Tennis: France's Boisson wins maiden WTA title in Hamburg - Omni sports

Al-Ahram Weekly20-07-2025
French number one Lois Boisson battled to her first WTA title on clay in Hamburg on Sunday with a straight sets win over Hungary's Anna Bondar.
A surprise Roland Garros semi-finalist last month, Boisson won 7-5, 6-3 to give France a first success on the WTA circuit since Caroline Garcia at the season-ending Tour Finals in November 2022.
"This is the first time I've given a (tournament winner's) speech, so please bear with me," the 22-year-old said before offering a simple "Danke" ("Thank you") to the German crowd.
Fifth seed Boisson rallied from 5-2 down in the first set and survived a break in the second.
Boisson hit headlines last month when as a wild card in her Grand Slam main-draw debut and ranked 361st in the world she reached the French Open last four before being beaten by eventual winner Coco Gauff.
Boisson, now ranked 63rd and set to join the top 50 on Monday, lost her first qualifying match on grass at Wimbledon, but back on her favoured surface clay returned to winning ways.
Bondar, ranked 77, had got off to a flying start with a double-break for 4-0.
The Hungarian served for the set at 5-2, but was unable to close in that game, and Boisson took full advantage.
The Frenchwoman wrapped up her first-set comeback with another break, winning the last five games in a row.
At the start of the second set, Bondar, who won the final on this same court last year when the tournament was not yet a WTA 250 event, broke serve.
But Boisson erased the break with a dropshot winner to earn a love break and pull back on serve at 3-3.
She dug deep to break for 5-3, staving off a break point in the last game and grabbed her first WTA title.

Ahly vs Zamalek in Egyptian League Cairo derby set for 29 September - Egyptian Football

The Egyptian Pro League (EPL) announced late on Sunday that the Cairo derby between Ahly and Zamalek, scheduled for the 9th matchday of the 2025–2026 Egyptian Premier League season, will take place on 29 September at Cairo International Stadium. The EPL draw, held on Sunday, also revealed the season's opening fixtures. Defending champions Ahly will begin their campaign against Modern Sport, while their fierce rivals Zamalek will face Ceramica Cleopatra. The 2025–2026 season kicks off on 8 August and will feature 21 teams competing in a two-phase format. According to the EPL statement, Ahly will meet runners-up Pyramids FC on the 5th matchday, scheduled for 30 August. In the first phase, each team will play 20 matches in a single round-robin format. The top seven teams will then advance to a title-deciding championship group, while the remaining 14 clubs will battle to avoid relegation in a separate group. Zamalek will face Pyramids FC on 1 March 2026, at the Air Defence Stadium. At the conclusion of the second phase, four teams from the lower group will be relegated. Final rankings in both groups will take into account the points accumulated in the first phase as well as results from direct encounters within each group. Bayern agree deal to sign Liverpool winger Diaz: reports - World

German champions Bayern Munich have agreed to sign Liverpool winger Luis Diaz in a £65.5 million ($88 million) deal, according to multiple reports on Sunday. Bayern had an initial offer of £59 million rejected by the Premier League champions last week, but their improved bid looks set to bring the Colombia international to the Allianz Arena. Diaz has reportedly been given permission to leave Liverpool's pre-season tour of Asia in order to complete a medical with Bayern. He joined Liverpool from Porto in January 2022 and won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup during his time at Anfield. The 28-year--old made 50 appearances and scored 17 goals in all competitions last season as Arne Slot's team clinched the English title for the first time in five years. Diaz was left out of Liverpool's 4-2 friendly defeat against AC Milan in Hong Kong on Saturday as speculation mounted over his future. "In Lucho's (Diaz's) situation, there's a lot of rumours around him lately and I cannot go into that," Slot said after the Milan match. "He's training really well with us but we have decided for now not to play him yet. "I'm used to talking to most of my players on a regular basis. I cannot comment much more about that." Diaz's impending signing gives Bayern a quality replacement for Germany forward Jamal Musiala, who has been ruled out for a "long period" after he suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle at the Club World Cup this month. Liverpool have been busy in the transfer window, bolstering their attacking options with expensive swoops for Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz and Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike. Defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez arrived from Leverkusen and Bournemouth respectively, while goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili joined from Valencia. The Reds are also believed to be interested in making a bid for Newcastle's £150 million-rated striker Alexander Isak. Formula One: Piastri wins Belgian GP, extends championship lead - Omni sports

Oscar Piastri held off his McLaren teammate Lando Norris to win the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc came third as Piastri stretched his lead in the drivers' standings over Norris to 16 points. Heavy rain delayed the 13th round of the season by 80 minutes, with organisers eventually allowing a rolling start after four laps behind the safety car as the sun finally appeared. Pole sitter Norris was quickly passed by Piastri as Norris complained he had a problem with his car's battery. Piastri then produced a controlled race from the front to lead home McLaren's sixth 1-2 of the season. "I knew lap one was going to be my best chance of winning the race," said Piastri. "Rest of race we managed really well," the Australian added. "Oscar did a good job, nothing more to say," said Norris. Max Verstappen, winner of Saturday's sprint, took fourth in Laurent Mekies' first race weekend as Red Bull team principal after the sacking of Christian Horner a fortnight ago.
