brewers from pursuing a trade for Suarez, though, is them potentially feeling that if they're going to step out of their comfort zone and make a trade for an impact bat (the last time the Brewers traded for an All-Star-caliber hitter was Willy Adames in 2021), it should be for a player who's under contract for the foreseeable future. 1. Seattle Mariners Seattle traded Suarez to Arizona in the 2023-24 MLB offseason, and it would greatly benefit from his return. Since making the playoffs in 2022 and even dating back to the 2021 season, the Mariners have been competitive enough to be in the wild-card mix until the cows come home, but rarely is it enough for them to actually crack the October spectacle, let alone win the AL West. The No. 1 reason for their shortcomings is consistently a lack of offense. This season, Seattle's lineup has been respectable, but it needs more to contend. Suarez would take over at third base for Seattle, where he started for the Mariners from 2022-23. Furthermore, he'd give the heart of the Mariners' order a second hitter who does considerable damage, taking pressure off Cal Raleigh to play hero. Rookie Ben Williamson has been respectable at third base, but the Mariners can't expect to get to the playoffs and then make noise relying on internal growth. They need to make a splash and get proven, impact hitters like Suarez. And if Julio Rodriguez gets hot late in the season or, say, J.P. Crawford or Dylan Moore starts to slug with more frequency, then Seattle has an even more balanced offense and arguably its best attack since 2022. Of course, this would complement a rotation that's arguably the best in the AL, one that includes Luis Castillo, Logan Gilbert, Bryan Woo and more. Seattle could base a trade offer for Suarez around a combination of its young pitchers, including two or more of Brandyn Garcia, Michael Morales, Teddy McGraw and Ahston Izzi. The Mariners are 54-47, a current wild-card team and five games behind the Astros for first place in the AL West. If now isn't the time to make a push, then when is? Giants Roll With Russell Wilson As QB1 Amid Jaxson Dart Spotlight

The New York spotlight is focused on Jaxson Dart, and he is what the New York Giants hope will be their quarterback of the future. The future is not here yet. For all the attention Dart is getting as a first-round draft pick, coach Brian Daboll made it clear when training camp opened Wednesday that the plan is still for Russell Wilson to be the guy at football's most important position. "These guys will be out here competing, but Russ is our starter," Daboll said. Wilson took all the first-team snaps in the first practice of camp, with Dart and journeyman Jameis Winston alternating going second and third. Dart threw an interception in his first throw of 11-on-11 team drills. Wilson told his younger teammate to focus on the next play and the rookie's subsequent throw went for a touchdown. "I think they're working well together," veteran defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence said. "Russ is a great leader, Jameis is a great leader and I see them talking to him a lot. Russ handles his business really well, so for (Dart) to learn from that and them to be unselfish to teach that to him, it's only on an up trajectory." There's little direction to go but up for the Giants, who tied for the worst record in the NFL last season at 3-14. That is one reason fourth-year general manager Joe Schoen turned over the quarterback part of the roster almost completely — with local cult hero Tommy DeVito the lone holdover. Wilson, at age 36, received a contract for this season worth up to $21 million with $10.5 million guaranteed. And New York traded a second-round pick and two third-rounders to move up to take Dart 25th, several weeks after signing Winston. Scouting Dart from afar at Mississippi and watching him up close in offseason workouts, the Giants like what they're witnessing so far. "You saw leadership, you saw arm talent, you saw athleticism, and he's a rookie," Schoen said. "He's got a long way to go, and he's got a really good supporting cast in there to help. We've got a really good coaching staff as well, so he's in a good spot right now." That spot is in reserve, though Daboll would not say if the backup job is up for grabs between Dart and Winston. Only that when the season starts on Sept. 7 at NFC East rival Washington, Wilson will be under center if healthy. Asked about that certainty, Wilson said he's "always just focused on being the best version of myself every day." A teammate two seasons ago in Denver, tight end Chris Manhertz believes Wilson is qualified to handle this situation thanks to "all the traits of a good quarterback." "Attention to detail, great leader and that kind of leadership kind of permeates throughout the whole offense, the whole team," Manhertz said. "He's been in this league for a while, and he's had a lot of success in this league and it's not an accident. A lot of the things that he has as a quarterback, like getting everybody on the same page, leading the charge, leading by example — all of those things are kind of contagious." Malik Nabers' toe saga The toe injury that kept standout receiver Malik Nabers off the field this spring has healed enough that he was full go for the start of his second pro training camp. But Nabers said he does not know if it will eventually go away or even if surgery might be needed. "(There has been) talk about it, just never really came to a complete thought in mind for me to do it," Nabers said. "But I've been managing it well, been running around feeling pretty good. Everything has been going good with the rehab, so my toe's feeling better. I'm just happy to be out there with my guys." Nabers, in his impressive rookie year, ranked fifth in the league with 109 catches and seventh with 1,204 yards. With big expectations on him, he said the toe ailment will be watched and handled throughout camp. "It's something that I've got to take up with Dabes and the guys upstairs and the training staff, but I think we've got a great plan," Nabers said. Andrew Thomas by Week 1? While Nabers and Lawrence, among others, receiving no injury designation to start camp was good news on the health front, starting left tackle Andrew Thomas landed on the physically unable to perform list as he works back from surgery in October to repair a Lisfranc injury in his right foot. Schoen said Thomas "should be ready for the opener" but left the door open for a longer recovery period. "Things change: You can never be 100%, but we're going to take it day by day with him," Schoen said. "When he is ready, he'll be out there, but we anticipate him to be ready for the opener."
