‘Jurassic World Rebirth': Instant Oscar odds

Yahoo2 days ago
When Jurassic Park opened in 1993, it marked a historic leap for visual effects and was rewarded as such at the Academy Awards the following years, where it won three Oscars including one for Best Visual Effects.
Thirty-two years later, visual effects and the film franchise that Jurassic Park spawned look quite different. The six movies that followed Park racked up a total one nomination and zero wins.

But could the relatively stripped-down Jurassic World Rebirth be the movie that breaks the Ice Age of a cold streak that's been around since 1997's The Lost World: Jurassic Park? The reviews certainly lower expectations for any surprise above-the-line noms, but there are a few categories where the franchise could show signs of life.
It's the category where the series has been the strongest, accounting for half of its four total nominations. If Rebirth has any hope of an Oscar nomination, this would be it. Putting dinosaurs onto the big screen might not be a new trick, but it's one that certainly draws a lot of attention to itself — like Sam Neill waving around a flare, saying "Hey! Nominate me!"
For Alexadre Desplat's work on Rebirth to qualify for Oscar contention, at least 80 percent of the score would need to be new music. That's the standard the Academy places on sequels and franchise films hoping to qualify for Best Score. Since Rebirth only wheels out the iconic John Williams theme in a handful of key moments, it's certainly possible that the two-time winner and 11-time nominee will be eligible, but there's a high bar to clear.
The two-time nominee behind the photography for Gladiator and The Phantom of the Opera, John Mathieson, shot Rebirth for director Gareth Edwards and does lend some moody weight to the film, especially in the flare-lit night sequences.
