Malaysia, Vietnam call for continued monitoring of Cambodia–Thailand ceasefire

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Vietnam have reaffirmed the importance of continued monitoring of the ceasefire implementation between Cambodia and Thailand, to ensure lasting peace and stability in the Asean region.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the matter was agreed upon during a telephone conversation with his Vietnamese counterpart, Pham Minh Chinh, earlier today.
"We welcomed the positive progress in the ceasefire negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, including the visit by a monitoring team led by Malaysia to the affected areas.
"Both parties also stressed the need for ongoing monitoring efforts to safeguard peace and stability in the Asean region," he said in a statement.
Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire following a special meeting on Monday, which brought together Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, with Anwar serving as host and Asean chair.
During the call, Anwar said they also exchanged views on global issues, including the United States' tariffs, and explored future cooperation in areas such as innovation, energy security, and the Asean Power Grid initiative.
He also welcomed Vietnam's readiness to send a ministerial-level delegation to strengthen strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Anwar added that both sides would remain in close contact ahead of their next meeting in China, scheduled for early September.

Anwar: King's Russia visit a first in Malaysia's diplomatic history, sets stage for tech and trade growth

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — The state visit by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, to Russia, which is at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin, marks a new chapter in Malaysia-Russia bilateral relations. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the visit, taking place from August 5 to 10, is expected to boost strategic cooperation across multiple sectors, including bilateral trade, investment, higher education, technology and innovation, as well as people-to-people relations. 'Malaysia has the potential to attract new investments and advanced technologies from Russia, particularly in the fields of energy, aerospace, defence, and smart agriculture, in line with the Madani Economy framework that emphasises competitiveness, sustainability, and shared prosperity,' Anwar posted on Facebook today. More significantly, he noted that the visit reaffirms the role of the Malaysian monarchy as a respected pillar of national diplomacy, enhancing Malaysia's image as a neutral, open, and progressive nation on the global stage. The prime minister said it is also a very historic and significant event with Sultan Ibrahim being the first Malaysian Head of State to set foot in Russia for a state visit since diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1967. 'This reflects His Majesty's role as a symbol of national unity and a strategic contributor to strengthening Malaysia's international relations,' Anwar said. Earlier today, Anwar accompanied Sultan Ibrahim at the royal send-off ceremony held at the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) base in Subang. Russia is currently Malaysia's ninth-largest trading partner among European nations and ranks 28th globally, with a bilateral trade value of RM11.46 billion (US$2.48 billion) in 2024. From January to June 2025, total trade between the two countries amounted to RM4.13 billion. — Bernama

The two leaders also discussed ways to deepen bilateral ties and enhance cooperation within the Asean framework. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, whose country is the current Chair of Asean for 2025, briefed his Lao counterpart on the outcome of a special meeting held between Cambodia and Thailand in Putrajaya, Malaysia, on July 28. The meeting was initiated and facilitated by Malaysia in its capacity as Asean Chair, with the aim of easing tensions and encouraging dialogue between the two neighbouring countries regarding their border dispute. Prime Minister Sonexay expressed appreciation for Malaysia's timely and constructive diplomatic efforts in convening the meeting. He praised Prime Minister Anwar's leadership in fostering dialogue and peaceful engagement, which he described as being in line with the core principles of Asean. He stressed that Laos, as a neighbouring country with close ties to both Cambodia and Thailand, is deeply concerned about the situation and supports all peaceful efforts to resolve the issue. The prime minister emphasised the importance of all parties exercising maximum restraint, avoiding the use of force, and working together through appropriate diplomatic and regional channels. He underscored the need to preserve peace and stability, not only between Cambodia and Thailand, but also within the broader Asean region. In addition to regional security issues, the two prime ministers discussed relations between Laos and Malaysia. The two sides acknowledged the positive momentum in their cooperation across various fields and agreed to further promote collaboration, particularly in trade, investment and customs facilitation. They also exchanged views on broader regional and international issues of mutual interest, recognising the need for greater economic integration and policy coordination among Asean member states. Prime Minister Sonexay reaffirmed Laos' commitment to supporting Malaysia's Asean chairmanship and expressed confidence that under Malaysia's leadership, Asean would continue to advance its goals of regional peace, unity, and sustainable development. He said Laos stands ready to work closely with Malaysia and all Asean partners to strengthen the Asean Community and uphold the region's shared commitment to dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect. The telephone conversation reflects the two countries' shared desire to maintain close contact concerning regional affairs and demonstrates their ongoing efforts to support Asean's role as a platform for peace and cooperation in South-East Asia. - Vientiane Times/ANN

Anwar has turned the corner

MP SPEAKS | Former British prime minister Harold Wilson is attributed as saying that a week is too long in politics. This means a month feels like an eternity. This was probably how keen observers of Malaysian politics felt throughout July 2025. The retirement of chief justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat without the customary six-month extension caused some quarters to liken it to a judicial crisis, similar to that of the 1988 crisis. On July 7, former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli led eight out of 31 PKR MPs to call for the formation of a royal commission of inquiry into the judiciary. This intervention from Rafizi's group gave the impression that all was not well within PKR and Pakatan Harapan, and by extension, the Anwar-led federal government. Some of them had the unfounded fear that...
