Assam professor recites Islamic verse, wife wipes off sindoor to bluff terrorists
SILCHAR: Debasish Bhattacharya is well-versed in Islamic scripture. That knowledge helped the Hindu associate professor of Bengali in Silchar's Assam University snatch life from the jaws of death during the terror strike in Pahalgam on Tuesday.
With a gun held against his head by one of the terrorists, the 58-year-old Bengali Brahmin was asked to recite the first kalma if he wanted to live. 'Overwhelmed by fear, I began to chant the first kalma loudly. After some time, I realised the gunman had retreated, and we scrambled to a fence behind us. We climbed over it and fled into a jungle,' Bhattacharya said.
The professor had travelled to Kashmir for a vacation on April 21 with wife Madhumita Bhattacharya, a well-known danseuse, and their son, Drohadeep, a medic at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. 'My sister-in-law (Madhumita) told me over phone that when the terrorists began their assault, she swiftly removed her shakha-pola (traditional Hindu bangles) and wiped away her sindoor (vermilion) in a desperate attempt to prove they were not Hindus,' Indrani Das, Bhattacharya's sister, said in Silchar.
The professor recalled how the terrorists went about their macabre business. 'First, one of the gunmen shot dead a man standing next to me and was simultaneously asking people to recite the kalma. The victim's blood and flesh splattered onto my jacket. As the gunman approached us, I started to recite the kalma. The gunman asked me in Hindi and Urdu to recite loudly,' Bhattacharya said.

Parents allege RTE students facing ‘discrimination' in Chandkheda school
Ahmedabad: Parents of a number of students admitted under the Right to Education (RTE) Act at Asian Global School in Chandkheda have alleged that their children are facing discrimination and segregation. Despite repeated complaints to the education department, only formal notices have been issued so far, with no concrete action taken. According to the parents, around 46 RTE students have been affected by these issues. Parents alleged that RTE students have been segregated into a single classroom, denied access to the school canteen, and barred from using sports equipment and playground facilities—amenities freely available to fee-paying peers. These practices directly violate the inclusivity mandates laid out in the RTE Act. "Our children are being isolated and treated unfairly. Man kills daughter's husband at DMCH in suspected honour killing
Patna: In a case of suspected honour killing on Tuesday evening, a man shot dead his daughter's husband on the premises of the Darbhanga Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at Laheriasarai. The deceased was identified as Rahul Kumar (24), a second year BSc nursing student at the DMCH. The man was angry over his daughter's inter-caste love marriage with Rahul four months back, police said. Rahul had a love marriage with Tannu Priya (22), a first-year BSc nursing student at the same college. Rahul used to live on the upper floor of the hostel, while Tannu stayed on the ground floor of the same hostel. Police said, Tannu's father Premshankar Jha (45), a resident of Bangaon village in Saharsa district, reached the college's premises and shot Rahul from the point-blank range with a pistol in front of many students, killing him on the spot. Police said as Premshankar shot Rahul in his chest. The sound of the pistol shot caused chaos in the hostel. Students surrounded the accused and beat him up severely. Later, the police took him into custody and admitted him to the DMCH emergency department, where his condition is said to be critical.
