Six health benefits of asparagus (and why it makes your wee smell)
While you may have seen asparagus in your local supermarket in recent weeks (climate change impacts growing seasons, and potentially the taste, depending on the weather conditions), it is technically only in season for two months of the year, from late April through to the end of June.
Here, we take a look at the health benefits of asparagus, and how to prepare and cook the green vegetable.
As is the case with a lot of other green vegetables, asparagus is high in antioxidants, such as vitamins E and C, glutathione and others. These ingredients can also have anti-inflammatory effects.
Due to the potassium content in asparagus, the seasonal vegetable can also help reduce blood pressure – a known risk factor for strokes and heart disease.
High in fibre, asparagus is also great for digestion. It also contains inulin, which is a type of fibre that acts as a prebiotic, promoting a healthier gut microbiome.
Again due to its fibre content, asparagus can help reduce levels of cholesterol by binding the cholesterol in the digestive system and helping the body eliminate it.
Vital for bodily function, potassium is needed to help keep the heart beating regularly and the muscles to work properly. It can also support healthy blood pressure.
Research shows that foods high in folate, such as asparagus, can help protect against certain cancers, such as pancreatic cancer.
Asparagus contains asparagusic acid, and when digested, the asparagusic acid breaks down into sulphurous byproducts, which in turn can make your pee smell... funky.
Not everyone is affected by strong-smelling urine, though. Depending on genetic variations, your ability to smell the difference changes. Researchers have put it down to anosmia – partial or full loss smell.
First of all, you want to trim off any woody ends
Then you want to wash the asparagus thoroughly under cold water, to get rid of any dirt
You may also wish to blanch the spears before cooking, adding them to a bowl of cold water filled with ice. This helps to retain their colour and flavour after cooking. It also means the tips are less likely to burn or dry out during the cooking process
There are a number of different ways to cook asparagus, including:
Roasting: Drizzle some olive oil over the vegetable with a pinch of salt and pepper, and cook in the oven at around 200C for 12 minutes until tender
Griddling/frying: Coat the asparagus stems in a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper before adding to the pan for around one to two minutes
Steamed: Add the asparagus spears to a steamer basket and cover for around two to four minutes

What is actually in Trip CBD drinks?
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned an ad for Trip drinks following unauthorised claims they can "help you feel calm" and reduce stress and anxiety. The self-proclaimed "No. 1 CBD brand" in the UK has since removed this messaging from its marketing material – which included a statement on its website, seen in December, about how the drinks could be used to help people "unwind when work is over" or could be consumed in the morning "before a long day." The brand also claimed that its blend of ingredients – including magnesium citrate – "has been crafted for calm." Following an investigation, which examined complaints over three key issues, the watchdog concluded that the messaging around certain health claims were "not authorised." It has also been linked to improved sleep and reduced anxiety. As for the CBD extract present in Trip drinks, the brand states that there is 25mg in each can. The rise of CBD products Cannabidiol (CBD) products have become increasingly popular – not just in the UK, but around the world. According to a 2023 report by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), there were 100 CBD products on its public list, on sale across England and Wales – with more than 12,000 CBD products linked to food applications. Samples included everything from sprays and oils, to beverages and even dog treats. CBD doesn't cause a high, though it is a chemical derived directly from the hemp plant. While there are various health claims associated with the active ingredient, further research is needed to determine its benefits and safety. Research shows that adults who engage in moderate-intensity exercise can extend their lifespan by an average of seven years. And the results vary by activity, with studies revealing that playing tennis can add up to 9.7 years to your life. Slash your biological age by up to 16 years by doing this one thing during your daily walk — new study says
There's a way to roll back the clock on your biological age — and, according to a new(ish) study, you can do it on your daily walk. No frills, no nonsense, just a small tweak for big results. We already know there are many benefits to walking, including a boost to your cardiovascular health, stronger muscles, bones and joints, ramped up calorie burn, a healthier metabolism and better mood and emotional wellbeing. If that's not enough, research straight out of Britain has shown that one particular aspect of your walks could supercharge your results, including reducing your biological age by up to 16 years. Yep, you read that correctly. And no, it's not 10,000 steps, a weighted vest, or walking backwards. This is the one thing you need to know the next time you lace up a pair of the best hiking boots and head out. Research, published in Nature in 2022, found that your speed could play a role in cutting your biological age. The study assessed over 400,000 Brits and biological age (how quickly you're aging based on chemical markers) and found that speed made a difference. Results showed that those with a steady to average and brisk walking pace 'had significantly longer LTL compared with slow walkers.' LTL, meaning leucocyte telomere length, is a marker of biological age. Using 'accelerometer-assessed measures of physical activity,' the researchers found associations between longer LTL and 'habitual activity intensity,' rather than total amount of activity. While it's true that the more you move during the day, the better for your metabolism and overall health, we now know that you don't need 10,000 steps every day to maximize it; as little as 7,000 steps per day could be enough! But if you plan to track your step count, making your walk more brisk could be more beneficial across the same distance than an amble. That said, I love a slow walk, and recently took up intuitive walking to boost mindfulness, so I'm a firm believer in a time and place for everything. Given that brisk walking, like power walking, can have a positive impact on weight management and cardiovascular fitness, it checks out that this could also improve your biological age, too. So what about speed? The study used self-reported walking pace, providing participants with a touchscreen Q&A and response options of 'slow,' 'steady/average,' or 'brisk.'Slow pace was defined as less than 3mph, steady pace was between 3 -4mph and brisk walking was over 4mph. There you have it. A faster walking pace is associated with longer LTL, potentially cutting up to 16 years off your biological age. The study showed that brisk walkers had a biological age of up to 16 years younger, and that brisk walking could lead to a younger biological age rather than the other way around. The study also suggests that time spent habitually in higher-intensity activities like brisk walking had a stronger association with biological age than the total amount of walking or distance. All in all, this supports the idea that more intensive and habitual movement, like increased walking pace, can impact biological markers and overall health. And better still, if you increase your pace, even a short walk could boost longevity.
