Engineering, geology groups join forces

Kota Kinabalu: The Institute of Geology Malaysia (IGM) Sabah Chapter and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah have forged closer ties to tackle geological and engineering challenges. This was achieved during a courtesy visit by IGM Sabah to IEM Sabah branch office in Damai Point Commercial Centre here on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards strengthening collaboration between two of Malaysia's key professional bodies in engineering and geology. Advertisement This courtesy visit underscores a shared vision between IGM Sabah Chapter and IEM Sabah to strengthen professional synergy, promote public safety, and drive sustainable development through integrated expertise. The IGM Sabah Chapter delegation was led by its Chairman, Prof. Ts. Gr. Dr Rodeano bin Roslee, alongside Vice Chairman Dr. A. Khairut Termizi, Lee Kiun You, Rollix, and Khairee Saad, all representing the Industry and Professionalism section. They were warmly received by IEM Sabah's leadership, including its Chairman Datuk Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob Jaafar, together with the Vice Chairman 1 Ir. Ts. Tan KJ, and its Vice Chairman 2 Ir. Paul Yap, Honorary Treasurer Ir. Jack Wong, Past Chairman Ir. CC Lo, and Sofea Ruzalie from the Young Engineers Section (YES). The meeting provided a platform for IGM Sabah to introduce its institutional background, strategic objectives, and current initiatives aimed at advancing the geological profession in Malaysia, particularly in Sabah. Emphasis was placed on the growing need for synergy between geologists and engineers particularly in tackling contemporary issues such as climate resilience, geological stability assessments, seismic hazard mitigation, natural resource development, and environmental sustainability. Both institutions explored opportunities for collaboration, including organizing joint technical seminars and training programs, sharing knowledge on geological hazards and mitigation, engaging in public awareness campaigns on geology and engineering safety, and supporting the professional development of young engineers and geoscientists. Datuk Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob expressed his appreciation for the visit and reaffirmed IEM Sabah's commitment to multidisciplinary cooperation for the advancement of the professions and the well-being of the community. 'Sabah, with its complex geological landscape, stands to benefit greatly from closer ties between geologists and engineers,' he said. Echoing this sentiment, Prof. Dr. Rodeano said effective engineering solutions must be informed by sound geological understanding. Southeast Asia's largest battery storage system begins operation in Lahad Datu

LAHAD DATU: Southeast Asia's largest Battery Energy Storage System (Bess), with a capacity of 100MW and energy storage of 400MWh, has begun operations and is now connected to the Sabah grid. Sabah Electricity CEO Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said the system, developed since September 2024, currently supports 50MW of peak reserve capacity and will reach its full capacity of 100MW by early August. He said the facility would help stabilise the electricity supply in Sabah's east coast, where users have experienced fluctuations. The site visit on Monday was also joined by Elopura Power CEO Qaddafi Abdullah Bajerai. Sabah Electricity honours outstanding staff
Award recipients with the SE chairman, board of directors, and senior management. KOTA KINABALU (April 30): Recognising outstanding employees is key to fostering a positive, productive, and innovative work environment, said Sabah Electricity (SE) Chief Executive Officer Mohd Yaakob Jaafar. He made the remark during the 2024 Excellent Service Awards Ceremony and the inaugural Sabah Electricity Top Achiever (SETA) 2024/2025 event, held last Friday. A total of 36 SE employees from both technical and non-technical departments were honoured for their dedication and outstanding service throughout 2024. 'Recognition such as this encourages proactive performance and inspires employees to believe in their potential and ability to contribute meaningfully to the success and growth of the organisation,' Mohd Yaakob said in a statement today. For the first time, SE introduced the SETA Awards to celebrate individuals and teams who have made exceptional contributions in driving the company's goals, values, and aspirations forward. Mohd Yaakob added that these awards not only serve as motivation but also energise the workforce to stay productive, committed, and loyal to the organisation. 'When diverse skills are brought together, teams generate collaborative creativity, improving the chances of achieving optimal solutions and outcomes. This shared innovation is what drives new ideas and ensures the company remains competitive and relevant,' he said. The SETA 2024/2025 awards were presented in the following categories: System Loss Award to Watimin Sahamin, Project Champion Award to the Civil, Facility Management & Special Projects Department, Innovation Digital Award to the MyNCS Group and CERA Department Kota Kinabalu Team Spirit Award to the SE Sports & Recreation Club. In addition to SETA, special recognition was given to employees who demonstrated exceptional dedication and a strong commitment to personal and professional development. Mohammad Fauzi Awang, Chief Engineer of Maintenance Special Services, Transmission Department, received the Rising Star Award for his outstanding performance, strong dedication, and active involvement in initiatives aimed at enhancing SE's service delivery. He was also recognised for presenting a technical paper at the 12th Asia Pacific International Conference on Lightning. The Inspiring Leadership Award went to Rachel Lim, a trailblazing female engineer who heads the Transmission Division. Rachel made history as the first Malaysian woman to be certified as a 275kV Electrical Services Engineer. Under her leadership, her team also earned the Outstanding Team Award for their cohesive and high-performing work culture. Hafizi Alfiasyah Polus Abdullah was recognised for his innovation and consistency in developing solutions such as the Meter House Project, which has helped reduce electricity loss in squatter areas of Semporna. Meanwhile, Budianto Joni received the Customer Choice Award for his unwavering dedication to customer service, handling challenging public interactions with professionalism and care. Mohd Yaakob emphasised that SE will continue implementing programmes to motivate staff, strengthen team dynamics, and enhance service delivery across all departments. 'I believe motivated employees will naturally strive for excellence, which ultimately benefits not only the individual but the organisation as a whole,' he said. He noted that SE upholds a high-performance culture rooted in shared values namely, Integrity, Customer First, Business Excellence and Compassion which continue to shape the company's success and reputation. 'Sabah Electricity is proud of its talented workforce, whose creativity and commitment drive exceptional outcomes,' he added. Moving forward, the SETA Awards will be held annually to honour employee achievements, promote a culture of excellence, encourage healthy competition, and foster teamwork across the organisation. The event was graced by SE chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau, his wife Datin Seri Panglima Dr Jainah Sintian, as well as board members Datuk Brandon Keith Soh, Datuk Petrus Gimbad, and Huzairi Zainal Abdin. Mohd Yaakob re-elected IEM Sabah head

Mohd Yaakob Jaafar has been re-elected to the post during the body's 50th Annual General Meeting (AGM) last Saturday. Supporting him for the new term are Vice Chairmen Ir. Ts. KJ Tan, JP, and Ir. Paul Yap. Ir. Dr. Michael Tay and Ir. Wong Chen Jack were appointed as Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer, respectively, while Datuk Ir. Willy Chin was named Immediate Past Chairman. Eight committee members completing the new line-up are Ir. Wah Kheng Haw, Ir. Arius Yu, Ir. Randy Kuan, Ir. Brandon Galimam, Ir. Leona Ng, Ir. Aishahturizdah Ashgul, Ir. Nicholas Lim and Ir. Thien Sen Fong. 137 members attended the meeting. Mohd Yaakob stays as IEM Sabah Branch chairman

Mohd Yaakob Hj Jaafar was retained as the chairman of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (Sabah Branch) during its 50th Annual General Meeting last Saturday at Le Meridien Hotel, Kota Kinabalu. The meeting started off with Mohd Yaakob welcoming 137 members to the annual affair. The event was made more meaningful with IEM President Ir. Prof. Dr. Jeffrey Chiang joining the meeting. Besides the reporting of the branch performance and audit statement, the members were also informed of new and upcoming events. These include the revamp of its website, the settlement of headquarters soft loan and the invitation to join the branch's Golden Jubilee Dinner on 14 June 2025. The AGM ended with the members witnessing the election of the new executive committee for the 2025/2026 session. Mohd Yaakob is assisted by Vice Chairmen Ir. Ts. KJ Tan, JP and Ir. Paul Yap. The Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer are Ir. Dr. Michael Tay and Ir. Wong Chen Jack respectively while Immediate Past Chairman is Datuk Ir. Willy Chin. The eight Committee Members are Ir.
