Former Colorado running backs coach lands job with a nearby college program
Colorado overhauled some of their coaching staff this offseason, most notably replacing Gary Harrell with Marshall Faulk as the new running backs coach.
Harrell recently found a new job and is heading north from Boulder to join the Wyoming Cowboys in the same role.
In 2022, Harrell followed Deion Sanders from Jackson State to Colorado. The running game under Harrell never seemed to get going in either of his two seasons, averaging only 2.5 yards per carry last year and a 2.3 average in 2023.
The rushing attack's failures weren't all on Harrell, as Colorado focused heavily on making the receiving game the offense's focal point. With players like Travis Hunter, LaJohntay Wester, and Jimmy Horn Jr., the direction of the offense was understandable, but it did make Colorado one-dimensional at times.
Harrell joins head coach Jay Sawvel's staff looking to turn around a Cowboys program that went 3-9 last season. Perhaps the style of Wyoming's offense is more suitable to Harrell's role, as they ran the ball 460 times last season for 1,654 yards.
Harrell was Howard's head coach from 2011 to 2016. In 2012, the D.C. Touchdown Club honored Harrell as the Local College Coach of the Year. During his time at Howard, he finished with a 20-36 overall record, including a 7-4 mark in 2012.
The Wyoming Cowboys and Harrell will be back in Boulder this season. On Sept. 20, they will take on the Buffaloes in a matchup of the border rivals.

Former Jackson State star signs with Dallas Cowboys
After an up-and-down journey in the NFL, former Jackson State star and Detroit Lions edge rusher James Houston has signed with the Dallas Cowboys, according to multiple reports. Houston, a 2022 sixth-round pick out of Jackson State, began his career on the Lions' practice squad. He made an immediate impact after being activated, debuting on Thanksgiving Day with a two-sack performance against the Buffalo Bills. He went on to tally eight sacks in just seven games, quickly becoming one of the league's most surprising breakout rookies. Despite that early success, Houston struggled to carve out a consistent role. In the 2023 offseason, Detroit experimented with him at SAM linebacker, but the fit didn't stick. His momentum took another hit when he fractured his ankle while covering a punt in Week 2 against Seattle, sidelining him for most of the season. He returned just in time for the NFC Championship game. In 2024, the Lions gave Houston another opportunity as a traditional defensive end. However, he began the season as a healthy scratch. An injury to star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson opened the door for Houston to get back on the field, but he was ultimately waived on November 26. Now, Houston gets a fresh start with Dallas, a team actively building depth behind Micah Parsons. His mix of speed and burst off the edge makes him a compelling low-risk, high-reward signing for the Cowboys. At Jackson State University, James Houston was a dominant force on defense. In his lone season (2021), he recorded 70 total tackles, 24.5 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, 7 forced fumbles, and 1 interception, helping lead JSU to an SWAC Championship and earning FCS All-American honors. At 25 years old, James Houston has a chance to revive his career and contribute to one of the NFC's top contenders, the Dallas Cowboys. Tim Howard: USMNT's 'hard truths' must be faced for a World Cup run
Tim Howard had just completed a comeback. When the legendary United States men's national team goalkeeper recently spoke to The Post, he was wrapping up an appearance on behalf of Airbnb, which has a three-year partnership with FIFA to support accommodations around the recently completed Club World Cup, next summer's World Cup in North America and the 2027 Women's World Cup. Howard — the 46-year-old New Jersey native who tops goalies with 121 career appearances for the USMNT and who played professionally for the likes of Manchester United and Everton — led a training session 'experience' for select participants, which ended with instruction on penalty shootouts. 'It was the first time since I retired that I actually got in goal and dove around,' Howard said. 'I tried. I was actually OK.'
