Demand for renaming Dakshina Kannada as Mangaluru district gains momentum

The Hindu6 hours ago
A collective demand to rename Dakshina Kannada district as Mangaluru district was made on Tuesday, a few days after the State Cabinet approved renaming Ramanagar district as Bengaluru South and Bagepalli taluk in Chikkaballapura district as Bhagya Nagar.
Dakshina Kannada District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting, presided over by Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MP, on Tuesday, resolved to urge the State government to rename Dakshina Kannada as Mangaluru district.
Raising the matter in the meeting, Harish Poonja, Belthangady MLA, said that the people of Dakshina Kannada always introduced themselves as ones belonging to Mangaluru, and others even recognised them as such. There is a demand from the people to rename the district as Mangaluru.
MLAs Y. Bharat Shetty, D. Vedavyasa Kamath, Umanath Kotian, Bhagirathi Murlya, and MLC Prathapsimha Nayak, along with other elected representatives and nominated members of the committee, concurred with the demand raised by Mr. Poonja.
Capt. Chowta told the meeting that the resolution of the committee would be sent to the government.
Samithi pitches in
Earlier, Mangaluru Zilla Tulupara Horata Samithi demanded that the district be named Mangaluru. Speaking to press persons on behalf of the Samithi, a former president of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, Dayanand Kattalsar, said that the Portuguese and British named the region as 'Canara' and later called it 'South Canara' which later became Dakshina Kannada and it does not gel well with native culture and ethos.
Mr. Kattalsar said there were historical references to the region as Mangaluru. There were some old 'Paddanas' (sung narratives) referring to the region as 'Mangara'.
Like-minded people formed Mangaluru Zilla Tulupara Horata Samiti to take forward the demand, he said.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary Rakshith Shivaram said the airport and seaport were named after Mangaluru. The buns (a snack) of the coastal region were popular as Mangaluru buns, while the tiles manufactured in the coastal belt were known as Mangaluru tiles.
Former Mangaluru City North MLA B.A. Mohiuddin Bava stated that the Samithi had taken up the matter of renaming Dakshina Kannada after the State government recently approved the renaming of Ramanagar district and Bagepalli taluk.
Former Mangaluru City Corporation councillor Kiran Kodical and former president of the Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners Association, Dilraj Alva, also demanded the renaming of the district.
In a statement issued on July 5 in support of the demand, Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyasa Kamath said that renaming the district as Mangaluru would give fresh impetus to the ongoing fight for primacy for Tulu.
A legal fight would be taken up to rename the district after its local name, just as many places in the country have done. The State government should favourably respond to the demand, the MLA said.

District administration to propose renaming Dakshina Kannada as Mangaluru

Meanwhile, Dayanand Kathalsar of Mangaluru District Tulu Movement Committee and former chairman of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy at a press briefing demanded the government to rename DK as Mangaluru district. He said that even in the Sangam literature, there is a mention of 'Tulunadu' and during Vijayanagara empire, Tulunadu was divided into 'Mangaluru Rajya' and 'Barkur Rajya'. "Though we are freed from the rule of the Portuguese and the British, names like 'South Canara' or the Dakshina Kannada given during their period are still used, which need to be changed," he said. KPCC general secretary Rakshit Shivaram said that when SM Krishna was the chief minister, he came up with the Brand Bengaluru concept similarly it is a time for 'Brand Mangaluru'. "We will soon meet the chief minister, DCM, the home minister and the district incharge minister and all the elected representatives and submit a memorandum. The present name is 'Dakshina Kannada' but we are not in the southern part of the state, instead we are in the Western part of the state. The highways, airport, port and the railway stations here are named after Mangaluru hence the district should also get the same name," he said.

Rebuilt British-Era Bridge In Mumbai Named After Operation Sindoor

Mumbai: The reconstructed Carnac Road Over Bridge (ROB) in South Mumbai has been renamed as "Sindoor Bridge", a nomenclature inspired by India's military action in May against Pakistan to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack, civic officials said on Tuesday. The British-era bridge will be inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday morning, they said. The east-west connector, earlier known as the Carnac Bridge and named after former Bombay Province governor James Rivett Carnac, who held the office from 1839 to 1841, has been rechristened as 'Sindoor Bridge' (after Operation Sindoor). A senior Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official told PTI that Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar had written to the civic body recommending the renaming of the ROB as 'Sindoor Bridge' in honour of the May 7-10 military operation against Pakistan's terror sites and air bases. In a release issued on late Tuesday evening, the BMC said Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, Narwekar, and other senior leaders and civic officials will be present at the inauguration ceremony. The bridge, which connects eastern and western parts of the Central Railway's train tracks (between Mumbai CSMT and Masjid stations) and links to P D'Mello Road, will help ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity in South Mumbai. The Sindoor Bridge was rebuilt by the BMC after the original 150-year-old structure was declared unsafe by the Central Railway (CR) and dismantled in August 2022. According to the BMC, the new structure, constructed as per a design approved by CR, spans a total length of 328 metres, including a 70-metre stretch within Railway limits, and 230 metres of approach roads on either side. It features two steel girders, each 70 metres long, 26.5 metres wide, and 10.8 metres high, weighing 550 metric tonnes, mounted on reinforced concrete piers. Work on the eastern approach, including piling, civil works, and asphalting, was completed in just four months, as per the civic body. The installation of massive girders above the Railway tracks, considered a complex civil and structural engineering feat, was carried out in October 2024 and January 2025, the release said. The reconstructed bridge has successfully undergone load testing, and the BMC has secured all necessary clearances, including structural stability certification, safety clearance, and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Railway authorities, it said. The civic body said the bridge is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion at key intersections such as Walchand Hirachand Marg and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road, and improve east-west traffic flow across important routes, including Yusuf Meherally Road, Mohammad Ali Road, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Road.
