Chargers great named one of best draft values of millennium

USA Today20 hours ago
The Chargers have hit on a handful of players in the first round over the years. But they've also found some gems beyond Round 1, including safety Eric Weddle.
NFL Media's Eric Edholm went position by position and identified the best NFL draft values of the millennium, and sided with the highest-achieving lower selections.
Weddle, who was selected in the second round of the 2007 NFL draft (No. 37 overall), checked in at No. 3, behind Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu and ahead of Adrian Wilson and Kam Chancellor.
Weddle quickly became one of the league's best center fielders, able to impact the game in coverage and as an open-field tackler, earning two first-team and three second-team All-Pro honors in a dominant five-season span (2010-14) in San Diego. He was a tough, smart and reliable player for nearly a decade with the Chargers, later adding three Pro Bowl invitations with the Ravens. Weddle also came out of retirement to help the Rams win Super Bowl LVI, in spite of being out of the game for nearly two full years before his return.
Edholm mentioned he was weighing Weddle against another early second-rounder, Budda Baker, who was taken one spot earlier 10 years later, in the 2017 NFL draft. While Baker has tallied more Pro Bowl invitations than Weddle, his overall body of work with the team that drafted him was just a bit stronger on the whole than what Baker has done in eight seasons for the Cardinals.
During his time with the Chargers, his best ability might've been his availability, playing in 137 games and starting 122 of them. A highly productive player in the blue and gold, Weddle amassed 847 tackles, 19 interceptions, and four defensive touchdowns en route to earning three Pro Bowl selections and two First-Team All-Pro selections.
After nine seasons with the Bolts, Weddle went on to spend three seasons with the Ravens (2016-18). The San Diego native then played with the Rams in two separate stints, with the first being in 2019 and the other being in 2021, in which he returned from retirement to play in the 2021 postseason, helping out in L.A.'s Super Bowl win.

Arizona Cardinals to face 6 of NFL's top 10 RBs in 2025

Nearly half of the Cardinals' games in 2025 will be against some of the league's best running backs. Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner came just short of the list of the top 10 running backs in the NFL, according to NFL coaches, scouts and executives. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler did the legwork and research. While the Conner did receive honorable mention, the Cardinals will face many of the top backs in the league. They will not face the top three of the list, but will face a total of six of the 10 and also one of the five who received honorable mention. Top-10 RBs the Cardinals will face in 2025 The Cardinals were 20th in rushing defense last season but 25th in yards per attempt, allowing 4.6 yards per carry. It was a reason why they were dead last plays allowed per drive and second-to-last in time allowed per drive. But with a beefed up defensive line and edge presence, their run defense should be better. Will that be enough to slow this lineup of opposing backs? That is one thing to watch this season. Advertisement "Did you see the numbers they did?" Bradshaw asked. "The largest Super Bowl in history. 126 million people. There's 330 million people in America. "That is a ton. The Fox pregame show averaged 28 million for five hours. Who in the world is gonna sit around and watch that mess for five hours?" 28 million," Bradshaw continued. "You know how much money they made? God. More money than plumbers. I can assure that. 28 million. "And I guarantee you, if I go in there and ask for a raise, 'Well, we don't have running a little tight. Well, you just paid Tom Brady $37 million a year. I'll take it. I did some bad deals, that's what it was," the legendary Steelers QB Bradshaw added. Steelers trade pitch adds $68 million superstar receiver for Aaron Rodgers

The Pittsburgh Steelers need to acquire another wide receiver before the 2025 NFL season, as the team has yet to fill the void left by George Pickens, who was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in May. The free agent market is filled with veteran talent that can help Pittsburgh. However, Last Word on Sports' Liam Rebellato believes the Steelers should try to trade for disgruntled Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin to pair with DK Metcalf. Advertisement "The Steelers have been aggressive this offseason and still lack a clear No. 2 receiver behind DK Metcalf. McLaurin's proven production and steady presence could be exactly what Pittsburgh needs to round out its receiving group," Rebellato wrote. McLaurin is entering the final year of his deal and is seeking an extension from the Commanders. However, negotiations haven't been going well, which caused the superstar receiver to skip mandatory minicamp in June. If Washington can't agree on a long-term deal with McLaurin, they could look to trade him. The Steelers would be a dream landing spot for the 29-year-old receiver, as McLaurin would form a dynamic duo with Metcalf and give quarterback Aaron Rodgers another electric receiving threat on the perimeter. Trading for McLaurin will likely cost a Day 1 or high Day 2 pick, and he also needs a contract extension. Pittsburgh, who just made Metcalf the fourth-highest paid receiver in football this offseason, may not have the money to pay another receiver a top-of-the-market salary, but general manager Omar Khan should still look into a trade for McLaurin. Advertisement Though McLaurin would be an exhilarating addition to Arthur Smith's offense, the Commanders would be foolish to move on from the Ohio State product. McLaurin formed a formidable connection with quarterback Jayden Daniels last season, and it would be criminal if Washington broke up that duo after just one year.
