The WTA 250 SP Open, scheduled for the week of Sept. 8, replaces Tunisia's Jasmin Open in Monastir and will feature a 32-player singles draw and 16-team doubles competition on outdoor hard courts.
Women's tennis fans in Brazil's largest city have waited since 2000 for the tour's return, when Hungary's Rita Kuti-Kis claimed the singles crown at the Brasil Open while Argentina's Laura Montalvo and Paola Suarez captured the doubles title.
The South American addition comes during a vibrant 2025 season that has already produced 15 different singles champions across WTA 250, 500 and 1000 events, highlighted by Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva becoming the youngest-ever WTA 1000 tournament winner.
This competitive drama, coupled with the WTA's recent brand refresh, has sparked significant audience growth, with social media followers increasing 25% year-on-year through March and video views surging 163% in the first quarter, the WTA said. REUTERS

"With this deal, RC Espanyol and (Burnley) will be part of this investment group, which expands its interests by having a club in LaLiga and another in the Premier League - although each will remain independent," Espanyol said in a statement. China's RASTAR Group took over Espanyol in 2015, overseeing two relegations and promotions as well as a seventh-placed finish in the 2018-19 season. "RASTAR is not disassociating itself from RCD Espanyol, but rather its shares will become part of this new investment vehicle that will have stakes in both clubs," Espanyol added. Find out what's new on ST website and app. LOS ANGELES - Flag football will take center stage during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, after organizers confirmed the sport's medal matches will be held in primetime slots in its first-ever Olympic appearance. The International Federation of American Football (IFAF), in partnership with the National Football League (NFL), announced on Monday that the men's and women's medal games are scheduled for Friday evening, July 21, and Saturday afternoon, July 22, at BMO Stadium near downtown Los Angeles. The announcement comes as senior IFAF and NFL delegations visit Los Angeles for the first official meetings with Games organizers, marking exactly three years to the day before the LA28 Opening Ceremony. "Flag football will definitely be a hot ticket at the Games," IFAF President Pierre Trochet told Reuters on Monday. "We're going to be at a great stadium right in the heart of the city and we're going to have fantastic players on the field with NFL players available." Flag football is a non-contact variation of American football in which players wear flags attached to their waists. Instead of tackling, defensive players must remove a flag from the ball carrier to end a play. The sport is played on a smaller field with fewer players per side. Organizers hope to capture the excitement of "Friday Night Lights," a cherished American tradition, and generate iconic moments for the sport's Olympic launch.
