Devin Gonor helps deliver El Camino Real another City baseball title
After spending one year on the freshman team and another year on junior varsity, Devin Gonor was an unknown left-handed pitcher when he made his varsity debut for El Camino Real last season. He beat Crespi, the defending Southern Section Division 2 champion, serving notice of a bright future.
There he was standing on the mound at Dodger Stadium on Saturday afternoon asked to deliver a 10th City Section championship for El Camino Real. He came through with a performance that will put him on a equal pedestal with all the great ECR players of the past, such as major leaguers Randy Wolf, Connor Jackson and Kurt Birkins.
'It's amazing. I can't even describe it,' Gonor said after the final out had been recorded.
Gonor threw a three-hit shutout in the Royals' 2-0 victory over Venice in the Open Division championship game. It was a breakthrough senior season in which he went 11-1 and ended with shutouts over Birmingham and the Gondoliers. He's committed to Concordia University in Nebraska.
'I grew up coming to Dodger Stadium watching Clayton Kershaw and Cody Bellinger,' he said. 'To be on the same field, it's something you can only dream of.'
Venice (28-3) came in as the No. 1 seed but could get little going against Gonor, who struck out five and walked two.
'Oh my Gosh, Devin was incredible,' catcher Adan Viner said. 'I expected nothing less. He was heavily using his change-up.'
El Camino Real (23-8) scored in the third inning for a 1-0 lead on a Luke Howe sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. An error on a ground ball allowed Luigi Tanner to reach base. There were two walks before Howe, El Camino Real's best hitter, lifted a fly ball to left field for the RBI.
The Royals added another run in the seventh on a walk, sacrifice and RBI triple from Tanner.
For coach Josh Lienhard, his team won 18 consecutive games against City Section opponents, relying on his outstanding pitching staff that also included Howe and Christian Gastelum, who performed well Saturday at first base catching throws in the dirt from the infielders.
El Camino Real ties Chatsworth for most City baseball titles at 10. It was the Royals' first title since 2016.
There were 4,200 tickets sold between the Division I game won by Carson 3-1 over Banning and the afternoon final. All four teams are expected to compete in the Southern California regionals in two weeks.

Nationals' James Wood becomes 1st player to receive 4 intentional walks since Barry Bonds
Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood entered Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Angels with 22 home runs and was looking for more when he was up at the plate. However, Angels pitchers decided to pitch around him for the most part. Wood had six plate appearances and was intentionally walked four times. It was the first time a batter was intentionally walked four times in a game since Barry Bonds in 2004. The only others to be intentionally walked four times in a game since at least 1955 were Roger Maris, Garry Templeton, Manny Ramirez and Andre Dawson, who received five intentional walks in May 1990. Wood did go 1-for-2 with a stolen base. The Nationals defeated the Angles, 7-4, in 11 innings. Wood has been one of the better players for the Nationals since he entered the league in 2024. He had 31 home runs and 105 RBI with a .274 batting average and a .863 OPS, according to his 162-game average. His numbers have been compared to Juan Soto and Bryce Harper. "Those are some of the best guys to put on a jersey," he said Saturday, via ESPN. "I definitely strive to be guys like that. They've been doing it -- Juan Soto for seven-plus years and Bryce Harper for 12-plus years -- I know I got a long way to go, but it's definitely cool." More importantly, Wood has to help get Washington back into the winning column. Despite the win against the Angels, the Nationals only improved to 35-49. Washington hasn't won more than 80 games since 2019 – the same year Washington won the World Series that year. Skenes, Misiorowski and Burns are part of an influx of talented young pitchers in the NL Central
Chase Burns arrived in the big leagues with a flourish, striking out the first five hitters he faced for Cincinnati in his debut against the New York Yankees. He's just the latest young pitcher in the NL Central to show his impressive potential. Pittsburgh's Paul Skenes, of course, finished third in the National League Cy Young race as a rookie last year. More recently, Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski threw 11 straight hitless innings to start his career and then beat Skenes in a head-to-head matchup Wednesday. Now Burns, the No. 2 pick in last year's draft, has reached the majors, and Skenes could have some help in his own rotation whenever Bubba Chandler — MLB Pipeline's No. 2-ranked prospect — is promoted to the Pirates. These pitchers have given the NL Central quite a shot in the arm after the Chicago Cubs have appeared in control of the division at various points. Milwaukee has won 22 of its last 31 and trails the Cubs by just two games now. Cincinnati has won 14 of its last 21. Even the last-place Pirates have played better than .500 baseball for over a month, and they just swept three straight from the New York Mets by a combined score of 30-4. Four teams in the NL Central are at least four games over .500, and every team has an ERA under 4.00 — the only division that can say that. These young starters, who have joined more established pitchers like Freddy Peralta of the Brewers and Hunter Greene of the Reds, suggest the future is bright in the division — as long as you're not a hitter. SF slump The Giants dropped two of three to the lowly Chicago White Sox immediately after losing three in a row to Miami. San Francisco is now 7 1/2 games behind the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers and has gone 4-8 since its big trade for Rafael Devers. Devers has hit .217 since arriving from the Boston Red Sox. Honorable mention: Baltimore fell behind 6-0 in the second Friday night before blowing out Tampa Bay 22-8. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Orioles became the first American League or National League team to win by at least 14 runs after trailing by six.
