‘Inter-caste marriages will help wipe out caste system'
I am unable to call the murders done in the name of caste as either 'honour or dishonour killings'. They are brutal pre-meditated murders. Such acts attract Section 101 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS). Murder attracts the punishment of death or imprisonment for life and is also liable to be fined under Section 103 of the BNS. Yet, time and again, we find that stringent law and punishment are not deterrent enough. After every case of murder in the name of caste, like that of Kavin Selvaganesh, there is a hue and cry to enact a special law against 'honour killing'. There is, of course, logic to this call, as such legislation will be seen as the state's response to treat such violence with iron hands. But even a casual perusal of special laws that deal with atrocities committed against Scheduled Castes and Tribes or the prevalence of child marriage despite the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, prove that legislation and stringent punishment cannot eradicate such offences unless there is a change in the minds of the society. For instance, the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act was enacted to give speedy relief to women by disposing of cases within 60 days. Yet it is not uncommon to see cases under this Act pending for more than three years. To ensure that no more youth are abused, pressured, victimised by false cases, assaulted or murdered in the name of caste or honour, social reform is the need of the hour. The Supreme Court in the Lata Singh case in 2006 said, 'The caste system is a curse on the nation and the sooner it is destroyed the better. In fact, it is dividing the nation at a time when we have to be united to face the challenges before the nation unitedly. Hence, inter-caste marriages are, in fact, in the national interest as they will result in destroying the caste system.'

Survey of IIT-B seniors reveals many prefer the job market over further studies
Mumbai: Insight, the official student media body of the Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, conducted its annual 'Senior Survey' to understand the sentiments of the graduating batch. The survey revealed that many students had begun using ChatGPT and online platforms to learn new skills and enhance their portfolios before entering the job market. Of these, 183 said that they had used AI tools and online learning platforms to take additional courses beyond their coursework. This is the first year that AI related questions have featured in the survey. One of the chief editors of Insight, Shivam Agarwal, said, 'The use of ChatGPT and AI has increased immensely in the last year.' However, he added that the survey had no other purpose than to capture the thoughts of graduating students. As per the results of the survey, among the respondents, very few students are choosing to go for their higher studies. Only 35 students plan to pursue a master's degree or a PhD, and 5 plan to do a masters in business administration. The remaining students intend to start working immediately. From 278 students who responded to a question about the importance of attending classes, 128 said that attending classes was important if 'the professor and the course are interesting'. 16 students felt that they did not need to attend classes since there was enough material available online. Regarding how well IIT-B had prepared students for life after college, 151 students claimed that IIT-B has prepared them well, 'ready to rock', and 33 said that they feel exceptionally well prepared, 'master of the universe level'. In questions pertaining to their social lifestyles, 27% of respondents said that they had used dating apps for fun.

Dalit leaders demand high-level probe into death of Dalit student at Central University of Karnataka
Members of Dalit Sangharsh Samiti demanded a high-level probe into the alleged suicide of a Dalit student in Central University of Karnataka (CUK) –Kalaburagi on July 30, and expressed concern over the death of BSc 2nd year student from Odisha, who ended her life following alleged sexual harassment in the campus. DSS Sate Convener D.G. Sagar addressing presspersons in Kalaburagi city on Friday said that though the victim had complained to the Dean of Students Welfare, no action was taken against him. The CUK has recently been the subject of several controversies. Similarly another Dalit student has leveled allegations of sexual harassment against a canteen staff at university campus, though the student had complained about the issue to Student's Welfare Cell, the authorities have failed to take any action against the canteen staff. Mr. Sagar said that few months ago, a professor's brother who is running a milk parlour on the campus premises, allegedly misbehaved with students, the University Vice-Chancellor Battu Satyanarayana and Registrar R.R. Biradar and Dean of Students Welfare Basavaraj Kubakaddi tried to suppress the matter instead of taking stern action against him. The university was exhibiting an anti-Dalit approach through various forms of discrimination against Dalit students, which is directly impacting their academic and social well-being; though the State government wants to establish residential hostels for Dalit and minority students on campus, the university authorities have deliberately considered not providing land, Mr. Sagar claimed. Alleging irregularities in the recent appointments to the post of professor at CUK, Mr. Sagar said that Mr. Satyanarayana (vice-chancellor) favored candidates from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh depriving the eligible candidates from within Karnataka.
