Ahmad Maslan upset over poor maintenance of Telupid-Sandakan road

Published on: Monday, August 04, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 04, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: SANDAKAN: Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan ( pic ) on Monday expressed dissatisfaction over the poor maintenance of the road from Telupid to Sandakan, saying it had caused great inconvenience to the people. He said that although the road formed part of the Pan Borneo Highway project, the contractor was still responsible for its maintenance, as stipulated in the contract. 'Under the contract, they (the contractor) are required to maintain the road in areas where the highway is under construction and ensure it remains in good condition, not in its current poor state. 'Yesterday evening, I travelled along the road in Work Package 29 from Moynod to Sapi Nangoh. I was disappointed and upset to see its condition. It's causing inconvenience to the people. This project should make life easier for the people, not cause them distress,' he said. He said this to reporters after inspecting the progress of the Naval Region 2 Headquarters (MAWILLA 2) jetty construction project here today. Ahmad also shared that during his trip to Sandakan yesterday, his bodyguards had recorded four videos showing the damaged road conditions, which were later forwarded to the Works Ministry's top management. He said three stretches along the route had drawn public complaints due to poor maintenance, namely, Jalan Sandakan Batu 32-Moynod (WP28), Jalan Moynod-Sapi Nangoh (WP29), and Jalan Sapi Nangoh-Sungai Baoto (WP30). Ahmad said he had instructed the Public Works Department to conduct regular site visits to monitor the progress of the Pan Borneo Sabah Highway Phase 1A project and observe the difficulties faced by road users, with verbal or written warnings to be issued to the contractors involved when necessary. He stressed that the Works Ministry could appoint a third party to carry out maintenance on damaged roads caused by the construction of the Pan Borneo Sabah Highway Phase 1A if the contractor failed to do so, with the cost to be deducted from the contract value. 'For example, if the cost of repairs is RM5 million and the main contractor was awarded a RM300 million contract, the contractor would only receive RM295 million, while RM5 million would be paid to the third party,' he said. Ahmad added that the contract contained clauses on scheduled maintenance, protection of existing infrastructure, temporary diversions, traffic signage and safety measures. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 650 more MyLesen B2 slots for Sabah

Published on: Monday, August 04, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 04, 2025 By: Jo Ann Mool Text Size: Aedy said the programme, aimed at providing free Class B2 motorcycle licences to students and underprivileged youths, will run from August until October or November. PENAMPANG: The Road Transport Department (RTD) will extend the MyLesen B2 programme into its second phase, with Sabah receiving an additional 650 slots for the remainder of the year, said its director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli. Under the new phase, every state will receive an additional 650 places, he said. Aedy said the programme, aimed at providing free Class B2 motorcycle licences to students and underprivileged youths, will run from August until October or November. 'This initiative is part of the Government's effort to ease the burden of targeted groups, particularly school and higher education students from B40 families,' he said to the media after the MyLesen B2 2025 licence handover ceremony at the International Technolgy and Commercial Centre (ITCC) here, on Saturday. Aedy in his speech earlier, thanked Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor for his strong support of RTD programmes in the state. The initiative, which began in February 2025 in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), and Politeknik Kota Kinabalu, involved 1,200 participants in its first phase. Of these, 500 participants received their licences at Saturday's event. Nationwide, the programme initially offered 15,000 slots, with Sabah allocated 1,200. Aedy reminded new licence holders to obey traffic rules, practise safe riding and use the licence responsibly. 'The facility provided is a trust that must be respected. Those who violate the law risk having their licence revoked,' he said. Speaking further at the press conference later, Aedy revealed that RTD had seized 53 luxury cars during the three-day Ops Luxury 2.0 in the Klang Valley. 'The operation targets luxury vehicles that violate road regulations. The 53 seized cars were found to have no insurance or valid road tax,' he said. He stressed that RTD would take firm action against all offenders, including luxury car owners. 'We remind all vehicle owners not to take insurance and road tax lightly. Luxury cars are not exempt from the law,' Aedy said. The seized vehicles will only be released once their owners settle outstanding issues, he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
