KUALA LUMPUR: Policies that are more focused and responsive need to be formulated to strengthen national food security, in light of concerns over rising food prices and the country's high dependence on global supply chains.
Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) through the Agro-Food Productivity Nexus (AFPN) said currently, Malaysia still relied heavily on food imports, including in the poultry farming industry.
"For example, the Self-Sufficiency Level (SSL) for chicken dropped to 90.2 per cent in 2023 compared to 100.2 per cent in 2021, indicating growing reliance on external sources.
"Although chickens are farmed locally, the import dependency for animal feed remains high, making the sector vulnerable to global shocks and exchange rate fluctuations,' AFPN said in a statement issued by MPC on Tuesday (July 1).
AFPN also said that although Malaysia recorded an improvement in the World Competitiveness Ranking (WCR) 2025, the agro-food sector's performance indicators, such as price competitiveness, productivity and innovation, remain slow and lacklustre.
AFPN stressed the need for proactive and contextual policy reforms. These include facilitating the entry of new farmers, supporting the expansion of existing farmers through easier land access, restructuring approval processes, reducing bureaucratic red tape and accelerating digital technology adoption in the agro-food sector.
MPC director-general Datuk Zahid Ismail was quoted in the statement as saying that Malaysia must remove systemic barriers, open up space for innovation and create an ecosystem that enables farmers to grow and contribute meaningfully to national productivity.
"Food security is not just about supply; it is closely tied to resilience and long-term competitiveness. Digital adoption is a key driver of agro-food productivity, but connectivity must be prioritised first,' he said.
On June 17, the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) announced that Malaysia has risen 11 places in the WCR 2025, moving to 23rd place out of 69 economies, its best ranking since 2020.- Bernama

Boosting maritime connectivity with satellites

Fast track: Fahmi (centre) checking the Internet speed on his mobile phone alongside Mohamad Fauzi (second from left) and Zairil (second from right) in front of the six-way 4G multi-operator core network in Tanjung Asam, Bayan Lepas. — LIM BENG TATT/The Star GEORGE TOWN: Malaysia is planning to use Low Earth Orbit (LOE) satellites to enhance connectivity in an effort to drive the nation's progress, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. The Communications Minister said the initiative, which could potentially start in the third or fourth quarter of this year, was especially vital to boosting connectivity in the maritime and difficult terrain areas. 'This solution is relevant because constructing a 60m tower isn't always feasible, for instance, on remote islands where the terrain and logistics aren't suitable. 'Therefore, we believe the Direct-to-Cell technology could be a viable alternative, and it is part of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC) future plans to help address connectivity challenges,' he said during a press conference after 'Di Mana Ada Jalan, Di Situ Ada Internet' programme at Tanjung Asam here yesterday. Fahmi said the technology would leverage satellites into functioning like transmission towers from space. However, he said the initiative would have to wait for system readiness. Earlier, Fahmi launched the YTL Communications' Tanjung Asam six-way multi-operator core network (MOCN) base station here. The MOCN in Tanjung Asam, which is the fifth in the country, is a milestone project that supports the ministry's vision in building a network infrastructure sharing framework (NISF). Other MOCN facilities in the country are Ikon Tengkolok in Bukit Putus and Kem Pengakap Bukit Putus in Negri Sembilan; Prima Gambang in Pahang; and the West Coast Expressway at Kota Seri Langat Toll Plaza in Banting, Selangor. The NISF effort enables all network operators to improve mobile Internet coverage for the people. The MOCN in Tanjung Asam can provide services to more than 500 residents and 350 daily commuters, including nearby fishing villages and underserved communities, with seamless connectivity to boost the local economic development. Also present during the launch were Penang infrastructure committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari and Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa. Zairil said the state government expressed its gratitude to Putrajaya for the 'Di Mana Ada Jalan, Di Situ Ada Internet' initiative which has brought significant benefits to the local community. 'We still recall the tragic incident that occurred a few years ago at Tanjung Asam beach, where a drowning victim could not be reached in time due to poor network coverage. 'With the development of telecommunications infrastructure and installation of towers, such issues can now be addressed,' said Zairil. He said the initiative would also resolve connectivity 'black spots' along Penang's main trunk roads. The state government, he added, is especially hopeful that similar problematic areas both on the island and the mainland could be tackled through the efforts of the MCMC and the cooperation of all six major telco providers. Meanwhile, Fahmi said the MCMC was also working closely with the Malaysian Highway Authority to have telecommunication coverage on its highways. 'Discussions are ongoing to include some key locations in phase two of the coverage plan. 'Many of these sites will likely require new towers, and we will support such efforts,' he said. He added that the MCMC had also identified about 50km of roads that did not have coverage.

Building rapport with Tanjong community over feast of durians

Hui Ying (third right) sharing a light moment with attendees at the durian event at Lee Sih Chong Soo Hall in Burma Road. — KT GOH/The Star THE aroma of durian filled the air during a festival at Lee Sih Chong Soo Hall along Burma Road in George Town to celebrate the spirit of community. The event, organised by Tanjong MP and Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying, saw about 500kg of the King of Fruits served to some 300 guests. These comprised community group members and media personnel who had contributed time and effort to help the public. Hui Ying thanked the many hands behind community- building in her constituency. 'We gather not only to enjoy the King of Fruits, but more importantly, to appreciate our comrades who have always served with dedication for the well-being of our community. 'I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all, including members of the Village Community Management Councils, Women and Family Development Committee, Youth Committee, and Parliament and service centre members, as well as officials from various departments, and agencies, including the media,' she said in her speech. Attendees were treated to a feast of premium durian varieties such as Udang Merah, Hor Lor, Kulit Hijau, and Naga Emas. Other local favourite fruits like rambutans and mangosteens were also served. Hui Ying also highlighted the Madani government reforms and achievements in national finance. 'Since taking office, the Madani government has implemented a range of bold reforms including subsidy rationalisation, expansion of SST and restructuring of national expenditure. 'These reforms have begun to bear fruit, with the fiscal deficit reduced by 17%, increased tax revenues, and Malaysia climbing to 23rd place in the World Competitiveness Ranking 2025. 'Among the reforms with the most direct impact on the people is the increase in allocation for cash assistance. 'This year, the government raised the allocation for Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) to RM13bil, up from RM10bil last year, making it the largest cash assistance in the country's history. 'Through Sara, recipients can spend the aid directly using their MyKad at over 3,700 registered shops nationwide, including more than 190 in Penang. 'The amount of assistance also increased to RM1,200 per year, and up to RM2,100 for certain households,' she said. Also present were DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang, several state assemblymen and community leaders.
