Another Pietermaritzburg learner hailed a hero after saving boy from drowning

The Citizen14-06-2025

Another Pietermaritzburg school learner has saved a fellow learner from drowning — the second such incident reported in the city in recent weeks.
The Witness reports that in the latest case, a 13-year-old learner from Gateway Christian School in the city centre, acting on pure instinct and pushing aside his fear, dived into the deep end of a swimming pool to rescue an eight-year-old boy.
Award for bravery
Seluleko Dlamini, a Grade 7 learner, was presented with an award for his bravery and heroic actions last Thursday by the school, along with a cash prize.
The incident occurred during a school excursion to Mountain View Entertainment Centre in Bishopstowe, which coincidentally was also hosting another school at the time.
According to Seluleko, he had been swimming in the shallow end of the pool, as instructed by staff and teachers, before climbing out and heading to the tuck shop for a drink.
On his way, he noticed a boy struggling in the deep end.
'I just couldn't not help'
'I noticed a boy, maybe seven or eight years old, drowning in the deep end. I'm a good swimmer, but had anxiety that I would also drown if I helped him. I just couldn't not help. I counted to three and jumped in.'
He said the boy felt light as he carried him, which helped him push the child out of the pool.
Seluleko said he also hurt his leg, though he only realised this later.
He said all he could feel was a rush of adrenaline and panic until the boy was given the all-clear.
In that moment, Seluleko said: 'I felt like I did a good thing.'
'He helped on his own'
Mosiea, a Grade 7 teacher for isiZulu and creative arts, said teachers were alerted by learners screaming.
By the time they reached the pool, Seluleko had already helped the boy, who was crying and in shock.
'What amazes me is his instinct to help, because other learners screamed. Seluleko didn't try to report what was happening, he helped on his own.
'Without his intervention, the child may have drowned. It was scary. While we had learners from Grades 4 to 7, the other school seemed to have much younger grades,' she said, adding that a rope had been used to prevent learners from entering the deep end, but it appeared the child may have slipped in.
Gateway Christian School principal Leon du Casse said Seluleko's actions had turned a 'dangerous situation into a powerful testimony of hope and heroism'.
Similar incident in May
In May, The Witness reported on eight-year-old Lucia Els, from Ridge Junior Primary, who was hailed a hero after she saved her three-year-old cousin from drowning in a swimming pool during a family gathering.
The children had been playing on a trampoline at the bottom of the yard when Lucia's three-year-old epileptic cousin, Freya Bezuidenhout, wandered off and fell into the pool.
Lucia's mother, Liesl, said that from their position on the deck, the family was in no position to act quickly.
However, Lucia, who was with the other children closer to the pool, immediately recognised the danger and acted decisively.
She was awarded a certificate and a medal by the school for her efforts.

3 killed, 6 injured in Pietermaritzburg crashes

Three people were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a bridge on Payn Street in Pietermaritzburg in the early hours of Sunday, The Witness reports. KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service said it was not clear where the vehicle was coming from, but it was headed towards the bridge. Spokesperson Craig Botha said the three died on the scene while the driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries. 'At about 04:30 this morning our ambulance service responded to a single vehicle collision on Payn Street where a vehicle lost control and collided with a bridge, resulting in the driver becoming entrapped. Paramedics together with fire and rescue services utilized specialized rescue tools to successfully extricate the driver. Sadly, this incident resulted in three fatalities. 'One individual sustained serious injuries and received medical attention before being transported to the hospital for further care,' said Botha. Meanwhile, six people suffered injuries during a collision on the R617 near Mpophomeni late on Saturday evening. According to Midlands EMS, one person in one of the vehicles was trapped inside the vehicle and was in a critical condition. 'Specialised rescue equipment was used to stabilise and extricate the patient before they were transported to hospital. The other five people sustained injuries ranging from serious to moderate and were treated on scene before being transported to various hospitals for further care,' said Midlands EMS in a statement. Beaten, murdered and betrayed: What really happened to Luke Edwards?

Beaten, murdered and betrayed: What really happened to Luke Edwards? Luke Edwards, a 32-year-old described as bright, disciplined and full of promise, went into a facility seeking help. Instead, he died a violent and painful death, The Witness reports. His beaten, bloody, and half-clothed body was found just metres away from the Tetelestai Recovery Centre in KZN that he had been admitted into. He had no shirt or shoes, and his injuries told a horrific story. This week, Amanzimtoti police confirmed the arrest of four suspects in connection with his murder. Private investigator Brad Nathanson, hired by the Edwards family, said Luke's body showed clear signs of severe assault. 'It would be too gruesome to describe the state Edwards' body was found in,' said Nathanson. 'In my 45 years as an investigator, it was one of the most upsetting scenes I have ever seen.' Luke's father, Duncan Edwards, said the pain of losing his son under such brutal circumstances is indescribable. 'No words will ever describe the pain of seeing my son like that. Luke was not a drug addict. He was sick and needed care. We placed our trust in the wrong hands. They failed him,' he said. 'Luke was extremely clever, played a lot of chess, went to the gym daily and was proficient in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. 'He was not addicted to any other drugs, and his system was completely clear of any drugs [other than marijuana],' he added. He said the family turned to Nathanson to uncover what happened. 'Brad has been amazing. He has helped us to answer almost all the questions we have been asking ourselves as a family,' he said. 'This act was senseless. A parent sends their child to a facility for them to get well, not to be murdered. '[There is] no motive other than entitled bullies who went too far and then feared the repercussions of their actions. The men responsible for Luke's death must face recompense. Well done detectives at SAPS Amanzimtoti. 'My sincere condolences to the Edwards family,' Nathanson said. Nathanson also questioned the qualification of some people who reside at the rehabilitation facility, receiving board and lodging in exchange for acting as volunteer 'monitors'. 'They are going to argue that these 'monitors' at the facility are not their 'employees'. Once again taking two steps away from the truth. Technically, these monitors don't work for the rehabilitation centre. 'They volunteer for benefits,' said Nathanson. Amanzimtoti SAPS spokesperson Captain Charlene van der Spuy confirmed that four suspects, aged between 24 and 28, were arrested on Thursday. A fifth person was arrested and charged with assault GBH for attacking a witness in the case. He appeared in Amanzimtoti Court on June 17, 2025. The accused are due in the Umlazi Magistrate's Court on June 30. The Tetelestai Recovery Centre, where Luke had been admitted prior to his murder, denied any involvement in Luke's death and said he was not harmed while under their care. 'Tetelestai Recovery Centre has no staff member, manager, board member or director who has ever been formally charged or convicted of any crime related to abuse, assault, or negligence,' said managing director Donovan de Klerk in a post on Facebook. We are fully co-operating with SAPS Amanzimtoti, and will continue to provide them with all documentation and assistance required. 'We have also instructed our legal team to monitor all public commentary and consider legal steps against anyone making false, misleading, or defamatory statements that may be causing reputational or operational harm.' In the Facebook post, De Klerk presents the facility's version of events. According to him: Luke Edwards was admitted to Tetelestai Recovery Centre on a voluntary basis. On April 8, at 23.06, Luke left the Centre without authorisation. This was documented and escalated internally, and our protocols were followed. On April 9, at 01:30, CCTV footage from a neighbouring facility, a retirement home, shows Luke alive, coherent, fully clothed, and without visible injuries. Later that morning, Luke was tragically discovered dead, lying in a big pool of blood on the Retirement Home property. Circumstances surrounding his death, including details regarding his injuries, are the subject of an active SAPS investigation, and we will not speculate on any cause or timeline. 'We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Luke Edwards. 'His untimely passing is a tragedy, and our thoughts are with all affected,' said De Klerk. Tragic loss: Chatsworth teacher fatally stabbed outside school

A tribute placed at Joseph Nyawose's classroom after his murder Image: Supplied The Chatsworth community is in mourning following the tragic stabbing of Joseph Nyawose, a beloved teacher at Merry Hill Primary. Nyawose, 29, of Bayview, was stabbed three times in the chest on Monday morning and collapsed at the school's entrance. He succumbed to his injuries in hospital later that day. One suspect, who was allegedly found packing his belongings at his home, was arrested by the police from the Khokhoba Informal Settlement in Bayview. Nyawose, a Grade 5 form teacher, taught at the school for five years. He specialised in isiZulu, technology and creative arts. Nyawose was also a soccer referee and chaperoned the school's soccer team. Brandon Pillay, the chairperson of the Bayview Community Policing Forum, said: 'It is alleged that Joseph and the alleged perpetrator had a previous altercation. On Monday morning, there was a confrontation and Joseph was stabbed three times in his chest. The perpetrator then ran off. Somebody alerted the teachers and he was rushed to hospital. Joseph was stabilised but he succumbed to his injuries and passed away in the afternoon. 'Members of the CPF from the area alerted police about the suspect's whereabouts. That's when the suspect found out that Joseph had died. Police went to the settlement with CPF members and security officers. They allegedly found him in his shack, packing his belongings. A gas gun was found." He said the community was saddened by the tragic and untimely passing of Nyawose "a young teacher who was in the prime of his life". "We extend our deepest condolences to the family and the school. Joseph was loved by everyone, and made a positive impact in the lives of the children." Jaychand Inderlal, the school principal, said the pupils, teachers, staff and governing body members were saddened and shocked by Nyawose's death. 'He worked at the school from 2020, and taught the grade 5, 6 and 7 pupils. He was loved by staff and pupils. Joseph was kind in nature, respectful and always willing to help. He mentored the pupils, who were fond of him." "He said he wanted to be a teacher to help youngsters to be good adults. He loved teaching, and interacted well with the other teachers. He was an inspiration to the pupils, and he would never shy away from hard work, or extra work. We will remember him for his kind ways, and his gentle nature. His death has left a void in the school." Nyawose's funeral will be held in his hometown of Izingolweni, near Port Shepstone, on Sunday. The school will host a memorial on July 30, after schools reopen for the third term. THE POST
