‘Many still unaware about State-funded insurance scheme'

Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: George (center) during the visit to the insurance office in Sandakan. SANDAKAN: The people of Sabah are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the accident insurance plan fully covered by the state government, to ensure they do not miss out on the benefits of protection in the event of an accident. Karamunting State Assemblyman, Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin, stated that this plan has been in effect since May 1, yet many people are still unaware of its existence. This plan really matters, especially for those with lower incomes. They are not required to pay anything, yet they are still covered. 'However, many people are still unaware of this insurance,' he said. He made the statement after visiting the Sandakan branch office of Progressive Insurance Bhd, the insurance company appointed to manage the scheme. George also sought clarification on the application and claims process to assist in facilitating the affairs of heirs eligible to make claims. This plan covers all local residents of Sabah aged between one month and 80 years, with a maximum compensation of RM10,000 for cases of death or permanent disability due to accidents. It also provides a funeral condolence payment of RM500. This scheme will run for three years until April 30, 2028. Compensation should be paid out as soon as 14 days, and no later than 30 days after all the paperwork is submitted. George stated that his service team has recently received several cases indicating that the victims' heirs were unaware of their eligibility to make claims. Therefore, heirs or eligible individuals may visit the Progressive Insurance Bhd office here with complete documents, such as a police report or death certificate, to apply accordingly. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? World Bicycle Day on MPS calendar

Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: Wilson, Frankie, Fui Fui and others during the programme. SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) plans to include the World Bicycle Day Ride as part of its official annual calendar to promote inclusivity and a sustainable lifestyle. Its President Walter Kenson said cycling is a unifying activity that transcends age, background and ability. It is open to everyone, including local leaders and both state and federal civil servants in the District. 'This is the spirit we want to cultivate in Sandakan. Organising casual cycling events such as this is in line with MPS's aspiration to develop the District into an eco-friendly, healthy and sustainable city. 'Cycling is more than just a leisure activity. It is a lifestyle that benefits both physical and mental health, while also helping to reduce pollution and urban traffic congestion,' he said. Walter believes that such programmes can strengthen community ties, raise awareness on green mobility, and encourage a culture of active living among Sandakan residents. He said this when officiating the District-level World Bicycle Day 2025 programme at the Piazza, Harbour Mall on Saturday. His speech was delivered by his deputy, Wilson Thomas. Also present were Tanjong Papat Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung, MPS Secretary and Jetama Water Sdn Bhd Chairman Liau Fui Fui, and Sandakan Cycling Club (SCC) President Mohd Soffian Eting. MPS is among the first local authorities in Sabah to respond to the call and take the lead in initiating a World Bicycle Day ride in collaboration with Sandakan's cycling community. This year's event was held in partnership with SCC and several other agencies. Speaking to the media, Soffian welcomed the proposal to make the event a fixed item in MPS's annual calendar, saying the club is always ready to collaborate with the council on future programmes. 'Such events also help promote tourism in Sandakan through sports and recreation,' he said. A total of 180 participants from Sandakan, Felda Sahabat Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Telupid took part in the 12km ride. Special recognition was given during the event to the oldest participant (64 years old), the youngest (12), and a participant in the disabled category. Lucky draw prizes were also given out. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sandakan bushfire extinguished

Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: The bushfire in Sandakan. SANDAKAN: A bushfire involving six acres was reported near the road at Kampung Tinosa 1, Batu 7, here, on Tuesday. A witness alerted the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) at 7.25pm. Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station Chief Jimmy Lagung said eight personnel were dispatched to the location, some 12km from the station, arriving at 7.38pm. He said the fire team extinguished the blaze using water from the fire engine, portable pumps and fire suppression tools. 'The operation was brought under control at 8.10pm and concluded at 8.28pm,' he added. The firefighters had a tough time because of strong winds, the wide area of bush and inability of their vehicles to get close. Also assisting at the scene were the police and Civil Defence Force (APM) personnel. Jimmy advised the public to cease open burning or engaging in similar activities. Under Section 29(A) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, a maximum compound of RM2,000 may be imposed for each offence, a fine not exceeding RM500,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
