Law college rape survivor 'satisfied' with Kolkata Police probe, Calcutta HC told
According to Bar and Bench, a High Court bench of Justices Soumen Sen and Smita Das De was informed so by the gangrape survivor's lawyer during a hearing of a batch of petitions seeking an impartial probe in the case.
The 24-year-old law student was gang-raped on June 25, and the case recently sparked huge uproar. Her lawyer's submissions to the High Court came amid demands for a probe by a central agency.
A BJP fact-finding team recently raised suspicion on the Kolkata Police probe, alleging attempts being made to save the culprits.
The four-member team had also alleged that the names of the accused provided by the survivor in a written complaint were erased and replaced with letters J, G, S, M.
"When the police have tampered with the complaint itself, which is the basic document in the case, how can one hope that the victim and her family will get justice?" former Union minister and ex-Mumbai police chief Satya Pal Singh was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
The Kolkata Police's actions, like "tampering with the FIR and swift arrest of four accused", raise a big suspicion, he added.
Four arrests have been made in the case so far, with Monojit Mishra, a former student of the college, being identified as the prime accused, and two senior students – Promit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed.
Besides, security guard Pinaki Banerjee was also arrested after 'his replies were incoherent' during questioning.
The student had alleged that she was raped by Mishra in the security guard's room in the ground floor of the college between 7:30pm and 10:50pm on June 25.
During the hearing on Thursday, the Calcutta High Court ordered the Kolkata Police to file a fresh progress report in four weeks.

Law student's rape: Calcutta University drops Kolkata college as LLB exam centre over police presence
Calcutta University has decided not to hold its LLB fourth, sixth, and eighth semester examinations at the law college in Kolkata where a former contractual staffer allegedly raped a student on June 25, an official said on Sunday. The examinations will be held from August 11 to August 26 at the university's other centres. 'The shadow of the horrific incident is still in the minds of all, and there are barricades in front of the campus since the investigation is going on. The police are present on the campus, guarding the student union room and the guard room where the alleged crime took place. So the college will not be an exam centre,' said the university official, adding that the second semester examinations could also not be held at the college because of heavy police deployment in the wake of the alleged rape. In the Calcutta High Court, counsel representing the college had requested the bench of Justices Soumen Sen and Samira Das De to provide a temporary police post on the campus until the college could hire new security staff. According to sources, a member of the college's governing body had requested the university not to consider the college as an examination centre until the police deployment was withdrawn. Monojit Mishra, 31, a former contractual staffer at the college, and security guard Pinaki Banerjee, 55, and second-year students Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukherjee, 20, are the accused in the case. Mishra was also a functionary of the ruling Trinamool Congress's student wing. On Friday, the university removed two of its nominees from the college governing body. Interim Vice-Chancellor Santa Datta De said in a statement that Sibranjan Chatterjee and Yashwanti Sremanee had been removed for 'the irregular appointment of Monojit Mishra and not opposing the appointment and other irregular activities of the governing body'. Also on Friday, the police sought police custody of all four men accused in the case for further investigation, but the Alipore court sent them back to judicial custody till August 5. Police sources said there had been some discrepancies in the statements of the accused and their gait analysis (comparison of a person's walking pattern to that captured in CCTV footage) report. The police's detective department has taken over the rape case from the Special Investigation Team (SIT). The SIT, which initially had five members and was later expanded to add four more, will now assist the department in the inquiry.

An Indian entrepreneur has revealed what he did after his passport and cash were stolen in Spain. Ayush Panchmiya said the theft occurred on a Saturday, and he couldn't approach the Indian Embassy for help as it was closed over the weekend. In posts shared on X and LinkedIn, he recalled the shock he felt when he realised that all his belongings had been stolen in a foreign country. The co-founder of Blockwee, a startup that provides specialized marketing services to Web3 brands, said that he and his team members had landed in Barcelona after a 'heavy week' at a crypto conference in Cannes, France. They were working at a Starbucks outlet, editing content for some clients, when Panchmiya stepped outside to take a call. He left his bag under the table, thinking nothing of it. It was 'something I'd done a hundred times on trips like these,' said the Mumbai-based entrepreneur. Unfortunately for Panchmiya, leaving his bag under the table proved to be a mistake. When he came back, he realised it had been stolen. Red tape in Barcelona In his X post, Panchmiya revealed that his bag contained his credit cards, a good chunk of his cash and his passport with his US visa. 'Panic hit me. I'd heard all the travel warnings: Be extra careful in Spain, especially Barcelona. But hearing isn't the same as experiencing,' he said. Panchmiya immediately approached the staff at Starbucks, requesting them to let him review the CCTV footage. The staff, however, refused, claiming that police had to get involved to review the CCTV footage. The Indian entrepreneur then approached the nearest police station and relayed his predicament. 'And then came the real shock,' he said, revealing that police told him it would take 15 to 20 days to review the CCTV footage. Time was a luxury that Panchmiya did not have. The theft occurred on a Saturday, and he was due to fly back to India on Monday. Indian embassy steps in 'The Indian embassy was shut. So I waited, helpless, until Monday morning. Walked in as soon as they opened,' he recalled. The embassy proved extremely helpful and issued an emergency certificate in just four to five hours. An emergency certificate works like a temporary passport – and Panchmiya was able to board his flight back to India that same evening. 'Now I'm in the middle of applying for a new passport, redoing my visas from scratch, and dealing with everything that comes after such a loss,' he said. The entrepreneur said he was sharing his experience not to rant but to help people understand their options if they find themselves in a similar situation. 'If you travel often, especially around Europe, this can happen to anyone,' he said. 'Ask for an emergency certificate. If your flight is close, they can issue one in hours.'
