Buddhist circuit in focus, UP looks to strengthen tourism, investment ties with Japan
Meanwhile, a delegation led by state Finance Minister Suresh Khanna is meeting investors in Japan.
Tourism Department officials said besides the Buddhist Circuit, the state is preparing an elaborate plan to showcase investment opportunities in meditation centers, hotels, and cultural infrastructure under public private partnership (PPP) mode.
The foundation of the ties was laid last year during the visit of Yamanashi prefecture Governor Kotaro Nagasaki, who was accompanied by leading Japanese business delegates. They not only signed MOUs for industrial cooperation but also discussed opportunities in tourism exchange with a joint promotion of Mount Fuji and hot springs in Japan, and Buddhist and cultural destinations such as Sarnath, Shravasti and Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh.
'Familiarisation trips from Japan are being regularly organised by the state Tourism Department to showcase the Buddhist Circuit in Uttar Pradesh, which is deeply intertwined with the life of the Buddha. The idea is to showcase the significant role of UP in the global Buddhist pilgrimage trail and encourage tourism exchange with Japan,' said a senior government official.
Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said, 'The state has seen a three-fold rise in tourist footfall the last eight years, and this reflects our focused strategy and global engagement. Our vision is to transform the Buddhist Circuit into a world-class spiritual and cultural gateway by integrating infrastructure, international connectivity and community involvement. We are welcoming countries like Japan to partner with us in building Buddhist temples, meditation centres, wellness retreats, and hospitality projects under PPP mode.'
With Kushinagar getting much attention in the past, the focus now is on developing infrastructure and cultural centres in Kaushambi and Farrukhabad districts where the government will invest on meditation centers or developing Buddhist tourist sites.
'In 2016, nearly 28 lakh tourists visited the Buddhist sites in UP. The number nearly tripled by 2024. Kaushambi witnessed a massive jump from just over 2 lakh tourists to more than 24 lakh visitors. Kushinagar witnessed a jump to 22 lakh from 9 lakh, while Sarnath remained a leading destination with 11.8 lakh visitors in the past year,' said Mukesh Kumar Meshram, Principal Secretary, Tourism and Culture.
The delegation led by Finance Minister Suresh Khanna is camping in Japan for the last three days, to participate in the World Expo in Osaka and hold B2B meetings with potential investors. On Thursday, the delegation, also comprising Principal Secretary, Infrastructure and Industries, Alok Kumar, explored tie-ups in the semiconductor sector and academics.
Officials said the delegation explored semiconductor collaboration with Tokyo Electron Limited (TEL) in a meeting with the company's Executive Vice President (Global Sales Division and India Business) Takeshi Okubo.
During the meeting, the TEL's possibility of collaborating in semiconductor manufacturing, skill development and establishing global capability centres (GCCs) in UP were discussed.
Khanna with officials from Invest UP also visited the Osaka Prefectural Assembly to explore investment in capacity-building, youth upskilling and technology exchange. At the World Expo 2025, academic collaborations with Portugal (University of Guarda) were also discussed, it is learnt.

US & Japanese airlines cancel flights as 8.8 magnitude earthquake triggers pacific-wide tsunami alert, travelers urged to stay updated
A major 8.8-magnitude earthquake near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula triggered tsunami warnings across the northern Pacific, forcing several airlines to cancel or divert flights, particularly in Hawaii and Japan. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) confirmed waves of up to 4 feet in some areas, and while no major injuries were reported, authorities across countries took preventive steps. The tsunami alert disrupted air travel, caused evacuations in coastal areas, and prompted governments to issue urgent safety notices. US airlines halt flights to Hawaii Following the tsunami warning, US carriers including Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines suspended or rerouted flights scheduled to land in Hawaii. The airports affected include Maui (OGG), Oahu (HNL), Kona (KOA), and Lihue (LIH). Alaska Airlines confirmed it is 'monitoring a tsunami warning for the Hawaiian Islands and portions of the state of Alaska and assessing our flight operations.' Flights en route to Hawaii were either diverted or returned to the mainland. A travel waiver was issued to allow passengers flexibility in adjusting their bookings. The airline added, 'We are monitoring airport conditions with government agencies and could see operational impacts.' Japan records Tsunami waves, cancels services Japan's Meteorological Agency recorded a 40-centimetre tsunami in Tokachi on Hokkaido's southern shore. Cities along Japan's Pacific coast were on high alert, with expected waves as high as 3 metres. Transport services in Japan were also disrupted. Sendai Airport closed its runway around 10:15 am local time and advised travelers to check with their respective airlines for updates. Ferry routes between Hokkaido and Aomori, as well as services from Tokyo to nearby islands, were temporarily suspended. Japanese nuclear facilities reported no issues. Despite some people seeking medical help, no serious injuries were confirmed. In Hawaii, tsunami sirens were heard in Honolulu on Tuesday evening, with the first waves expected around 7 pm local time. New Zealand, located about 6,000 miles from the quake's epicentre, issued its own warning for 'strong and unusual currents,' urging people to evacuate beaches and estuaries immediately. Warnings and safety protocols continue In Russia, the town of Severo-Kurilsk in the Kuril Islands experienced the first tsunami wave. Governor Valery Limarenko stated that residents had been safely moved to higher ground. The Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences noted this as Kamchatka's strongest quake since 1952. Authorities warned of potential aftershocks over the next month and advised residents to avoid coastal areas. Teresito Bacolcol of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology noted that while the waves may appear small, they could still pose danger to swimmers and coastal residents over a prolonged period. What causes a Tsunami? Tsunamis are triggered by sudden vertical shifts in the seafloor, often due to shallow earthquakes or large underwater landslides. As these waves move from deep to shallow waters, they rise in height and can cause flooding and damage along coastlines. This event marks one of the most powerful earthquakes globally since the 2011 Japan quake. As of now, there are no reports of fatalities, but authorities across affected regions remain on alert as they assess damage and continue to monitor sea conditions. Airlines and emergency agencies are coordinating responses, and passengers have been advised to stay updated with official announcements.

The Fed sets rates on Wednesday, and while policymakers are widely expected to stand pat, investors will be watching closely for signs that an interest rate cut may be on the way later this year. Similarly, the BOJ is seen keeping policy steady on Thursday, but markets will search for clues on when the central bank is likely to resume rate hikes. Live Events On Friday, most U.S. trade partners that have not agreed deals with Washington will receive higher tariff rates. "There are still a lot of uncertainties over tariffs, and that's going to limit the upside for stocks," said Maki Sawada, an equities strategist at Nomura Securities. As a result, "there's no particular sense of direction" in Japanese stock trading currently, she said. Airlines made up the worst performing Topix sub-index among the 33 industry groupings, led lower by a more than 4% drop for ANA Holdings following its earnings report. How Cultural Crossover Drives India's Role In The Global Taste Economy
India's instant noodles market tends to offer a dizzying variety — from fiery Korean Samyang Buldak ramen and Japanese UFO noodles to Singapore's KOKA and Indonesian Indomie. India's food shelves have gone global, and the country, along with its growing expat population, is reaping the rewards. For perspective, India's instant noodles market tends to offer a dizzying variety — from fiery Korean Samyang Buldak ramen and Japanese UFO noodles to Singapore's KOKA and Indonesian Indomie — all at the tap of a Blinkit or Instamart order. The numbers tell the story. Global market research consulting firm Mordor Intelligence estimates India's instant noodles market alone to register a CAGR of over 15 per cent between 2025 and 2030. As per a Moneycontrol analysis, imports of Korean noodles and snacks climbed from US $1.5 million in FY 2020 to US $12 million in FY 2024, which is a staggering eight‑fold surge. And the World Instant Noodles Association ranks India third globally behind China/Hong Kong and Indonesia, with consumption of instant noodle servings amounting to over 8.3 billion in 2024. Beyond Asia, India's expat‑friendly pantry now includes niche imports from further afield. Australian and New Zealand based choices include Tim Tams, Whittaker's, Vegemite and Manuka honey, which have small but loyal followings. Breakfast staples like Sanitarium's Weet‑Bix and So Good milks are finding shelf space in urban India, catering to health‑focused buyers. Sweden's Marabou chocolates and Wasa crackers, Finland's Fazer, Germany's Ritter Sport, and Stroopwafels from the Netherlands are fetched comfortably through quick gourmet e-commerce. For expats, this means comfort food — once a suitcase luxury — now arrives in minutes. For retailers, it's a lucrative opportunity. Global management consulting firm Kearney anticipates India's quick commerce grocery market to grow threefold between 2024 and 2027, reaching about Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 1.7 lakh crore as demand ripples across the country. It's not a one‑way street, either. Indian brands have long been gaining traction overseas. Nestlé India's Maggi, India's unequivocal leader in instant noodles, is currently exported to Nestlé in Canada, UK, Singapore and Kenya, and to third parties in the US, Australia and New Zealand. Kotak Securities notes Haldiram's presence in over 80 countries, supported by a network of 35 sole distributors. It established its first overseas factory in the UK in 2016. Earlier this year in February, the company launched its first international quick-service restaurant in Dubai. Meanwhile, Bikaji boasts a network of 550 distributors and over 250 varieties of sweets, snacks, frozen and instant foods through the likes of ras malai, rabri and milk cakes, prevalent in over 30 major American, Gulf and European countries. Parle's cookies, Cheeslings and creme sandwiches are yet another popular choice. Catering to the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Middle East, the company has manufacturing units in several countries — Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Nepal and Mexico. As per data from the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, India's Exports of Ready To Eat (RTE) products rose by a considerable 24 per cent to $ 394 million in 2021-22 compared to the previous year, while India's exports of Ready to Eat (RTE), Ready to Cook (RTC) and Ready to Serve (RTS) products collectively stood at over $2 billion in 2020-21. These products were shipped majorly to the US (18.73 per cent), UAE (8.64 per cent), Canada (4.77 per cent), Australia (4.2 per cent), UK (2.88 per cent), and Singapore (2.01 per cent). India has turned into a 24/7 global pantry, where expats find familiar home brands as easily as locals reach for local comfort snacks. Rising demand for imported foods and the outbound success of Indian snack brands underscore the country's dual role as both a consumer and exporter in the global taste economy. tags : economy food view comments Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: July 30, 2025, 12:55 IST News business How Cultural Crossover Drives India's Role In The Global Taste Economy Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
