LAHAD DATU: Southeast Asia's largest Battery Energy Storage System (Bess), with a capacity of 100MW and energy storage of 400MWh, has begun operations and is now connected to the Sabah grid. Sabah Electricity CEO Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said the system, developed since September 2024, currently supports 50MW of peak reserve capacity and will reach its full capacity of 100MW by early August. He said the facility would help stabilise the electricity supply in Sabah's east coast, where users have experienced fluctuations. The site visit on Monday was also joined by Elopura Power CEO Qaddafi Abdullah Bajerai. Mohd Yaakob said Sabah Electricity was entrusted by the Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos) and the State Government to deliver the project on time and improve the state's sustainable energy supply. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Trump threatens Japan with up to 35% tariff ahead of deadline

Published on: Wednesday, July 02, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 02, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: While Trump imposed a sweeping 10 percent tariff on imports from most trading partners in April, he unveiled -- then paused -- higher rates on dozens of economies to allow room for negotiations. - AFP pic WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said Tuesday a trade deal with Japan was unlikely before the July 9 deadline, threatening to raise tariffs on Japanese imports to 30 or 35 percent. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump criticized Japan's reluctance to accept imports of US rice, as well as the imbalance in auto trade between the two countries. 'I'm not sure we're going to make a deal,' Trump said. 'I doubt it with Japan, they're very tough.' While Trump imposed a sweeping 10 percent tariff on imports from most trading partners in April, he unveiled -- then paused -- higher rates on dozens of economies to allow room for negotiations. This pause expires July 9, meaning the elevated rates are due to kick in next week if countries fail to reach agreements with Washington to avert them. To date, only two pacts have been announced. One was a broad framework with Britain and the other a deal to temporarily lower steep tit-for-tat duties with China. Trump said he was going to write a letter to Japan, asking them to 'pay a 30 percent, 35 percent or whatever the number is that we determine' because of the 'big trade deficit' with Tokyo. 'It's very unfair to the American people,' he said. Japan, a key US ally and its biggest investor, is subject to the same 10 percent baseline tariffs imposed on most nations plus steeper levies on cars, steel and aluminium. Ryosei Akazawa, Tokyo's trade envoy, told Japanese reporters in Washington last month that some progress had been made during a fifth round of talks with the United States. However, he added: 'We've not been able to find a point of agreement yet'. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah creatives left out of Borneo.TV planning: Safva

Published on: Wednesday, July 02, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 02, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The sudden launch of Sabah's new digital streaming platform has drawn concern from local creatives who said they were not consulted ahead of the move. Sabah Film and Visual Association (Safva) President Chester Pang ( pic ) welcomed the initiative but said the lack of prior engagement with key industry stakeholders was disappointing. He said this absence of consultation risked sidelining experienced local content creators and undermining long-standing efforts toward a transparent and inclusive creative ecosystem in Sabah. In an open letter to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Pang requested clarity on policies for local producers, content selection guidelines, and official channels for communication with the industry. Safva, which represents Sabah at the national level through the Malaysian Film Association Coalition (Gafema), has worked with agencies such as Finas and RTM to promote the State's creative sector. Pang said Safva remained committed to supporting Sabah's digital creative development and stood ready to collaborate on future content initiatives. Launched by Hajiji on Tuesday, is positioned as a platform to showcase authentic Sabah content to the world, with the tagline 'Sabah in the Eyes of the World.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Published on: Wednesday, July 02, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 02, 2025 By: Faisal Asyraf, FMT Text Size: According to the charges, P Sathia Seelan deceived two Socso officers by submitting documents containing attendance lists and participant signatures for training courses that were never held. Kuala Lumpur: A businessman was fined RM300,000 by the sessions court here today after pleading guilty to cheating the Social Security Organisation (Socso) of nearly RM500,000 in incentive payments for courses that were never conducted. The claims were made under the Penjana Kerjaya 1.0 and 2.0 programmes between 2020 and 2021. Judge Suzana Hussin meted out the sentence on P Sathia Seelan, 52, the owner of Global Education Network Sdn Bhd (GENSB), after he pleaded guilty to 10 alternative charges read out to him in court. The court also ordered him to serve 10 months in jail if he failed to pay the fine. According to the charges, Sathia deceived two Socso officers by submitting documents containing attendance lists and participant signatures for training courses that were never held. The offences took place at the Socso office in Putrajaya between Dec 23, 2020 and Aug 12, 2021. His actions led Socso to pay RM496,000 to GENSB, payments the agency would not have made had it not been misled. The charges were framed under Section 417 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a maximum penalty of five years' jail, a fine or both. In the same proceedings, Sathia's accomplice, R Nanthagopal, 43, was also fined RM300,000 or 10 months' imprisonment in default, after pleading guilty to abetting him in committing the offences at the same time and place. Nanthagopal was charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 109, which provides the same punishment. Lawyer R Babu Naidu represented the duo while Noor Syazwani Sobry appeared for the prosecution. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
