Drunk Driver Causes Chaos at Outdoor Art Show
At around 3 a.m. local time on Sunday morning, 23-year-old Nicoly Ribeiro De Souza allegedly drove her 2020 Nissan Rogue into an outdoor art exhibit in Montauk. Pictures taken later on Sunday morning show the stark devastation, with artists' tents collapsed on top of paintings large and small. Jim Levinson, a local Sag Harbor photographer, noted that it 'looked like a tornado came through.'
One of the damaged tents reportedly contained the work of around 30 different artists, with one of them losing paintings on which she'd worked for most of last year. Volunteers helped to clean up the site so that the exhibit could still take place as scheduled on Sunday morning. Luckily, none of the vendors were hurt in the episode. However, for some, the loss of their work is just as dire.'The people that come to these shows, this is how they make their living,' said John Papaleo, a board member of the Montauk Artists Association, which sponsors the event. 'This is their livelihood.'
De Souza is currently awaiting arraignment. Following the accident, she was taken to Southampton Hospital with minor injuries. A passenger in De Souza's vehicle declined medical treatment at the scene. NY man arrested for allowing 15-year-old to drive car involved in deadly NJ crash
A New York man has been arrested for allegedly allowing a 15-year-old to get behind the wheel of a car that was later involved in a crash in New Jersey, which left another teenager dead. The fatal collision occurred early in the morning of Feb. 28 on the Palisades Interstate Parkway, near the New York state line in Alpine, according to a statement from Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella. Authorities were called to the scene just before 6 a.m. to investigate reports of a crash between a 2025 Nissan Rogue carrying five occupants and a 2019 Honda CR-V, carrying only the driver, who was unharmed. One of the passengers in the Rogue, a 16-year-old from New York who was not identified, suffered serious injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene, the prosecutor's office said. Two of the other passengers were also seriously hurt while the teen driver sustained minor injuries. He was arrested back in March on a slew of charges, including vehicular homicide and operating a motor vehicle without a license during a fatal accident. Authorities said the teen was traveling at a high rate of speed and driving recklessly in the lead up to the crash. Ryan Chambers, 21 of Elmira, N.Y., was the lone adult in the packed Rogue at the time. He was arrested in Elmira Heights earlier this month and has since been charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Chambers was transported back to Bergen County, where he remains in custody at the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing.

Alleged drunk driver crashes into Long Island art show, causes thousands of dollars worth of damage
Drone video shows the damage caused by an alleged drunk driver crashing into a pop-up art show on Long Island. Some artists say they lost tens of thousands of dollars' worth of merchandise. Security guards narrowly miss getting struck by driver Police officials say around 3 a.m. Sunday, a 23-year-old woman, believed to be driving under the influence, plowed her SUV through the popular Montauk Plaza, where dozens of artists had tents set up for their annual Art Show on the Green. John Papaleo, Montauk Artists Association treasurer and organizer of the event, said she almost crashed into two security guards. "[One guard] grabbed the other one, pulled her out of the way. The chair that she was sitting on wound up underneath the vehicle," he said. An alleged drunk driver crashed through six tents at the annual Montauk Art Show on the Green on June 29, 2025. Evan Reinheimer Organizers say the driver barreled through at least six tents, destroying nearly everything. "It looked like a tornado had ripped through here," Papaleo said. Police say the driver was transported to a nearby hospital for minor injuries. She was charged with DWI and six counts of reckless criminal mischief. Artists lose tens of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise One of the damaged tents belonged to Jacqueline Clint, owner of Jacqueline Rene Jewelry. "It's a significant loss for me," she said. Clint estimates she lost almost $84,000 worth of jewelry. She says it's not just items that have gone to waste, but all the time she spent creating each one by hand. "The tent, the tables, the displays, all of that is so easy to replace, but I put so much love and care into every single piece of jewelry that I made," she said. Photographer Jim Levison estimates an alleged drunk driver caused about $30,000 in damage when she crashed into his tent at the annual Montauk Art Show on the Green on June 29, 2025. Jim Levison Jim Levison, a retired New York City Police officer turned professional landscape photographer, says his damage is tallying up to more than $30,000. He says most of his work is displayed in expensive frames or printed on metal. "It was disappointing. A little bit like the wind gets knocked out of you," he said. He even had to cancel his upcoming Fourth of July show. "The show season just started. This was only my third show," Levison said. While he says it's a major setback, he's determined to recover. The Montauk Artists Association is also remaining resilient, saying it still plans on putting on its second part of the art show scheduled for the end of August.
