Chicago Blackhawks updates: Jared Nightingale hired in Rockford — and Mark Eaton returns to front office
Nightingale takes over for interim coach Mark Eaton, who filled in as a first-time coach when the Hawks promoted Anders Sörensen to interim coach in Chicago on Dec. 5 after firing Luke Richardson.
Nightingale, 42, was an assistant coach in Rockford from 2021-2024 (under Derek King, and then Sörensen) before serving as head coach of the ECHL South Carolina Stingrays last season, his first season as a bench boss.
The Stingrays finished as regular-season champions at 52-15-5, but lost in the first round of the Kelly Cup playoffs. However, Nightingale was named ECHL coach of the year and also served as director of hockey operations for the Stingrays, who set franchise records in points (109) and wins (52).
'A natural leader, Jared's confidence and direction behind the bench has produced a coaching style that is perfectly suited to help develop and advance our young prospects in Rockford,' Hawks general manager Kyle Davidson said in a statement. 'His familiarity with the organization and our players is an incomparable asset and we're excited to see Jared succeed in this role moving forward.'
Nightingale also served as an assistant coach for the U.S. U17 team in 2018-19 that featured IceHogs prospects Drew Commesso and Landon Slaggert, and on the Juniors roster that had Hawks goalie Spencer Knight and defenseman Alex Vlasic. He worked under then-head coach Seth Appert, a longtime colleague of new Hawks coach Jeff Blashill.
Blashill was named the Hawks' 42nd head coach this month, and while he has kept on some staffers, he's shaken up the rest of the coaching tree:
Despite his one-year absence from the organization, Nightingale will likely be reunited with some top prospects who may spend at least some of next season in Rockford, including defensemen Nolan Allan and Ethan Del Mastro and forward Colton Dach.

Hawks Rumored to Reunite With Former All-Star Center: Insider
Hawks Rumored to Reunite With Former All-Star Center: Insider originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Atlanta Hawks aren't done with their summer transactions. After acquiring All-Star big man Kristaps Porzingis from the Boston Celtics, the Hawks have been linked to pursue a veteran free agent center. The team is making moves to give star guard Trae Young and the young core a chance to return to the playoffs. Advertisement The Hawks have missed the playoffs for the second straight year. The last time Atlanta was in the postseason was in 2023. They were eliminated in the first round by the Boston Celtics. Since then, the Hawks have tried to return to the postseason. However, the roster they've had over the past two seasons aren't competitive. This time, they have a chance to strengthen their frontcourt by potentially reuniting with Al Horford. Atlanta Hawks forward Jalen Johnson drives to the basket while Boston Celtics center Al Horford defends. Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports According to ESPN's Marc Spears, the Hawks are among the teams interested in the free agent center. Horford has yet to sign with a team and is also considering retiring from basketball. Spears also reported that the five-time All-Star was supposed to sign a deal with the Golden State Warriors last week. However, a deal did not happen. Advertisement 'Golden State, obviously, expected him to sign last week. He didn't,' the insider said. 'Lakers, Milwaukee, and Atlanta, I believe, are also interested in a nearly 40-year-old guy who also has retirement on the table. Spears revealed that Horford spends his summers in Boston and Atlanta, which is where his family is. The Hawks could have an advantage to sign him since it will keep the Dominican big man close to his wife and kids. 'He's still considering retiring; he's not in any hurry. He's got a sixth kid coming on the way, he lives in Atlanta and Boston in the offseason. But I'm hearing that whether it's Golden State and to a lesser extent the Lakers, being away from the family that far isn't going to be in that decision.' Advertisement Horford has history in Atlanta, as he was drafted by the franchise in 2007 with the third pick. He spent most of his prime years with the Hawks. In the nine years he was a part of the organization, the 6-foot-9 center averaged 14.3 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists. The former Florida star was a four-time All-Star and a one-time All-NBA player with the Hawks. Ending his career with the team that took a chance on him would be a perfect way. Chicago Blackhawks will open the NHL season on the road vs. the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers
The Chicago Blackhawks will go on the road to play the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers as part of the NHL's season-opening tripleheader Oct. 7. The game will kick off ESPN's slate at 4 p.m., with the New York Rangers hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins at 7 and the Los Angeles Kings hosting the Colorado Avalanche at 9:30. The full NHL schedule will be announced at noon Wednesday on NHL Network. The Hawks might be starting to feel like the visitors at a big homecoming game. It will be the fourth time in the last six seasons they've been the side note in the host team's celebratory opener — either a championship banner raising or an expansion team's first game. Another recent opener pitted Hawks rookie Connor Bedard, in his NHL debut, against his idol, Sidney Crosby, and the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of another tripleheader. The Hawks' 4-2 upset on Oct. 10, 2023, in front of 18,411 at PPG Paints Arena drew 1.43 million viewers, a regular-season record for ESPN (excluding Winter Classics). The Hawks will open on the road for an eighth consecutive season, dating to Oct. 4, 2019, in Prague against the Philadelphia Flyers as part of the NHL Global Series. The Hawks lost that game 4-3 in front of 17,463 at O2 Arena.
