Rohit sets India best time en route 100m butterfly gold

The Hindu22-06-2025
Armed with his new-found mental strength, B. Benediction Rohit set a India best time on his way to claim the men's 100m butterfly gold on the opening day of the National aquatics championships at the Kalinga Stadium Aquatic Centre here on Sunday.
Rohit, who was born with a broken right thigh bone and took to swimming for physical fitness, clocked 52.50 to achieve his target of erasing Virdhawal Khade's India best mark of 52.79 and co-competitor Sajan Prakash's four-year-old meet record of 53.24. Sajan finished second with 53.51.
'I focused on my own race. Overthinking and the pressure of competition affected my performance in the past. My coach Nihar Ameen worked more on the mental side of my game,' said Rohit, who timed 54.4 in the last edition and 53.8 in the National Games, about his steady progress.
Even as she missed the meet record by 0.37 second, Harshitha Jayram lowered her personal best by nearly three seconds to time 2:37.72 and clinch the women's 200m breaststroke gold.
Bhavya Sachdeva overcame a forgettable performance a year ago to match her personal best (4:26.66) for the 400m freestyle crown.
Home favourite Shristi Upadhaya and Astha Choudhury clocked an identical 1:03.50 to share the 100m butterfly gold. Paris Olympian Dhinidhi Desinghu took the bronze with 1:03.52.
Karnataka, comprising Vihitha Nayana Loganathan, Meenakshi Menon, Trisha Sindhu S. and Dhinidhi, won the women's 4x200m freestyle relay title with a new meet record.
The results (winners only): Men: 200m freestyle: Aneesh Gowda (Kar) 1:50.85; 200m breaststroke: Danush Suresh (TN) 2:19.17; 100m butterfly: B. Benediction Rohit (TN) 52.57 (NMR, Old 53.24, Sajan Prakash, 2021); 4x200m freestyle relay: Karnataka 7:40.90.

‘Khelte rehna': Yashasvi Jaiswal reveals Rohit Sharma's message on Day 3 of Oval Test

Rohit Sharma was present at the Oval on Day 3 of the fifth Test and he saw quite a show with the bat from India, with Akash Deep scoring a half-century, Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring his second ton of the series and Washington Sundar later taking the England bowlers to the cleaners. Jaiswal, who played a majority of his Test career as Rohit's opening partner, said that the former captain had a few words for him on Day 3. 'I saw Rohit bhai and I said hi to him. Unhone mujhe yehi message diya ki khelte rehna (He gave me a message to bat on), that was it,' he told reporters after Stumps. Rohit had quite suddenly announced his retirement from Test cricket during the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), just days before India set out on the ongoing tour of England for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Jaiswal, who scored a masterful 118 off 164 balls on Day 3, said that he is relishing the challenges he has faced in the three five-match Test series he has played thus far. His first was when England toured India last year, in which he became just the second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar all the way back in 1971 to score more than 700 runs in a single Test series. This was followed by the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia earlier this year before the ongoing five-Test series in England. 'The challenges are different in different places. If you are playing in India the challenges are different, you are going to spin a lot. There will be three spinners, when you play in England or Australia there will be four seamers. I need to plan my innings (accordingly), where my shots are and where I am going to score runs,' said Jaiswal. 'I keep getting all these messages and playing with the seniors for as long as I have like Rohit bhai, Virat bhai helped me grow as a person a lot. Seeing what they have done in Test cricket, how they prepared themselves, it really helped me especially to improve. Also playing with all my mates now, KL (Rahul) bhai the way we chat, (Shubman) Gill bhai, how we think about the game, it's very interesting and I am really enjoying it.'

Telangana liberates sports from political interference with its new policy

HYDERABAD: Asserting that his government was making sustained efforts to promote sports and sportspersons in the state, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy unveiled the Telangana Sports Policy - 2025 here on Saturday. The policy, he said, was aimed at reducing political interference by adopting a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. A sports board comprising former players and experts will oversee its execution. Addressing the gathering at the first edition of the Sports Conclave after unveiling the policy, he alleged that negligence by the previous BRS government had left stadiums in the state reduced to venues for marriages, private events and sunburn parties. Revanth recalled the city's sporting past: 'Hyderabad hosted National Games in 2002, Commonwealth Games in 2003 and World Military Games in 2007. The Gachibowli area was developed only because of the sports stadium there. Over the previous BRS government's decade-long tenure, all stadiums were neglected and converted into function halls. The Congress government is making all necessary efforts to change this situation.' Calling it an 'insult to the country' that India has not won an Olympic gold in recent times, Revanth said: 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning to host the 2036 Olympics in India.' World-class athletes needed: Revanth 'India has the money, the space and cities like Hyderabad to host the Games, but without even a single gold medal, how can we show our strength? That is why we need to create world-class sportspersons in the coming days,' Revanth added The chief minister said he had urged the Centre to allow Telangana to host the Khelo India Games 2026 and two disciplines of the Olympics in Hyderabad. He added that sports will have a dedicated section in the Telangana Rising 2047 vision document.

Revealed! Rohit Sharma's Message To Yashasvi Jaiswal During Oval 100: 'He Said...'

Last Updated: Yashasvi Jaiswal has shared Rohit Sharma's message to him during the Oval Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Yashasvi Jaiswal has revealed receiving a brief but crucial message from former captain Rohit Sharma, who was present in the stands, when he was on the way to his century during the Oval Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on Saturday. Jaiswal said he saw Rohit during the knock (likely during the Lunch break) and said hi to him before the fellow Mumbaikar asked him to 'keep batting' and hang in there. On the first truly difficult pitch to bat on in the series, Jaiswal emerged as India's top scorer, smashing 118 runs off 164 balls with 14 boundaries and two sixes. It allowed India to post 396 runs in the third innings, setting England a challenging target of 374 runs. Mohammed Siraj's wicket of Zak Crawley in the final over of the day meant England went to Stumps at 50/1, keeping India ahead in the contest. 'The wicket was a little spicy. I was enjoying batting. I was enjoying it a lot. I expect that in England, when you play, you play on a wicket like this. Mentally, I was ready and I was just enjoying. I knew what shots I was going to play on this surface," Jaiswal said at the post-day press conference. 'I saw Rohit bhai and said hi to him. He just told me that I should keep batting," he added. Rohit sat in the hospitality area of the ground and watched the entire day, making brief camera appearances. Jaiswal also credited Rohit and other seniors for improving his game. 'Different challenges of playing Tests in different countries, but learnt a lot from my seniors like Rohit bhai, Virat bhai. Now KL bhai, Gill. It's amazing to discuss with them, and learn from their experiences," he said. Apart from showing excellent technique and mentality to overcome England's various plans against him, Jaiswal was also open to chatting up the opponent throughout. In the previous games, it seemed to get the better of him, but in this Test, it seemed different. 'It's all about how I fight. Always, the mentality is to go out there and fight it out and enjoy. Because in the end, (and) as I tell myself that it's the game and we need to enjoy the game. That is very important. With that, we should have fun. I am proud of myself and all my teammates. We want fun. We want a battle in the middle. That is the fun. That's why you play Test cricket," he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
