Paul Skenes to start 2nd straight All-Star Game for NL and Tarik Skubal to open for AL
Major League Baseball made the announcement Saturday night.
Skenes will become the first pitcher to start consecutive All-Star Games since Washington's Max Scherzer and Boston's Chris Sale in 2017 and '18. Sale started three in a row beginning in 2016.
Skenes and Skubal are 1-2 in average four-seam fastball velocity among those with 1,500 or more pitches this season, Skenes at 98.2 mph and Skubal at 97.6 mph, according to MLB Statcast.
Skenes worked around Juan Soto's walk in a scoreless first at Arlington, Texas, last year, throwing at up to 100.1 mph. He made the start after just 11 major league appearances, the fewest for an All-Star.
Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski, with five appearances, could take over that mark Tuesday if he pitches.
Skubal pitched a perfect second inning in his first All-Star appearance last year, following Baltimore's Corbin Burnes to the mound.
A 23-year-old right-hander, Skenes is 4-8 despite a major league-best 2.01 ERA for the Pirates, who are last in the NL Central. The 2024 NL Rookie of the Year has 131 strikeouts and 30 walks in 131 innings.
Skubal, a 28-year-old left-hander, is the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. He is 10-3 with a 2.23 ERA, striking out 153 and walking 16 in 121 innings.

Irish is the latest Tiger to be taken in the first round of the MLB draft, and the first since Tanner Burns was taken No. 36 overall in 2020. It was long suspected that Auburn iron man Ike Irish would be selected in the first round of the 2025 MLB draft. Sunday, those suspicions were realized as the Baltimore Orioles selected Irish with the No. 19 overall pick in Sunday's draft, which is taking place at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia, site of the 2025 MLB All-Star Game. Irish's ability to attack opposing pitching, as well as his versatility in the field, made him attractive to Major League Baseball franchises. In three season's at Auburn, Irish hit 39 home runs and sent 167 runs home. He set many personal records last season as a junior by hitting 19 home runs, logging 78 hits, and hitting .364. He played a variety of positions during his time at Auburn, including right field, left field, first base, and catcher. He will likely be used as a catcher in the Orioles' organization should he elect to turn pro. Irish becomes the 10th first-round selection that Auburn has produced. By being selected No. 19 overall, Irish joins elite company with the likes of Gregg Olson, Frank Thomas, Gabe Gross, Casey Mize, and Tanner Burns. He becomes the first Tiger taken in the first round since Burns was selected by the Cleveland Guardians at No. 36 overall in 2020, and is the 10th Tiger to be selected by the Baltimore Orioles, the first since Chase Allsup was taken by the O's in the fourth round of last year's draft. The MLB draft continues into Monday. Rounds 1-3 will take place Sunday while rounds 4-20 will occur Monday. As the Yankee manager is wont to note — and did again Sunday — 'all the hopes and dreams are right there and still exist for us.' Indeed. The Yankees are not the Rockies or White Sox. They have enough talent in a watered-down American League that winning a second straight pennant is no pipe dream. It also is not happening if the Yankees of the past seven weeks linger. The Yankees, after all, are not judged against the Rockies and White Sox. They are judged against their history, payroll and expectations. And how they have performed, since late May generally and mid-June specifically, will make reaching the playoffs challenging, regardless of how diminished the league might be. Because the left side of their infield is a disaster. Their rotation and homer-challenged bullpen are both depth challenged. Their homer-dependent offense can score 10 or zero, which is how the Yanks could have the majors' second-best run differential and be so underperforming it.

Freddie Freeman's bloop single in 11th starts winning rally as Dodgers beat Giants 5-2
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Freddie Freeman blooped a single into shallow right-center with two outs in the 11th inning to score James Outman for the go-ahead run, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 on Sunday for a winning series, one day after snapping a season-worst, seven-game losing streak. Spencer Bivens (2-3) intentionally walked Shohei Ohtani to start the 11th and retired Mookie Betts and Will Smith before Freeman delivered with a ball that dropped between three Giants. Teoscar Hernández then beat out an infield single for an insurance run and Andy Pages followed with an RBI single. Ben Casparius (7-3) got Willy Adames to ground out ending the 10th, then pitched a perfect 11th for the win. Pinch-hitter Luis Matos hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth after Matt Chapman's one-out single started the rally against Tanner Scott, who blew his seventh save in 26 opportunities. Miguel Rojas homered and Freeman had an early RBI double that had Los Angeles ahead until the ninth. Dodgers starter and first-time All-Star Yoshinobu Yamamoto struck out seven over seven innings and allowed three hits. The defending World Series champion Dodgers (58-39) entered the All-Star break atop the NL West after finishing the first half with nine straight games against clubs with winning records.
