Have asked for hassle-free refunds to tourists: Tourism Min Shekhawat

The central government is offering its unstinted support to tourists in Jammu and Kashmir who wish to return home following the terror attack in Pahalgam, Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Shekhawat said on Wednesday.
In a post on X, Shekhawat wrote, "In light of yesterday's tragic incident in Kashmir, many tourists are understandably anxious and reconsidering their travel plans. I've spoken to the concerned authorities and urged airlines, hotels, and tour operators to allow full refunds without hassle."

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also acknowledged the concerns of tourists. In a post on X, he said, "Although it is heartbreaking to see the exodus of our guests from the valley after yesterday's tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, at the same time we totally understand why people would want to leave."

Security beefed up in Kashmir
Authorities in Srinagar have established a control room at the airport to assist passengers and ensure smooth departures. This initiative is part of broader security efforts following the recent terror attack that has left at least 26 people dead.
The Union Territory administration is collaborating with airlines to facilitate the return of the victims' mortal remains and provide support to grieving families travelling across India.
The attack, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon near the Baisaran meadow close to Pahalgam town, resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, most of them tourists. This also stands as the deadliest assault in the Kashmir Valley since the 2019 Pulwama bombing.
In the wake of the attack, travel agencies in Delhi reported that nearly 90 per cent of bookings for Jammu and Kashmir have been cancelled by tourists over security concerns. Popular destinations, including Gulmarg, Hajan Valley, and the Tulip Gardens, had seen a significant number of visitors before the incident.
Refunds, rescheduling for tourists
In response to the crisis, several airlines and travel platforms have introduced measures to assist affected passengers. Air India, IndiGo, and EaseMyTrip are offering complimentary rescheduling and full refunds for bookings made before April 22, applicable for travel until April 30.
To further support travellers, Air India and IndiGo have arranged special flights from Srinagar to Delhi and Mumbai. These airlines have also waived cancellation and rescheduling fees for affected routes, offering flexibility during this challenging time.
EaseMyTrip has similarly extended waivers and is working closely with airlines and local authorities to ensure seamless communication and updates. The company's founder, Nishant Pitti, assured customers of their commitment to reducing inconvenience.

Four people were killed and at least 130, who were initially feared trapped, have been rescued in the village that is a key stopover on the route to Gangotri, the origin of the Ganges, and also houses many hotels, restaurants and homestays. Before-after images of the village show the scale of devastation. Contiguous buildings, including three and four-storey houses, fell like a pack of cards as the surging waters washed over them. The devastating flashflood came in the wake of a cloudburst somewhere in the catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river. The raging waters flowed down two different sides of the same hill, one towards Dharali and the other towards the village of Sukki, he said. Landslides have blocked 163 roads, including five national highways, seven state highways and two border roads across the state, further impeding rescue and preventing personnel from getting to the far-flung area, about 140 km from the state capital Dehradun and usually a five-hour drive. Uttarakhand principal secretary RK Sudhanshu said 40 to 50 buildings have been damaged. Local residents said a large portion of the Dharali market was washed away. Rajesh Panwar, an eyewitness to the horror of nature's relentless fury, told PTI that about 20 to 25 hotels and homestays may have been washed away. There was widespread panic in the neighbouring villages following the flashflood. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said no stone is being left unturned in providing assistance to the people. 'I express my condolences to the people affected by this tragedy in Dharali, Uttarkashi. Along with this, I pray for the well-being of all the victims. I have spoken to Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami ji and obtained information about the situation. Need direct flights from Chandigarh for economic benefits to Punjab, Haryana, Himachal: AAP MP
1 2 Chandigarh: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Malvinder Singh Kang on Monday met Union civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu to advocate for the start of direct international flights from Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in Mohali (Chandigarh). During the meeting, Kang submitted a detailed memorandum urging the minister to address the old demand. He requested direct flights from Chandigarh to major global destinations, including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and countries in Europe. He also called for a direct domestic flight to Sri Hazur Sahib, Nanded, an important Sikh pilgrimage site in Maharashtra. Kang highlighted the strategic importance of the airport. "This airport, named after martyr Shaheed Bhagat Singh, has all the necessary infrastructure and is strategically located to serve as an international aviation hub for North India," he said. The MP emphasised that improved air connectivity would bring significant economic benefits to Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh by attracting international investors and boosting tourism. He also noted that direct flights would greatly benefit the large Punjabi diaspora, strengthening socio-economic and cultural connections. Addressing the growing congestion at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, Kang suggested that direct flights from Chandigarh would alleviate pressure and provide a more convenient travel option for the northern region. This move, he argued, aligns with the govt's UDAN scheme and its vision for equitable regional development, while also reducing carbon emissions from road travel to Delhi.
