Poundland reveals major change for Perk scheme members

Customers who use the 'Poundland Perk' app will now collect 'Perk points' to be able to be spent in store.
These points can then be converted into vouchers for online or in-store usage when shoppers have spent enough to hit at least 5,000 points.
It's a change from the previous setup which had member-only discounts off hundreds of items in store.
In an email sent to Perk members from the Poundland team yesterday (May 23), it read: 'We've listened to your feedback and from May 21, 2025, the app will now be changing to points and prizes.
'That means we'll be offering all customers our very best pricing on the shelf and online – without having to add Poundland Perks prices found in the app."
Any points earned when shopping will still be totalled up on the app, and individuals will still be able to take part in the weekly competition run by the store.
It said: 'Of course, you can continue to earn points as you shop at Poundland in store and online when you scan your Poundland Perks app at checkout – and you'll still be able to play our weekly Win it Wednesday competition to win points and prizes.

'Once you've accumulated 5,000 points you'll be able to convert those points to a £1 voucher to redeem In-store and online, by turning the toggle on before the 15th of every month.'
Launched in October last year, the Perks app was the value retailer's first rewards scheme and surpassed one million downloads just one month after its launch.
Following a pilot scheme in Scotland, Northern Ireland and on the Isle of Wight, the retailer created the 'convenient' app to help customers save even more in the lead up to Christmas.

Up to 280 locations of popular store chain are facing closure amid bankruptcy

Claire's accessories could be the latest high street casualty after announcing it's considering closing stores across the UK. The fashion accessories store, which claims to have performed more piercings than any other chain, has over 280 stores across the UK. However, the UK chain has incurred losses of £25,000,000 over the past three years alone, prompting the company to hire advisers to find a buyer for its British operations. The company is also considering bankruptcy, according to Sky News, and if the company is sold, it could lead to a number of their UK storefronts closing for good. One industry expert suggested Claire's could see a third of their shops closed, putting hundreds of jobs at risk. Company leaders cited 'general economic conditions' such as inflation, labour supply, currency rates and more, which had affected the shop's costs. In Greater London alone, there are at least 30 branches of the popular shop. The shop also reportedly has a £355,000,000 loan which they have to pay by the end of 2025. If the company moves forward with a sale or bankruptcy, Claire's will join the growing list of shops shuttering their doors across Britain. Metro has contacted Claire's for further information. In June, it was announced fashion retailer River Island was working working with consultants to draw up a way to keep stores going amid tough trading conditions. A 'significant' number of stores, as well as some of the 5,500 staff employed by the firm, could be affected by the move, Sky News reported. Just yesterday, it was announced that more Poundland stores were set to close after the chain was acquired in a rescue deal. Investment firm Gordon Brothers bought the struggling discount shop last last month, with Poundland going into a 'restructuring' process. Poundland confirmed that 68 shops and two warehouses will shutter as part of the plan, subject to a court's approval. The company told Metro that a full list of store closures though it confirmed that the end goal would be reducing the number of Poundland stores from about 800 to 650. More Trending New Look will also be closing down dozens of stores by the end of 2025, with the latest shutting its doors in Scotland earlier this month. Shoppers might enjoy the closing-down sales in the short term, but the move is likely to deal another blow to struggling UK high streets. Another store, in Wales, is due to close in August, bringing the total in the UK this year to 12, with another 26 in Ireland. The fashion giant has been planning to trim its high street presence for some time, but it reportedly increased the number of planned closures after the Autumn budget last year. Poundland chain confirms further store closures in a blow to shoppers

Yet more Poundland stores are about to close after the chain was acquired for £1 in a rescue deal. Investment firm Gordon Brothers bought the struggling discount shop last last month, with Poundland going into a 'restructuring' process. Poundland confirmed today that 68 shops and two warehouses will shutter as part of the plan, subject to a court's approval. The company told Metro that a full list of store closures though it confirmed that the end goal would be reducing the number of Poundland stores from about 800 to 650. Poundland will also scale back its frozen food lines but also add more women's clothing and seasonal items, the business news website said. In the latest blow for shoppers the shop's branch in Colchester, Essex, closed last week, with two more branches in Dudley and Telford shutting on July 18 and 19. The bargain chain's 16,000 staff face an uncertain future as it negotiates with landlords to reduce rents amid tough trading conditions. In the six months leading up to March, Poundland reported a 6.5% slump in revenue to £830million. More Trending 'It's sincerely regrettable that this plan includes the closure of stores and distribution centres, but it's necessary if we're to achieve our goal of securing the future of thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores. 'It goes without saying that if our plans are approved, we will do all we can to support colleagues who will be directly affected by the changes.' Stephan Borchert, Pepco Group chief executive, said: 'This transaction will strongly support our accelerated value creation programme by simplifying the group and focusing on our successful Pepco business.' Poundland launches huge ‘everything must go' closing down sale as another store to shut – full list of 22 sites closing

POUNDLAND has launched a closing down sale as it prepares to shut another branch. The retailer will close another store in St Marks Place, Newark. 1 Locals were shocked to see closing down posters in the windows of its branch in St Marks, Place in Newark. The store has launched a closing down sale, in efforts to shift stock before it closes, according to a report in The Newark Advertiser. It is one of many closures announced by the troubled retail brand in recent weeks. Poundland is preparing to pulling down the shutters on a store in Merry Hill Shopping Centre, Dudley, on July 18. The bargain chain is also due to shut a branch in Telford on July 19. Meanwhile, a second in Cowes on the Isle of Wight and a third in Newquay gear up to close on July 30 and August 1, respectively. Poundland has already closed 17 stores across the UK since March last year, including in Macclesfield, Maidenhead and Flint. A total of 21 stores will shut once the remaining closures have taken place: Connswater Shopping Centre, Belfast – closed March 2024 Macclesfield – closed August, 2024 Maidenhead – closed October, 2024 Sutton Coldfield – closed October, 2024 Clapham Junction Station, London – closed May 2 Belle Vale Shopping Centre, Liverpool – closed May 6 St George's Centre, Gravesend – closed May 8 Southwark Park Road – closed May 14 Copdock Mill Interchange, Ipswich – closed May 20 Brackla, Wales – closed May 24 Chiswick High Road – closed May 28 Filton Abbeywood – closed May 31 Surrey Quays – closed June 11 Barrow Dalton Road - closed June 12 Union Gate, Bristol - closed June 20 Flint - closed June 21 Colchester - closed St Marks Place Newark - closing Telford - closing July 19 Newquay - closing on July 30 Cowes, Isle of Wight – closing July 30 Newquay - August 1 Shoppers have picked up big bargain in previous closing down sales announced by the firm. Poundland to be sold for JUST £1 as frontrunner for shock takeover is revealed after wave of store closures Ahead of its branch in Barrow closing, shoppers managed to pick up a garlic masher for 12p and a wine and beer glasses for 25p a pop. They also picked up a USB charger for 37p. Poundland is set to close up to 68 stores with a further 150 at risk of closure, separate to the shops mentioned above. The store expects its portfolio to reduce to around 650-700 stores compared to circa 800 sites it operates today. Last month, the chain was sold to investment firm Gordon Brothers for £1. The former owners of Laura Ashley have proposed the following changes: Getting rid of frozen food products at all stores where they're currently sold Reducing the number of chilled food items sold Closing its frozen and digital distribution centre in Darton, South Yorkshire, later this year Closing its national distribution centre in Bilston, West Midlands, in early 2026 No longer selling products on its website Providing more womenswear and seasonal ranges The retail chain had previously been owned by Polish company Pepco Group since 2016. But the group put Poundland up for auction in March as it looked to offload the brand. RETAIL PAIN IN 2025 The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion. Research by the British Chambers of Commerce shows that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by early April. A survey of more than 4,800 firms found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024. Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure. The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year. It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year. Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025." Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector. "By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer's household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020."
