UK seaside town boasts Victorian charm and £66 hotels but there's a catch

Daily Mirror2 days ago

If you like architecture and shopping, this UK seaside town just seven miles from Blackpool could be for you. But a recent survey has plunged it into an unfavourable light
A family friendly seaside town in northern England has been named among the worst in the country, but a huge regeneration plan hopes to put it back on the map.
Despite its picturesque views in Lancashire, and its Art Deco theatre, Fleetwood was ranked 15th out of 20 in a new UK seaside town ranking by consumer experts at Which? Making up its less than impressive score, it was rated just two stars for its beaches, and just one star for its food scene and tourist attractions.

TripAdvisor reviews do offer a mixed bag of reviews, with one labelling the promenade "tidy and well presented". But another summed up their experience which echoes more of Which?'s ratings. It said: "Apart from a couple of cafes, there is literally nothing to do. We had a nice walk that was very peaceful. Just amazed at how there really is nothing there."

There's no escaping the fact that Fleetwood has had a fluctuating reputation over the years - but a comeback could be on the horizon. A £16 million masterplan is set to transform the town in the coming years, but before its proposed tourism boom, staycationers can lap up hotel prices of just £66, which is among the cheapest in the list compiled by Which?
What does Fleetwood actually have to offer?
Fleetwood is relatively small, with just over 25,000 residents as previously reported by The Express. The town enjoyed a massive expansion in the early 20th century thanks to a growing fishing industry and the arrival of passenger ferries.
One of the key highlights of the resort town is, despite their brutal ranking, the beaches. Rossall Beach is ideal for those looking for seclusion. However, if you're in the mood for outdoor activities, Marine Beach has a livelier atmosphere, with shops and restaurants nearby.
Despite its seaside proximity, Fleetwood is regularly overshadowed by its famous neighbour: Blackpool. Blackpool continues to be named one of the best budget-friendly seaside resorts in the UK - drawing hundreds of thousands of tourists over the years.
But one of the things that sets Fleetwood apart is its art deco buildings - the most prominent being Marine Hall which sits on the town's seafront. The Hall is one of the best entertainment venues in Wyre and retains the character of its 1930s art-deco heritage.

Marine Hall & Gardens hosts a year-round line-up of live music shows, comedy nights and family-friendly events. It has become a hub for the local community with a stunning ballroom and iconic glazed dome.
The Which? survey did, however, give high marks for shopping - best along the promenade - and 'peace and quiet'.

Arcadis' Fleetwood Waterfront Leisure Masterplan, which was submitted to the council in August 2024, reveals £16 million worth of transformation plans that start with the redevelopment of Marine Hall.
Blueprints show how the space could be transformed with a more 'prominent glazed entrance and foyer' from Marine Gardens, along with upgraded toilets with a new entrance, and vast improvements to the waterfront restaurant, including floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, Councillor Peter Le Marinel, Planning Policy and Economic Development Portfolio Holder, revealed the council's vision for Fleetwood to become a 'dynamic and lively place to live, work and visit' has been in the works for years.

He hailed the town's 'rich history' and 'striking coastline', drawing attention to 'remarkable' Heritage sites such as the Fleetwood Market and the art-deco Marine Hall theatre, which are in need of a major refurb.
"We are committed to enhancing the town's existing assets, attracting investment and funding to help Fleetwood achieve its full potential," Peter added. "We have appointed Arcadis, who also served as consultants for the original Masterplan, to develop business cases for four projects outlined in the Masterplan."]
Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel said: 'From beautiful coastlines to peaceful walks and charming traditional bucket and spade resorts, the UK seaside offers something for everyone - whatever the weather.
'While you may have your own favourite destination, as well as the top spots in Devon and Wales, our survey shows there are still plenty of beautiful hidden gems across the UK to explore. Some seaside resorts offer better value for money than others, so it is worth looking at surrounding areas of popular spots if you are looking for a cheaper overnight stay.'

Tourist leaves hilarious Snowdon review on Tripadvisor

More than 600,000 people travel to Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park every year for the chance to climb arguably the most famous mountain in Wales - Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). It gets so busy during the summer months, and during the holidays, there are queues to get to the summit. Yr Wyddfa - which is the tallest mountain in England and Wales at 1,085 metres (3,560 feet) - is a much-loved tourist attraction boasting a 4.8 (out of 5) rating on Tripadvisor from 2,803 reviews (at the time of writing). The largest national parks in the UK One person, describing their experience climbing Snowdon, said: "Just a beautiful place, challenging and yet peaceful. Amazing experience." While another added: "Absolutely amazing experience, amazing once in a lifetime views with awesome company!" The Llanberis Path up Yr Wydffa was also named the second most popular walk in the UK earlier in the year by AllTrails - the world's most popular and trusted platform for outdoor exploration. But not everyone seems to agree with the high praise for Snowdon. "Would be much better in Cornwall" - visitor requests Yr Wyddfa be relocated in hilarious review Just over 25 people, out of the 2,803 reviews on Tripadvisor, described their experience of Yr Wyddfa as "terrible", giving it a one out of five rating. One person described the climb as "rough and steep" before suggesting the mountain should be relocated. The review reads: "Its way too rough and steep. The weather is atrocious and whatever possessed them to put it in Wales? It would be much better in Cornwall." Another person, saying they were "lied to", was disappointed by the lack of a Welsh greeting upon reaching the summit. They said: "Awful experience. On reaching the peak there wasn't a leek or daffodil garden, nor a choir of Welsh miners. It was also raining and it wasn't warm." While a third person, describing the walk to the summit as "exhausting", suggested handrails should be added on Yr Wyddfa to help make the climb a little easier. The visitor commented: "The views at the top did not compensate for walk that is very difficult. I wished there were handrails. "A health person will struggle to get to the top. Athletes only walk."

Town with the best beaches in the UK named, and of course it's in Wales

If you want the perfect UK seaside holiday then we already know there's no place like home. Well now it's official. UK consumer champions Which? surveyed almost 4,000 people about their experiences of UK seaside destinations in the last year. They asked those taking part what their views were on a range of things including the quality of the beaches, scenery, food and drink offerings, accommodation, tourist attractions and value for money. In the end, two Welsh locations made it into the best five seaside finds, along with Bamburgh in Northumberland which took the top spot for the fifth year running. From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What's On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here. Portmeirion in Gwynedd, North Wales' colourful Italian inspired village celebrated for its vibrant architecture achieved a commendable 79% rating. In fourth place on the list was another Welsh gem that won over visitors. St Davids in Pembrokeshire, the UK's smallest city, it also matched Portmeirion's 79% destination score. You can read more about what Which had to say about Portmeirion and St Davids here. However, another Welsh town came out on top for the best beaches. In fact just just three towns got the full five stars for their beaches, and Tenby in Pembrokeshire is the stand out even among them. Almost everybody loved its four, family-friendly beaches, with the views of Goscar Rock rising up from beyond the north shore. Its charming Georgian lanes have a reputation for being overcrowded but, despite this, it even got a respectable three stars for peace and quiet. Many respondents said they visit out of season. Bamburgh and Tynemouth were the only other five star beach towns in the UK Rory Boland, Editor of Which? said: "From beautiful coastlines to peaceful walks and charming traditional bucket and spade resorts, the UK seaside offers something for everyone - whatever the weather. "While you may have your own favourite destination, as well as the top spots in Devon and Wales, our survey shows there are still plenty of beautiful hidden gems across the UK to explore.
