Suspect in Likhona Fose murder was previously convicted for attempted murder
The smiling Mduduzi Trevor Mnisi, 39, appeared in court on a charge of premeditated murder.
His previous conviction was disclosed by his Legal Aid lawyer Asanda Qwabe, who said the case was from 2007.
Mnisi was taken in for questioning on Monday before being arrested. Despite this week's cold spell, his lawyer said he had not been allocated a bed nor a blanket when he was taken to the Krugersdorp prison.
His case was remanded to June 18 for a bail application and further investigations.
Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said the state needed time to gather evidence.
'He is charged with premeditated murder, which falls under the offences within the ambit of schedule six. As the NPA we will oppose his release on bail,' she said.
The state did not yet have adequate information about Mnisi. 'Investigations are ongoing. As the NPA we are not in a position to divulge at this stage whether he had previous or pending cases, and neither can we confirm at this stage that he was released on parole,' she added.
Fose, a grade 8 pupil at Ikusasalethu Secondary School in Braamfischerville, Joburg, was found deceased on June 1.

IFP leader Velenkosini Hlabisa said the party remains a vocal participant within the GNU, holding the government to its promise of transparency and swift justice. The party president said this during an IFP media briefing on Monday afternoon. The party reflected on matters pertaining to South Africa's governance, the GNU and the government of provincial unity (GPU). IFP reaffirmed its GNU role 'The IFP is in the GNU or GPU in order to govern or be part of governance. But this does not dilute the image of the IFP,' Hlabisa said. Hlabisa reiterated the IFP's commitment to the GNU and GPUs, saying that they embody a vision of healing the wounds of the past while working towards a brighter and inclusive South Africa. Speaking of crime, the party addressed allegations of political interference made by KwaZulu-Natal's police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The IFP said President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision to place Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave and to establish a judicial commission of inquiry aligns with the party's recommendation to the president. Party calls for full-scale investigation Hlabisa said this demonstrates the party's influence in the GNU, adding that problems within the South African Police Service (Saps) lie at the core of political violence and the failure to resolve political murder cases. The IFP also called for a full-scale investigation into political interference and disruptions that have hindered the progress of political killing investigations. The IFP also took aim at the NPA, saying it needs to do more and better, refocusing itself on speedy prosecutions, especially on the findings of the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into state capture. IFP supports National Dialogue As a result, the IPF supports the upcoming National Dialogue, recognising that genuine nationhood can only be achieved when leaders listen to the cries of the people and work together. Guilty or not guilty? Malema will know his fate in gun case on this date
The East London Regional Court has postponed the public firearm discharge case against the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, to 29 September 2025 for judgement. On Monday, 21 July, both the state and the defence submitted their closing arguments on the merits of the case. As previously reported, and his security official, Adriaan Snyman are charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, discharge of a firearm in a built-up area, failure to take reasonable precaution to person or property, and reckless endangerment to person or property. The charges emanate from the party's 5th anniversary celebrations in Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape where Malema could be seen dancing and singing on the stage. Thereafter, he allegedly is seen firing the rifle into the air before he hands it over to Snyman. Malema and Snyman have pleaded not guilty to all charges. In 2024, the prosecution closed its case, having led the evidence of 19 witnesses. On the other hand, the defence led the evidence of two expert witnesses, in firearms control and forensic ballistics, for Snyman. Malema took the stand in his defence. All the witnesses were cross-examined by Advocate Joel Cesar, for the state. NPA spokesperson in the Eastern Cape, Luxolo Tyali, said that based on the evidence and arguments meticulously presented by the prosecution, he believes that the NPA has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and hopes that the magistrate will convict the accused.
