PIL opposes Friday prayers on public road outside mosque in Coimbatore
The Madras High Court on Wednesday ordered notice, returnable by June 11, to the Hidayathul Muslimin Sunnath Jamath at Thudiyalur in Coimbatore district on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed against the conduct of Friday prayers on a public road in front of the mosque.
A summer vacation Bench of Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy and Justice T.V. Thamilselvi also recorded the submission of Additional Advocate General M.S. Suresh Kumar, representing Coimbatore Collector, that no obstruction was being caused on the road since April 18, 2025.
The AAG told the court that revenue officials had conducted peace committee meetings and the situation was being monitored. Special Government Pleader (Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department) N.R.R. Arun Natarajan said, no disturbance was caused to nearby temples because of the mosque.
The PIL petition had been filed by S. Vijesh, an employee of Lakshmi Mills Works at Nilambur. His counsel C.K. Chandrasekhar claimed that the residents of Thudiyalur locality were subjected to inconvenience due to the Friday congregation, at the mosque, performing prayers right on the public road.
He said, a huge number of Muslims congregate for the afternoon prayers between 12 noon and 1 p.m. every Friday and since all of them could not be accommodated inside the mosque, they end up performing the prayers on the road itself thereby blocking public access to two temples nearby.
The petitioner also complained of the motor vehicles of the congregants being parked on the road haphazardly thereby causing great inconvenience to the local residents. He said, blocking access to a public road causes threat to public safety by preventing access to vehicles in cases of emergency.
During the course of hearing, Justice Ramamoorthy said: 'Ultimately, we are a multi-religious country. So, reasonable accommodation must be extended by people of every faith.' Nevertheless, since the Jamath had to be heard in the matter, he ordered notice to it returnable in two weeks.

HYDERABAD: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is preparing the ground to contest the forthcoming by-election to the Jubilee Hills assembly constituency in the city. The bypoll is crucial for all the major political parties - Congress, BRS, BJP and AIMIM - as its result is expected to influence the elections to 150 wards of the GHMC, which are likely to be held by year-end or early next year. The AIMIM had contested this seat in the 2014 and 2023 assembly elections, finishing second and fourth, respectively. The constituency has a sizable population of Muslim and SC voters. AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP has directed the party leaders to prepare for the bypoll. There is speculation that both BRS and Congress may consider holding talks with the AIMIM, as a split in the Muslim vote bank could mar the chances of both parties. The BRS has not lost this seat since the formation of Telangana state. Political observers said the AIMIM contesting the 2023 assembly polls boosted the victory prospects of the then-ruling BRS. In the polls, MIM candidate Mohammed Rashed Farazuddin secured nearly 8,000 votes, finishing fourth. In the 2014 election, AIMIM's Naveen Yadav polled nearly 42,000 votes and finished second. The party did not contest the seat in 2018. The talk in political circles is that the AIMIM entering the electoral battle from Jubilee Hills in the 2023 poll was allegedly to help the BRS. It was more of a friendly sort of contest, said the political analysts. However, the AIMIM, which had openly supported the BRS in the 2023 assembly elections, appears to have changed its strategy after the Congress came to power in the state in Dec 2023. However, a senior leader said the party is extending issue-based support to Congress govt. "Our main objective is the development of Muslims, SCs, STs, BCs, EWS, and other marginalised communities. Any move to support the govt will be taken keeping in view the welfare of these sections and the development of the Old City. We have started working in Jubilee Hills. As far as contesting elections or finalising the candidate for the bypoll is concerned, the party will decide at an appropriate time," said a senior leader of the AIMIM.

Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar insists on the display of a representation of a woman, Bharat Mata, holding the saffron flag at official functions. This has turned into a political controversy, with people and the Kerala government protesting on paper and on the streets. The idea of anthropomorphising the country, particularly as mother, has a long and contested history in India. Indian nationalism has drawn heavily from Hindu symbolism and iconography, and the concept of Bharat Mata and its representation was instructive. It had unifying power, but simultaneously triggered discord, as it excluded religious minorities. Muslims, particularly, developed a deep scepticism towards the idea of Bharat Mata, and the worship of the nation as mother. India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, sought to give the imagery of Bharat Mata a secular character in his book The Discovery of India. But he too is discovering India as a civilizational eternity. Marking the birth centenary of Nehru (in 1989), a 53-episode docudrama on the state-controlled network Doordarshan televised the book. Shyam Benegal directed Bharat Ek Khoj, with the first episode being 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'. Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister, and Benegal was by no means sectarian. The episode begins with Hindu chants in Sanskrit, before it goes on to Nehru's secular conception of Bharat Mata. The point was that it would be difficult to articulate the historicity of Indian identity without relying on Hinduism. But Nehru and his compatriots were sensitive about the potential of the slogan creating a communal rift. You could find more about that in this review of historian Sugata Bose's book The Nation as Mother and Other Visions of Nationhood. The former general secretary of the Lok Sabha P.D.T. Achary traces the history of Bharat as mother and notes that there is no constitutionally recognised depiction of the concept. The Hindu's own editorial considers the Governor's enthusiasm for the public veneration of the image a partisan move. Federalism Tract Regional sentiments In Tamil Nadu, BJP ally AIADMK is on the back foot following the screening of video clips that showed leaders of Dravidian politics as critics of the Hindu religion at an event where their leaders were present. In Maharashtra, the BJP is trying to assuage regional sentiments after the government led by it privileged Hindi over other Indian languages in its three-language policy. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that a final decision on implementing the three-language formula in schools in the State will be taken only after discussions with writers, language experts, political leaders, and all other stakeholders. In West Bengal, the Mamata Banerjee government built a Jagannath temple in Digha, which custodians of the Puri Jagannath Temple in Odisha consider a violation of its singular primacy. Ms. Banerjee inaugurated the first 'Rath Yatra' from the ₹250-crore temple in the coastal town. Puri Shankaracharya Nischalananda Saraswati said the Jagannath temple constructed at Digha, lacked religious sanctity and was driven more by commercial interests than spiritual devotion.

Tamil Nadu govt fined for appealing against teacher appointment in minority aided school
CHENNAI: Taking a dig at the state government for filing an appeal against a single judge's order for approving the appointment of a secondary grade teacher to a minority aided school, the Madras High Court has imposed costs of `1 lakh on the government. A division bench of justices R Subramanian and K Surendar noted the court, in two division bench judgments, held that the 2011 G.O. (Ms No 181), which makes the teacher eligibility test (TET) mandatory for primary school teachers, will not apply to minority institutions; yet the government has preferred to file the appeal. It remarked, 'Even after the writ court (single judge) decided in favour of the school, the state has decided to pursue an appeal against the order on an issue which is covered by two division bench judgments.'
