'World's greatest stadium' finally gets opening date after 2009 abandonment
Plans for the 70,000-seat stadium were put on the back-burner in 2009 as the club was thwarted with financial difficulties, but after finding £275million to complete the build, it is set to open its doors in 2027
Valencia's Nou Mestalla stadium has finally been given an opening date after being abandoned for 16 years. Dubbed the "world's greatest" stadium, the 70,000-seat arena was originally meant to open for the 2009/10 La Liga season.
However, when Valencia were blighted by financial troubles in 2008, questions arose as to whether the Los Ches would ever move into their new home. The six-time La Liga winners racked up monumental debts of around £350million, and failed to find a buyer for the Mestalla - which they still occupy to this day.
The club also saw a £90m bank loan rejected, which seemed to be the final nail in the coffin in terms of the relocation. As a result, plans were put on hold in 2009, and the development has been abandoned ever since.
That is until it was recently announced that Valencia have secured funding to the tune of £275m which will help them finally complete the construction of the Nou Mestalla - with an aim to rehome in 2027. A statement on the official Valencia website reads: "Valencia CF has successfully secured the full financing for Nou Mestalla — the most significant non-sporting project in the Club's history.
"Scheduled to open in 2027, Nou Mestalla will serve as a global benchmark for modern stadium developments. The modern state-of-the-art stadium will drive Valencia CF's growth and unlock new long-term sustainable revenue streams that will strengthen the Club's influence and competitiveness for decades to come."
Described as a "landmark and legacy project for the city," the stadium will also hope to serve as an "epicentre for sport" across the region. The statement added: "Nou Mestalla is not just a transformative investment for Valencia CF - it will be a landmark and legacy project for the city and is set to become an iconic symbol for Valencia CF fans, benefiting the city of Valencia, its residents, and visitors.
"This new stadium has been designed in line with the world 's leading multifunctional venues and is expected to multiply the revenue currently generated at the old Mestalla facility. Nou Mestalla will become the epicentre for sport, leisure, and entertainment in the city and throughout the wider Valencia region.
"Built to meet FIFA's highest stadium classification and featuring over 70,000 seats, nearly 10% of which will be Hospitality seating, transforming every match or event into a premium experience. A wide range of dining, leisure and event-hosting options will turn Nou Mestalla into a year-round entertainment venue which will in turn significantly increase the economic potential beyond the constraints of former Mestalla."
Speaking on the endeavour, President of Valencia CF Kiat Lim said: "This marks a historic milestone for Valencia CF. Securing this landmark financing gives us the green light to deliver Nou Mestalla — a world-class stadium that will power the Club's growth for generations.
"It is the clearest expression of our long-term commitment to Valencia, and a reflection of the trust and confidence the Club now commands in global financial markets. With this agreement, we are building more than a stadium — we are building the future of Valencia CF."
As a result, the Nou Mestalla could join a whole host of prestigious stadiums which will play host to the 2030 World Cup, which will take place across Spain, Portugal and Morocco - joining the likes of the Bernabeu, Camp Nou, the Estadio da Luz and the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on the list of potential candidates.

Arsenal's surprise bid for Valencia star Christian Mosquera REJECTED - as Spanish giants reveal price the Gunners must pay for defender
Arsenal 's bid for Valencia defender Christian Mosquera has been rejected by the LaLiga side as they have set their asking price for the Spanish youngster. The Gunners have entered talks for Mosquera, 20, as they look to find suitable cover for first-choice options William Saliba and Gabriel. While Mikel Arteta 's go-to pair have become one of the Premier League 's strongest defensive partnerships in recent seasons, Arsenal appear intent on strengthening their back-line depth. Such a move by Arsenal may have been prompted by the hamstring injury Gabriel suffered in April, along with a recognition that adding another high-calibre centre-back would give them the chance to occasionally rotate Saliba. The Frenchman, 24, started 35 Premier League matches last season having played every league game in 2023-24. Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta have identified Mosquera as a player they would like to sign this summer but have so far fallen short of Valencia's valuation of the player. The Spanish side are asking the north London side to pay his £17million (€20 million) release clause and have turned down an initial offer that fell short of that valuation according to Goal. Arsenal have been busy in their search for new recruits as they look to land a first Premier League title since 2004 off the back of three successive second-placed finishes under Arteta. With veteran midfielder Jorginho having left the club on a free transfer for Flamengo and the future of Thomas Partey uncertain, they have agreed a deal to sign Christian Norgaard from Brentford for £15million. Their biggest target this summer remains a striker - with both Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres of interest. While Sesko is believed to be Arsenal's preferred option, sources have indicated to MailSport that RB Leipzig are driving a hard bargain over Sesko because they know how desperate the Gunners are for a striker. Meanwhile, Gyokeres is said to have believed that he reached a gentleman's agreement with Sporting last summer that would see the Portuguese league champions accept a fee around €70million (£60m), including add-ons, at the end of the 2024-25 season. However, Sporting are now appearing to hold out for a significantly increased fee - with Gyokeres having a €100million (£84million) release clause in his current contract. Despite Gyokeres' apparent agitation for a move, Sporting president Frederico Varandas accused the Swede's team of attempting to 'blackmail' Sporting, while he reportedly threatened to go on strike after vowing to 'speak at the right time '. Arsenal have also been linked with a winger to bolster their options in attack, with Eberechi Eze and Rodrygo reportedly among their preferred targets. While they were also looking at Athletic Club's Nico Williams, he has already made clear that he intends to join Barcelona should he leave Bilbao. Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga will move to Emirates Stadium this summer after his £5million release clause was triggered by the Blues' London rivals. He will act as back-up to David Raya after previous number two Neto's loan spell ended and saw him return to Bournemouth - where Kepa impressed on loan himself last season.

Marcus Rashford rejects three Premier League clubs
Marcus Rashford has rejected three Premier League clubs while Barcelona are refusing to rule out a move for the Manchester United forward, according to reports in Spain. United are looking to sell Rashford this summer and the 27-year-old's brother and agent met with Barcelona's sporting director, Deco, last month in order to discuss a potential deal. Barcelona, however, are prioritising a move for Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams, who has agreed to join the La Liga champions following a meeting with Deco in Ibiza last week. Williams has a €58 million (£48.1m) release clause in his deal with Bilbao, who have been unhappy with Barcelona's approach and claim that their La Liga rivals would be unable to register the winger due to financial fair play restrictions. According to Sport, Barcelona are working on completing a deal to sign Williams but will still consider signing Rashford alongside the Spain international. Cristhian Mosquera transfer update as Valencia star speaks out after Arsenal bid
Arsenal's opening bid for Cristhian Mosquera was rejected but the Gunners aren't giving up on the Valencia defender, who's entered the final year of his current deal Valencia captain Jose Gaya has issued an update on the future of team-mate Cristhian Mosquera after he was the subject of an undisclosed bid from Arsenal. Mosquera, 21, has emerged as a target for the Gunners, who want to strengthen their defensive options in the summer transfer window. Arsenal saw their opening offer rejected, with Valencia playing hardball over his future. That's despite the Spaniard only having 12 months left of his existing contract. The Gunners won't give up on Mosquera, who recently helped Spain reach the quarter-finals of the under-21 European Championship. Academy coach Miguel-Angel Angulo hailed: "He is characterised by a physical condition and good technical qualities, powerful in the air, and mature for his age." Mosquera helped Spain win gold at Paris Olympic Games in 2024 before playing 41 times for Valencia last season.
