Coach That Lincoln Riley Fired Lands New Role originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Lincoln Riley delivered one stunning change during the spring by firing Bennie Wylie. The USC head coach and the strength and conditioning coordinator held a lengthy relationship -- including Wylie becoming one of Riley's first USC hires in 2022.

Wylie has since found a new role. Although it's a non-college football one.
Wylie is back in the state of Texas. This time he's taking over the strength department for Huntsville High School, with Football Scoop reporting the move.
He'll be working with a school that boasts an enrollment of approximately 1,900 students. He's also going to be close to a school he knows quite well.

Huntsville High is located nine minutes driving distance from Sam Houston State University. SHS is Wylie's alma mater -- where he played from 1994 to 1997.
Wylie, though, will be taking a step back from college and working with younger prospects.

He joined the University of Texas in 2011 as the Longhorns' strength and conditioning coach. Mack Brown helped facilitate his hire to the staff. But before that he held stints with the University of Tennessee and Texas Tech University -- serving as head strength and conditioning coach.
Wylie even delivered a brief NFL run. He was named assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Dallas Cowboys from 1999 to 2002. His alma mater handed him his first S&C role in 1998 on an interim basis.
He first linked with Riley in 2018 while at the University of Oklahoma. Wylie joined a staff that won three Big 12 titles in '18, 2019 and 2020. He later joined the USC staff in Dec. 2021 after Riley's agreement to coach the Trojans.
Riley pulled the stunner by firing Wylie in May -- following the completion of spring practice.

Cowboys lineman projected for $76 million deal to run numbers up if they wait too long

The Dallas Cowboys haven't struck gold in the first round since 2022. While it's still a bit early to call DT Mazi Smith a bust and way too early to say such things about Tyler Guyton, the club hasn't nailed a pick out the box since drafting Tyler Smith. The club had a clear plan for the young lineman, and even when that went up in smoke due to an injury to his linemate, Smith proved to be everything the team had imagined, and is already revered as one of the NFL's best lineman. Smith was drafted to be an eventual replacement for Tyron Smith at left tackle, but the club intended on him playing guard until the elder Smith retired. A major injury towards the end of 2022 training camp moved Tyler Smith outside to tackle a year early, and he acquitted himself very well there. He moved back inside for 2023, earning All-Pro honors in his second year. Despite moving back outside for a game and a half, the staff seems committed to allowing him to thrive on the inside for now and the immediate future. Rundown Position: Offensive Guard Age: 24 Height: 6-foot-6 Weight: 332 pounds Hometown: Ft. Worth, TX High School: North Crowley College: Tulsa (Film Study Video) Draft: 2022 First-round pick (No. 24 Overall) Acquired: 2022 Draft Contract: Four-year contract (2022), $13.4 million 2025 Base Salary: $2.5 million | Cap Hit: $4.3 million Career Earnings: $4.3 million (per Over TheCap) Profile Dallas loved what Smith did on the interior so much, they drafted Guyton in the first round in 2024 to man the outside after saying goodbye to Tyron Smith in free agency. And despite Guyton's clear struggles, the road is paved for him to get another season there. It will always exist in the back of everyone's mind that Smith is more than a serviceable player on the outside, and until Guyton establishes himself as a plus starter, the option will always exist for Smith to be pushed back outside. And perhaps the front office, while not trying to undercut Guyton's confidence, prepared for that possibility. The team added four players capable of starting at guard this offseason in ERFA Brock Hoffman, veteran FA Saahdiq Charles, veteran OT/OG Hakeem Adeniji and drafting Tyler Booker in the first round. Booker will start at right guard unless something goes wrong, but all are capable of playing left guard if the best move for Dallas is to push Tyler Smith back outside to left tackle. In addition, Smith is on his way to a well-deserved new contract. The Cowboys have a fifth-year option invoked that will keep Smith with the team in 2026 for $21.2 million, but he's eligible for a contract extension now, and the club may want to buck their trend and pay him now instead of drawing things out. Spotrac projects him as being worth a four-year, $76 million extension, or $19.1 per season now, and that price tag will only increase with another Pro Bowl or All-Pro season. "It's almost more normal to break through that way rather than come in as LeBron James or Cooper Flagg" - Steve Nash warns Flagg after his draft

"It's almost more normal to break through that way rather than come in as LeBron James or Cooper Flagg" - Steve Nash warns Flagg after his draft originally appeared on Basketball Network. If we take a look at the stars that have marked the last decade of basketball in the league, we arrive at a very interesting conclusion that got Steve Nash's and LeBron James' attention and it's something Cooper Flagg should be aware of it as well. Advertisement The last 10 MVP award winners are, in order: Stephen Curry (7th pick in the first round), Russell Westbrook (4th pick in the first round), James Harden (3rd pick in the first round), followed by Giannis Antetokounmpo twice (15th pick in the first round), Nikola Jokic three times (41st pick in the second round), Joel Embiid (1st pick of the second round) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (11th pick in the first round). Franchise players are more and more often coming out of nowhere, and usually, they are not expected to reach such heights. James and Nash discussed this topic after the draft, where Cooper Flagg was already predicted as the future star of the NBA after being picked number one overall by the Dallas Mavericks. "When you're selected with the first pick, the expectations are automatically put on you. It doesn't matter if they're right or wrong," LeBron said on the "Mind the Game" podcast. "Cooper Flagg is the same age I was when I started. The expectations are such that you place an 18-year-old out there and he's supposed to be the best right away. I think that's unfair, but also something that kids like Cooper and I can use as motivation," he continued. Second-youngest number-one draft pick in league history Flagg is actually the second-youngest number one draft pick in league history. Had he been just 11 days younger, he wouldn't have even been eligible to enter this draft, while King James was eight days younger than Flagg is now when he was selected. Long before their draft selections, a narrative had already begun to form around the idea that they would be the next face of the league. Advertisement Meanwhile, in the NBA, the trend of players becoming stars even though they're lower draft picks continue more and more, as we mentioned earlier in the text and who go on to lead their teams all the way to championships. Bron and Nash, in their conversation, specifically touched on Kawhi Leonard as a great example. "We already mentioned Kawhi. We don't know if Kawhi would've become what he is without the habits he developed with the Spurs. He would obviously be great, but he had the time to develop his skills, to be around Tony, Manu, Timmy and Pop," James said. Related: Michael Jordan shows off his $115 million luxurious superyacht in Croatia Nash pointed out the biggest problem Nash followed up by pointing out that there are far more players who break through from the background than those who live up to expectations like James. Advertisement "There are way more of those kinds of stories than ones like yours. I don't remember Kawhi, Giannis or Jokic being on a lot of radars. The league is filled with players of that profile who somehow made it through an alternate path," he stated. "It's almost more normal to break through that way, rather than come in as LeBron James or Cooper Flagg," Nash concluded. The latest example of a player who hasn't lived up to those expectations - at least so far - is Zion Williamson. Even though he's still young enough and has shown on the court that he can play at the highest level, some time has passed and it's fair to say that he definitely hasn't fulfilled that potential yet, mostly due to injuries. When we compare that path with the one taken by Jokic or Kawhi, who emerged out of nowhere and progressed without the pressure of expectations, the point of the conversation between James and Nash becomes clear. Cooper Flagg carries a huge burden on his shoulders and no one can say for sure how he'll handle that pressure. Michael Irvin Admits To Changing Opinion of Cowboys' Brian Schottenheimer

Michael Irvin Admits To Changing Opinion of Cowboys' Brian Schottenheimer originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - It's no secret that Dallas Cowboys' legend Michael Irvin wasn't a big fan of former head coach Mike McCarthy. And he wasn't exactly thrilled at the promotion of Brian Schottenheimer, either. Advertisement But as the offseason has gone along, his tune has drastically changed about Schottenheimer. The Hall-of-Fame receiver has been giddy recently, gloating about his franchise's new-found "unity" and predicting the Cowboys will "surprise everybody" this season. The reason for Irvin's optimism? Well, primarily, he's a happy dude. But also: Scchottenheimer. 'I love what coach Schottenheimer is trying to do," Irvin said on his YouTube channel. "I came down hard about this on this decision (to hire him), but I must admit there are some things that are winning me over. Like I told you about him, understanding how important it is to have the right culture and to set the right tone.' Advertisement For an example, Irvin went a minicamp practice earlier this month wearing a lanyard around his neck that reap, "VIP: Legends Community." It was former Irvin teammate and co-Ring of Honor member Emmitt Smith last season who bemoaned the Cowboys' lack of pride on and off the field. 'Coach Schottenheimer put all the legends that were there on the big board, and then called out their names," Irvin said. "He said to the players, 'This is what we're a part of. This is what they built. This very building that we're in, they built'. "He said, 'I want you guys to spend as much time as you can with them, to get whatever you can from them, so we can hold up and honor and do what they've done.' And I was like … okay, that's a good start, because he's connecting.' Advertisement It may not translate into a single victory on the field, but at least Schottenheimer is winning over fans and former critics.
