Nuggets champion pens touching tribute after joining EuroLeague powerhouse

Yahoo17-07-2025
A former Denver Nuggets title winner has moved on to his next pro hoops home.
Eurohoops reports that reserve Nuggets combo forward Vlatko Cancar has inked a two-season deal to join Italian EuroLeague powerhouse club Olimpia Milano.
The 6-foot-8 Slovenian forward, 28, was selected with the No. 49 pick by Denver way back in 2017, although he kept playing overseas before making his NBA debut in 2019-20.

Thanks in part to major health issues, Cancar was only a consistent part of the Nuggets' rotation during the team's run to the 2023 championship. In 60 healthy regular season bouts that year, he averaged 5.0 points on .476/.374/.927 shooting splits, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 14.8 minutes per. He was squeezed out of then-head coach Michael Malone's rotation in the playoffs, however, averaging just 2.0 mop-up minutes a game in five contests.
A torn ACL sidelined Cancar for the entirety of 2023-24. Though healthy, he played just 13 games for Denver in 2024-25. The writing was on the wall for his NBA future.
Cancar took to his Instagram to write a tribute to the only NBA team he's ever known."Thank you Denver ❤️," Cancar began. "To take a chance on a kid from Koper Slovenia, believing in me and creating me as a person and basketball player a big hug and thank you for all the memories through the good and bad."
"In this beautiful 6 years [I] met a lot of great people some connected with basketball and a lot outside the court so thanks to you all as well, [I] can say Denver is my second home," Cancar wrote. "You will always have a fan for life and hopefully our paths cross down the road again so it is not a goodbye but a see you later!"
Across five healthy NBA seasons (he was with the team while hurt in 2023-24, hence his listing six) — all with Denver — Cancar averaged 3.4 points on .472/.354/.847 shooting splits, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.9 assists a night.

Conor McGregor loses appeal over civil sexual assault case, potential perjury probe still active

Conor McGregor has lost his appeal against the civil jury finding in favor of an Irish woman, Nikita Hand, who claimed she was raped by the UFC star in Dublin hotel in December 2018. The three-judge Court of Appeal dismissed all grounds for appeal Thursday in Dublin. Hand was present for the ruling, McGregor was not. McGregor denies Hands' claims, insisting they had 'vigorous' and consensual sex. As part of his appeal, McGregor's team claimed that the trial judge incorrectly directed the High Court civil jury to decide whether he 'assaulted,' rather than 'sexually assaulted' Hand. Justice Brian O'Moore — who sat on the three-judge panel alongside Justice Isobel Kennedy and Justice Michael McGrath — said the appeal court had no doubt that the effect of the civil court judge Justice Alexander Owen's charge was that Hand's allegation against McGregor was that he raped her. O'Moore claimed it was 'unreal' to suggest the jury would have been confused due to the 'brutally clear' way the trial judge had framed the allegation. Another core ground of the appeal was that the trial judge had erroneously permitted a line of questioning pertaining to McGregor's multiple 'no comment' responses he gave to investigating officers after providing them with a preprepared statement in response to the allegations. This ground was also dismissed as the Court of Appeal offered various instances where the trial judge warned the jury about not making adverse inferences against McGregor from his no comment replies. The jury were also told to disregard certain "no comment" answers as having no evidential value. According to the judge, with regard to his appeal efforts, McGregor failed to show a real risk of an unfair trial and his side had not been deprived of the right of an effective cross-examination. Hand's lawyers opposed the appeal and urged the court to allow the November 2024 jury decision that McGregor had assaulted her — and its award of €250,000 damages to her — to stand. An order requiring McGregor to pay Hand's estimated €1.3 million ($1.58 million) legal costs was stayed pending the outcome of the appeal. The court today ordered that Hand should get her costs in the High Court and appeal court against McGregor. Withdrawn evidence McGregor had initially sought to introduce new evidence to the appeal from a couple, Samantha O'Reilly and Steven Cummins, who were neighbors of Hand's at the time of the incident. O'Reilly, in a sworn affidavit, claimed to have witnessed Hand being pushed and potentially kicked by her then-partner hours after she returned home from the hotel where a civil jury found that she was raped by McGregor. Claiming she saw the incident take place from her own home, O'Reilly swore that although she did not see any blows being landed, by the body movement of Hand's partner, she believed that he kicked Hand after he pushed her. Hand described O'Reilly's and Cummins' claims as 'lies.' Earlier this month, McGregor's legal team told the Court of Appeal that they were withdrawing the application to submit the claims as new evidence. In response to this, Hand's lawyers asked that the matter be referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions to investigate perjury. The three-judge court confirmed that it would be referred to the DPP. According to the Irish Times, 'the normal procedure when such referrals are made is that the materials are sent by the DPP to An Garda Síochána (Irish police) and the latter then considers whether they involve possible perjury.'

West Ham forward Lucas Paqueta cleared of spot-fixing charges

West Ham forward Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of alleged spot-fixing after being accused of deliberately receiving yellow cards to influence betting markets. The English Football Association confirmed Thursday that an independent panel had found the charges unproven. 'Lucas Paqueta denied the charges against him, and the Regulatory Commission found them to be not proven following a hearing,' the FA said in a statement. The ruling brings to an end a long-running case against the Brazil international, who was charged in May 2024. The FA had claimed the 27-year-old Paqueta intentionally sought to be booked in four separate games — against Leicester, Aston Villa, Leeds and Bournemouth between November 2022 and August 2023 'in order for one or more persons to profit from betting.' Blackstone Chambers, representing Paqueta, said it was understood to be the longest case in FA history. Paqueta was charged with breaches of FA Rule E5 related to integrity of matches and competitions. The rule sates a participant 'shall not, directly or indirectly, seek to influence for an improper purpose the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in or in connection with, a football match or competition.' The panel did uphold two charges against Paqueta for failing to answer questions and provide information to the FA's investigation. The governing body said it would determine an appropriate sanction at the earliest opportunity. Full reasons for the verdict have not yet been published. ___ AP soccer:

Serie B Side Avellino Join Feyenoord, Sassuolo, Olympiakos & Girona In The Race For Inter Milan Defender

Serie B side Avellino have joined the race to sign Inter Milan defender Tomas Palacios. This according to Italian outlet FCInterNews. They report that Feyenoord, Sassuolo, Olympiakos, Girona, and Rizaspor are also keen on the Argentine. Inter Milan are weighing up the future of young defender Tomas Palacios. The Argentine joined the Nerazzurri last summer. They reportedly paid a fee of over €10 million to sign him. However, so far Palacios has not exactly become a fixture in the Nerazzurri team. The young defender received only a couple of brief run-outs off the bench for Inter last summer. Then in January, Tomas Palacios joined Monza on loan. (Photo by) The intention for Palacios's loan at Monza was clearly for the young defender to receive more playing time. And the Argentine did certainly feature more than he had for Inter. However, at the same time, it was a difficult environment for Palacios. The Brianzoli were in a spiral towards relegation, and so it was often more experienced defenders who started. In any event, Tomas Palacios is back at Inter this summer after the end of his loan at the U-Power Stadium. Therefore, the Nerazzurri have a decision to make about the 22-year-old's future. Several clubs have already shown an interest in signing Palacios. Olympiakos, Rizaspor, Sassuolo, and Girona are keen. Meanwhile, Avellino have identified the Argentine as a potential target. They are looking to strengthen their squad after winning promotion to Serie B. However, there would be a couple obstacles. Firstly, Palacios is unlikely to want to drop down to the second division. And secondly. Inter would want to sell the defender permanently, whereas Avellino could only afford a loan.
