Sophie Cunningham Reveals What Her Former WNBA Team Really Said About Caitlin Clark originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The first episode of Sophie Cunningham's new podcast "Show Me Something" could not have come out at a more strategic time.
Business Is Booming for Sophie Cunningham
Cunningham's profile has been on the rise ever since she stepped in as Caitlin Clark's "enforcer" during an Indiana Fever game earlier this season, resulting in millions of new social media followers and brand deals with the likes of Ring and Arby's.
On Wednesday night, the Fever will host the Phoenix Mercury in Cunningham's first game against her former WNBA team — not to mention Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner, who Indiana waived last month.
How WNBA Treated Clark Different from Other Rookies
On her new show, Cunningham reflected on Clark's status as a face of the WNBA at just 23 years old. One of the biggest revelations she shared with her audience and co-host West Wilson was the conversation in the Phoenix locker room about welcoming Clark to the league during her rookie season.
'You have seen players in our league try to toughen up Caitlin, even when I wasn't on her team," Cunningham reflected.
"I know the talks Phoenix had in the locker room of like, 'We're going to show her what the (WNBA) really is,'" said Cunningham, who spent six seasons with the Mercury.
"I get it to a certain extent," she continued, before pointing out the clear difference when it came to Clark. "Every rookie coming into the league that's how you're going to treat them. But there's just more for [Clark].'
Cunningham Takes Pride in Protecting Caitlin Clark on the Fever
Cunningham brought up Clark's treatment in the year she was the No. 1 overall draft pick and won WNBA Rookie of the Year in order to show fans why she believes Clark — who Cunningham, 28, described as her "little cousin" — needed some protection.
It was how Cunningham explained her role in the game against the Connecticut Sun, when she took it upon herself to give a hard foul to Clark's rival, Jacy Sheldon. Her actions resulted in her getting ejected from the game and fined by the WNBA — all in the name of standing up for the Fever's franchise player.
With experience seeing how other teams treated Clark last year and how it looks as her teammate this year, Cunningham has a unique perspective on the treatment Clark gets night in and night out in the WNBA.
Thanks to her new podcast, fans got a glimpse of what those conversations really sounded like.
The Fever-Mercury game begins at 7 p.m. ET Wednesday. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 30, 2025, where it first appeared.

Hendrickson to headline wrestling event as Hulk Hogan's venture continues after his death

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Wyatt Hendrickson will face Egypt's Mostafa Aly Elsayed Gabr Elders in Real American Freestyle wrestling's main event on Aug. 30, the company announced Tuesday. RAF01, the company's inaugural event, will go on as planned at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland about a month after commissioner Hulk Hogan 's death. Chad Bronstein, Real American Freestyle's CEO and co-founder, said that's the way Hogan would have wanted it. 'From day one, he threw his weight behind this league,' Bronstein said of Hogan in a statement. 'He met with athletes. He watched tape, shared stories and showed up like only he could. RAF was personal to him, something bigger than all of us. This league is part of his legacy, and we intend to honor it.' Hendrickson beat Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson to win the 285-pound national title at the NCAA Division I wrestling championships in March. Hendrickson's dramatic late takedown in the final gave the Oklahoma State heavyweight the 5-4 win, closed out a 27-0 season and ended Steveson's win streak at 70 matches. Hendrickson later won the Hodge Trophy as the nation's top men's college wrestler. Hogan was a fan of Hendrickson's and believed he embodied the spirit of Real American Freestyle. Hendrickson is an Air Force second lieutenant who celebrated with a United States flag after he defeated Steveson. Hendrickson's opponent was the final piece to complete the card. Elders was the African Games champion at 97 kilograms in 2024 and qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics in that weight class. Other men's matchups include Bo Nickal vs. Jacob Cardenas; Yianni Diakomihalis vs. Bajrang Punia; Darrion Caldwell vs. Real Woods; and Austin Gomez vs. Lance Palmer. Women's matches scheduled are: Kennedy Blades vs. Alejandra Rivera; and Sarah Hildebrandt vs. Zeltzin Hernandez. The event will be streamed on FOX Nation. ___ AP sports: Cliff Brunt, The Associated Press

Steelers sign DB Daryl Porter Jr.

The Steelers signed the son of one of their former draft choices on Tuesday. The team announced the addition of defensive back Daryl Porter Jr. to the roster. They waived tight end Kevin Foelsch in a corresponding move. Porter signed with the Bills after going undrafted out of Miami this year. He was waived by the Bills ahead of training camp, however, and will now try to do something that his father wasn't able to do. The Steelers drafted safety Daryl Porter Sr. in the sixth round in 1997, but he never appeared in a regular season game for the team. He did go on to play 55 games for the Lions, Bills, and Titans.

Fox One will cost $19.99 per month when it arrives before NFL kickoff

Fox has finally revealed more information about its new streaming service that will offer access to news and sports across the media company's channels. The service, called Fox One, will cost $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year when it launches on August 21st — just weeks before the start of the 2025 NFL season on September 4th. Fox first announced its streaming service in May. It will combine livestreams and on-demand content from Fox News, Fox Sports, FS1, FS2, Fox Business Network, Fox Weather, local Fox stations, and other channels. Users will also get the option to bundle Fox One with its Fox Nation subscription for $24.99 per month. Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch said during an earnings call on Tuesday that Fox One will be available to pay TV subscribers for free, according to CNBC. With a base price of $19.99 per month, Fox One is cheaper than ESPN's standalone streaming app, which will cost $29.99 each month when it arrives in the fall. We will likely hear more about ESPN's rival app, including when it might arrive, during Disney's earnings call this week. In addition to ESPN, Fox One will also have to compete with the sports-focused streaming services from DirecTV and Comcast, which emerged after Fox's plans to create a live sports streaming package with ESPN and Warner Bros. Discovery fell through in January. Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.
