Govt to set up Centre of Excellence to mitigate man-animal conflict: Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav
Yadav stated, 'We should find amicable solutions through advanced technologies, including AI, for the management of human-wildlife conflict and the establishment of a Centre of Excellence at Wildlife Institute of India-Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History WII-SACON.'
Yadav underlined the need for periodic awareness campaigns to sensitise, guide, and advise the general public on human-wildlife conflict.
To address human-wildlife conflict, the ministry issued an advisory in February 2021, followed by guidelines to states and Union Territories in June 2022. The advisory recommends coordinated interdepartmental action, identification of conflict hotspots, adherence to Standard Operating Procedures, and establishment of rapid response teams.
Besides, a committee at the state and district levels was formed to expedite review of the demand for compensation or relief to aggrieved parties.

JP Nadda condemns assault on NHAI men by minister: ‘alarming, unprecedented'
BJP national president and Union minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on Saturday criticised Himachal Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh for allegedly thrashing two NHAI officials in Shimla a few days ago and said, 'What would happen to people when those supposed to protect the law take matters into their own hands?' Addressing the media in Bilaspur, Nadda dubbed the incident 'alarming and unprecedented' for a peaceful state like Himachal, which is known as 'Dev Bhoomi (land of the gods)', and expressed concern over 'the deteriorating law and order'. 'It is a worrisome incident. This incident has two aspects. First: it hurts the Dev Bhoomi culture of our land; and the second: the government, which job is to protect, has become predators…what would happen to people when those supposed to protect the law take matters into their own hands…it shows what kind of government is running in the state,' Nadda said. On Monday, an FIR was registered against the Himachal minister for allegedly assaulting NHAI officials — manager Achal Jindal and site engineer Yogesh Verma. Nadda announced that work on 25 national highways, spanning 2,592 kilometres, was underway across Himachal. 'Of these, 785 km are being constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), 1,238 km by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), and 569 km by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO),' he said, expressing his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for approving and supporting these major infrastructure initiatives. Nadda highlighted four key infrastructure projects under the NHAI, most of which are expected to be completed by 2026-27, with the remaining scheduled for completion by 2028. Barring the Shimla-Motor National Highway for which preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) is underway and completion is slated for 2028, the Parwanoo-Shimla, Kiratpur-Manali and Pathankot-Mandi National Highways would be completed in 2026 and 2027, he said. Nadda said he would write to the chief minister and also hold discussions with him on two important matters, including the exclusion of highway construction equipment from the industrial category. Nadda said temporary construction setups like crushers, hot mixers, and bitumen heating units, used in NHAI projects, should be exempted from requiring annual NOCs from the State Pollution Control Board. 'These temporary installations,' he said, 'are slowing down progress due to bureaucratic delays,' Nadda stressed the urgent need for a decision on dredging in the Beas river region.

Hyperloop, ropeways on fast track part of Gadkari's mega mobility plan
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has unveiled an ambitious roadmap for next-generation mass mobility in the country, which includes electric rapid transport, hyperloop in urban areas and ropeways, cable buses and funicular railways in inaccessible terrains. Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari(@BJP4Jharkhand) In an interview with PTI, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways said India's transport sector is undergoing a major transition, with initiatives like tree bank, mobile-based driving tests, and flex-fuel engines by 11 leading automakers in the pipeline. Also on the agenda are plans to upgrade 25,000 km of two-lane highways to four lanes, establish an electric mass rapid transport network across major routes and scale up road construction to 100 km per day. 'We are driving innovation. A revolution in mass mobility is underway,' Gadkari said. 'Work is progressing at a war footing to transform how India travels, with a focus not just on metropolises but also on remote, inaccessible rural areas. We're building ropeways, cable cars and funicular railways across 360 locations, including Kedarnath. Work has already started on 60 of these projects,' he said. Funicular railways are a system that combines elevator and railway technologies to efficiently transport people and goods up and down inclines. These are particularly useful in mountainous or hilly areas. Gadkari said the cost of these projects ranges from ₹200 crore to ₹5,000 crore and once completed, they will change the face of India. The minister added that improved road infrastructure will not only boost the economy but will also help in propelling growth and creating jobs. 'I am more than confident that in a year's time, our highways will match the standard and quality of US roads that I have been emphasising,' he said, adding that days are not far off when metropolises will have cable-run buses, electric rapid mass transport buses with aeroplane-like facilities. Gadkari said pilot projects like Metrino pod taxis, hyperloop systems, and pillar-based mass rapid transport are in the pipeline for cities like Delhi and Bengaluru. 'Technology and investors are both coming in. It will be a revolution,' he said. The minister said, 'Eleven companies, including Tata, Toyota, Hyundai and Mahindra, have agreed to build flex-fuel engine vehicles that will reduce dependence on fuel imports as well as fossil fuel." Flex-fuel vehicles are equipped with internal combustion engines that can operate on more than one fuel. They are primarily meant to run on ethanol and methanol or a blend of biofuels and on conventional fuels such as petrol or diesel. Gadkari said India is working on 25,000 km of road upgrades for converting two-lane roads into four-lanes and 'we plan to build 100 km of roads per day – this is our target, not a declaration,' he clarified. The length of national highways was 91,287 km in 2013-14 and there has been an increase of about 60 per cent in the length of NHs to 1,46,204 km, he said. The length of National High-Speed Corridors (HSC) has expanded from 93 km in 2014 to 2,474 km at present, he said. New technologies, like precast construction, three-ft road barriers, and AI-based road safety tools, including drones and camera monitoring systems, are being introduced to boost efficiency and safety. 'We plan to plant 20–25 crore trees along highways, with an aim to transplant old trees and replant five for every one cut.' Talks for a tree bank are in advanced stages with the Ministry of Environment and once a go-ahead is received, full-fledged work will start, the minister said. Speaking about electric rapid transport, Gadkari said a tender has been floated for a 135-seater electric bus in Nagpur as a pilot project. The bus will feature executive-class seating, air-conditioning, and airline-grade amenities, capable of running at speeds of 120–125 km/hr. It will recharge in 30–40 minutes at designated stops and is expected to cost 30 per cent less than traditional diesel buses while offering significantly lower emissions, he said. 'Once the trial is successful, we plan to introduce similar buses pan-India, including on routes like Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Dehradun, Delhi-Meerut, Delhi-Jaipur, Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Aurangabad and Bangalore-Chennai, among others," he added. As many as 670 roadside amenities have already been approved, aimed at providing world-class facilities for both travellers and drivers across national highways, he said. The minister said India's transport sector contributes nearly 40 per cent to the country's air pollution, and emphasised that green mobility initiatives will not only help curb emissions but also significantly reduce the nation's annual fuel import bill of around ₹22 lakh crore. He further claimed that improved road infrastructure will help bring down logistics costs from 14 per cent of GDP to 9 per cent by the end of the year, enhancing overall economic efficiency.

Kin of Punjab farmer who crossed over to Pakistan seeks MEA's intervention
The family of a 23-year-old Ferozepur farmer, who inadvertently crossed over to Pakistan a fortnight ago, urged the Union External Affairs ministry Saturday to ensure his safe return to India at the earliest. Amritpal Singh, from Khaire ke Uttar village in Punjab's Ferozepur district, went missing along the India-Pakistan border on June 21. He had gone to tend his farmland located across the barbed fencing near Border Outpost (BOP) Rana under Border Security Force supervision. He failed to return before the gate was scheduled to close around 5 pm. The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel later found human footprints heading towards the Pakistani side, raising the possibility of an unintentional border crossing. The BSF held three to four flag meetings with Pakistani Rangers, who initially denied any sightings of an unknown person. On June 27, the Pakistani Rangers confirmed to the BSF authorities that Amritpal Singh was in the custody of local police. Sub-divisional magistrate (Guru Har Sahai) Udaydeep Singh Sidhu along with other officials on Saturday visited Amritpal's residence in Ferozepur. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is cognizant of the situation and the state government is in touch with the Union External Affairs Ministry to bring him back from Pakistan, they told the family. Amritpal's father Jugraj Singh urged the district officials that the state government should discuss the matter with the Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to ensure his son's return. Amritpal is married and has a three-month-old daughter. He owns around 8.5 acres of farmland located beyond the border fencing on the Indian side. He had left on his bike that afternoon but did not return in the evening. The BSF even reopened the frisking gate before dusk in search of him, but he could not be found, his father said. During summer months, farmers are allowed to access land between the barbed-wire fence and the international border under strict BSF monitoring between 8 am and 5 pm. Several farmers from border districts including Fazilka, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Amritsar and Tarn Taran have agricultural land in this area, known as the 'zero line.'
