Cristhian Mosquera transfer update as Valencia star speaks out after Arsenal bid
Arsenal's opening bid for Cristhian Mosquera was rejected but the Gunners aren't giving up on the Valencia defender, who's entered the final year of his current deal
Valencia captain Jose Gaya has issued an update on the future of team-mate Cristhian Mosquera after he was the subject of an undisclosed bid from Arsenal. Mosquera, 21, has emerged as a target for the Gunners, who want to strengthen their defensive options in the summer transfer window.
Arsenal saw their opening offer rejected, with Valencia playing hardball over his future. That's despite the Spaniard only having 12 months left of his existing contract.
The Gunners won't give up on Mosquera, who recently helped Spain reach the quarter-finals of the under-21 European Championship. Reports claim that Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Bayer Leverkusen, Atletico Madrid and RB Leipzig also rate the right-footed centre-back highly.
Mosquera isn't the only in-demand Valencia youngster. There's also interest in Javi Guerra and Cesar Tarrega, but Gaya hopes that the trio will stay put.
Speaking to Spanish radio station A Punt, the Valencia star explained: "I would be delighted if all three could stay because I think they can give a lot this new season and bring a lot of joy to the fans.
"As of today, unless there's any breaking news, I think all three of them are still with us, and I hope it continues like this, and they continue to grow as players."
Valencia's focus is on tying Mosquera down to a new deal, as they don't intend to sell him or his two team-mates this summer. A problem for the La Liga side, though, is that the 21-year-old has already agreed personal terms with Arsenal, who value his ability to play as both a right-back and centre-back.

Earlier this month, Mosquera's agent, Sergio Barila, confirmed that his client was 'very happy' at Valencia, who've finally secured funding to complete a new stadium after years of setbacks. Barila also revealed that talks over a contract extension were ongoing.
Since joining Valencia aged 12, big things have been expected of Mosquera. Academy coach Miguel-Angel Angulo hailed: "He is characterised by a physical condition and good technical qualities, powerful in the air, and mature for his age."
Mosquera helped Spain win gold at Paris Olympic Games in 2024 before playing 41 times for Valencia last season. He played the full 90 minutes as his country lost to England under-21s in the last eight of the Euros.

Arsenal 's bid for Valencia defender Christian Mosquera has been rejected by the LaLiga side as they have set their asking price for the Spanish youngster. The Gunners have entered talks for Mosquera, 20, as they look to find suitable cover for first-choice options William Saliba and Gabriel. While Mikel Arteta 's go-to pair have become one of the Premier League 's strongest defensive partnerships in recent seasons, Arsenal appear intent on strengthening their back-line depth. Such a move by Arsenal may have been prompted by the hamstring injury Gabriel suffered in April, along with a recognition that adding another high-calibre centre-back would give them the chance to occasionally rotate Saliba. The Frenchman, 24, started 35 Premier League matches last season having played every league game in 2023-24. Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta have identified Mosquera as a player they would like to sign this summer but have so far fallen short of Valencia's valuation of the player. The Spanish side are asking the north London side to pay his £17million (€20 million) release clause and have turned down an initial offer that fell short of that valuation according to Goal. Arsenal have been busy in their search for new recruits as they look to land a first Premier League title since 2004 off the back of three successive second-placed finishes under Arteta. With veteran midfielder Jorginho having left the club on a free transfer for Flamengo and the future of Thomas Partey uncertain, they have agreed a deal to sign Christian Norgaard from Brentford for £15million. Their biggest target this summer remains a striker - with both Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres of interest. While Sesko is believed to be Arsenal's preferred option, sources have indicated to MailSport that RB Leipzig are driving a hard bargain over Sesko because they know how desperate the Gunners are for a striker. Meanwhile, Gyokeres is said to have believed that he reached a gentleman's agreement with Sporting last summer that would see the Portuguese league champions accept a fee around €70million (£60m), including add-ons, at the end of the 2024-25 season. However, Sporting are now appearing to hold out for a significantly increased fee - with Gyokeres having a €100million (£84million) release clause in his current contract. Despite Gyokeres' apparent agitation for a move, Sporting president Frederico Varandas accused the Swede's team of attempting to 'blackmail' Sporting, while he reportedly threatened to go on strike after vowing to 'speak at the right time '. Natalie Sawyer has hit back at criticism over Arsenal's push to sign Brentford captain Christian Norgaard. Arsenal are in the market for two new central midfielders this summer as Jorginho has already joined Flamengo for the Club World Cup, while Thomas Partey's contract is due to expire on Monday and an agreement over a new deal has not been reached. Martin Zubimendi is expected to join in a £55 million deal from Real Sociedad but Arsenal have also made a move this week to sign Norgaard from Brentford.
