Phoenix newborn found 'clinging to life' at home near dead mother
A welfare check in Phoenix revealed a woman who was possibly dead for several days and her newborn baby near her, still alive but in critical condition, according to police.
Officers went to the woman's home near Central Avenue and Illini Street on May 14 after a neighbor hadn't seen or heard from a mother and her newborn in several days.
Inside the home, officers discovered the mother had died, but her baby was still alive, "dehydrated and clinging to life," Phoenix police said.
Officers opened a window to the apartment and saw the woman motionless on the floor and an infant lying on the bed visibly emaciated, according to police.
Bodycam footage of the incident showed police entering the home, finding the infant, and removing the baby from the home to be evaluated by Phoenix fire officials.
The newborn was taken to a hospital to recover. Police said the infant's condition greatly improved, and the newborn was expected to survive.
Police said detectives took over the investigation, while the Department of Child Safety was working with investigators and family.
The Office of the Medical Examiner is investigating the cause and manner of death of the baby's mother. Police have not released the woman's name.

Man's alleged attack on female paramedic
Police have charged a man who allegedly threatened and punched a young female paramedic in Sydney's east. Emergency services were called to the intersection of Bunnerong Rd and Daunt Ave in Matraville about 3.50pm Friday after reports of a concern for welfare. Paramedics were called to the scene to treat a 66-year-old intoxicated man, who was put in an ambulance to be taken to the Prince of Wales Hospital. While sitting in the ambulance, the man allegedly threatened a 24-year-old female paramedic before assaulting her. Police allege he punched the paramedic in the torso and the arms. 'The 24-year-old paramedic did not require treatment,' a police statement read. Police immediately assisted by taking the man to hospital under police guard. He was treated at the hospital and taken to Mascot Police Station, where he was charged with assault front line health worker no actual bodily harm. He was refused bail and is set to appear before Parramatta Local Court on Saturday June 28.

WASHINGTON — At least three federal prosecutors who worked on cases against Jan. 6 rioters were fired Friday by the Justice Department, according to more than half a dozen current and former officials familiar with the dismissals. A copy of one of the dismissal letters seen by NBC News was signed by Attorney General Pam Bondi, notifying the recipient that they were 'removed from federal service effective immediately.' For example, Illinois football head coach Bret Bielema is pretty confident that Kirby Smart and Georgia tampered with his running back Josh McCray.
