Snubbed By Oscars, ‘Will & Harper,' ‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story' Score Multiple Emmy Nominations

Will & Harper and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story missed out on Oscar nominations, but they got their due this morning from Television Academy voters. Will & Harper, the story of Will Ferrell and his friend Harper Steele who embarked on a road trip after Harper came out as trans, earned five nominations, tied for the most in the nonfiction categories. The Netflix documentary, directed by Josh Greenbaum, will compete in the premier category of Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special where it will go up against Deaf President Now!, Martha, Pee-wee As Himself, and Sly Lives! (Aka The Burden Of Black Genius). Scroll for the full list of documentary category nominations. More from Deadline Primetime Emmy Nominations: The Complete List Emmys: Catherine O'Hara & Julianne Nicholson Score Double Acting Nominations 'The Daily Show' Nearly Doubles Its Own Emmy Record Kristen Wiig, overlooked for an Oscar nomination for her song from Will & Harper, made up for that with an Emmy nomination for 'Will and Harper Go West.' She shares co-writing credit on that song with Greenbaum and Sean Douglas, who also earned nominations. Along with Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, Will & Harper earned nominations for its cinematography, Josh Greenbaum's directing, and picture editing. 'I'm very proud of it. I mean, I've been proud of this film since it got created, and I'm happy that this will bring it maybe even a bigger audience,' Harper Steele told Deadline this morning, acknowledging a bit of a residual sting from the Oscar oversight – Will & Harper made the shortlist, but fell short of an Academy Award nomination. 'I was disappointed with the Oscar snub, but yeah, who knows the inner workings of the doc branch of the Oscars. I don't, but I'm happy to see that people still think highly of the film.' Steele, who served as head writer at Saturday Night Live, where she formed bonds with Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig and other SNL talents, shared her thoughts on Wiig being recognized for her tender and amusing song from Will & Harper. '[I'm] very happy Kristen was involved in this project. I have a special place in my heart for her,' Steele said. Noting Wiig's songwriting ability, she added, 'She's unsurprisingly talented at this point.' Steele also saluted Greenbaum for earning recognition for his direction. 'You have to be happy for all the blood and sweat that went into it, that basically Will and I had nothing to do with,' she noted. 'We just drove.' Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, an in-depth look at the late Superman star, earned an impressive four Emmy nominations, including recognition for directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui. The film, from HBO Max and DC Studios, also earned recognition for writing, picture editing, and Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special (Original Dramatic Score). The Super/Man Emmy love comes as another actor dons the red cape and boots – David Corenswet, starring in the James Gunn-directed Superman, which is off to a flying start at the box office ($220m worldwide and climbing). Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story not only examines the actor's iconic take on Clark Kent and the Man of Steel, but on his activism on behalf of people with disabilities after he became paralyzed in a horse-riding accident. The documentary features his children, Matthew, Alexandra, and Will. For timeliness, Will & Harper could hardly be more newsworthy. Donald Trump ran for a second term as president in part on stigmatizing trans and nonbinary people (one of his ad's declared 'Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you'). In an executive order he issued shortly after taking office again, Trump barked, 'Medical professionals are maiming and sterilizing a growing number of impressionable children under the radical and false claim that adults can change a child's sex.' And on June 18, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a Tennessee law that restricted trans minors' access to medical treatments like puberty blockers and hormone therapy. The immediacy of Will & Harper isn't lost on Steele. 'This is why I want the film to be out there and promoted in any possible way. I think there's a misunderstanding around trans people in general, but that's probably due to fear mongering more than people's understanding or people's knowledge of trans people,' Steele observed. 'And the fear mongering is deep and has been long lasting even before the Trump administration. I don't know what this film can actually do, but in some small way, I hope it adds to the conversation that allows people to understand that there is nothing to fear with trans people. Nothing at all.' Final Emmy voting takes place from August 18-27. The documentary category winners will be revealed at the Creative Arts Emmys on September 6 and 7 (highlights will air Sept. 13 on FXX). The main Primetime Emmy ceremony will be held Sept. 14, airing on CBS and Paramount+. ‘Jurassic World Rebirth': Instant Oscar odds

When Jurassic Park opened in 1993, it marked a historic leap for visual effects and was rewarded as such at the Academy Awards the following years, where it won three Oscars including one for Best Visual Effects. Thirty-two years later, visual effects and the film franchise that Jurassic Park spawned look quite different. The six movies that followed Park racked up a total one nomination and zero wins. More from Gold Derby The controversy over the champion 'Jeopardy' couple: A brief explainer Kesha's 'Period': What critics are saying about the singer's first independent album But could the relatively stripped-down Jurassic World Rebirth be the movie that breaks the Ice Age of a cold streak that's been around since 1997's The Lost World: Jurassic Park? The reviews certainly lower expectations for any surprise above-the-line noms, but there are a few categories where the franchise could show signs of life. It's the category where the series has been the strongest, accounting for half of its four total nominations. If Rebirth has any hope of an Oscar nomination, this would be it. Putting dinosaurs onto the big screen might not be a new trick, but it's one that certainly draws a lot of attention to itself — like Sam Neill waving around a flare, saying "Hey! Nominate me!" For Alexadre Desplat's work on Rebirth to qualify for Oscar contention, at least 80 percent of the score would need to be new music. That's the standard the Academy places on sequels and franchise films hoping to qualify for Best Score. Since Rebirth only wheels out the iconic John Williams theme in a handful of key moments, it's certainly possible that the two-time winner and 11-time nominee will be eligible, but there's a high bar to clear. The two-time nominee behind the photography for Gladiator and The Phantom of the Opera, John Mathieson, shot Rebirth for director Gareth Edwards and does lend some moody weight to the film, especially in the flare-lit night sequences. ‘Biggest mystery' in cinematic history still unanswered

It's been more than 20 years since Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson joined forces for Sofia Coppola's award-winning film Lost in Translation. And yet, in the two decades since the movie's release, the mystery surrounding the pivotal final scene has never been revealed. Today, it remains one of the most endearing movie mysteries of all time. What did Murray's character Bob Harris whisper to Johansson's Charlotte during their final encounter? Only the co-stars, and the filmmaker herself know the answer. In the blockbuster, widely regarded as one of the best travel movies of all time, Murray plays a faded film star who forms a fleeting, intimate bond while in Tokyo with Johansson's character, a disillusioned young Yale graduate and newlywed. The film was a bona fide hit, earning $US118.7 million on a $4 million budget. It received four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Murray. Coppola ultimately took home the award for Best Original Screenplay. And yet, that final whispered line seems to be what viewers still obsess over. Over the years, film critics and movie buffs have attempted to decode the parting thoughts of Murray's character at the end of the pair's whirlwind stay in the Japanese capital. But the answer has never been divulged. The most popular guess, which a YouTuber went viral for back in 2007, is: 'I have to be leaving, but I won't let that come between us, okay?' Other stabs in the dark from cinema detectives include: 'Promise me, that the next thing you do, is go up to that man and tell him the truth.' 'I just want you to know I will never forget this okay?' 'When John [Johansson's character's husband] is ready for his next business trip, go up to that man and tell him the truth, okay?' Others on Reddit have weighed in over the years, with one commenting, 'It's supposed to be ambiguous, a private moment just between the two characters.' Another wrote: 'How people hear anything but 'tell him the truth, okay' at the end of the phrase is bizarre.' Yet another couch critic said: 'You are supposed to decide what he whispers. I don't believe it is scripted.' There were plenty of jokes, too. 'You'll become Black Widow one day,' one person quipped. Director Sofia Coppola herself weighed in on the mystery on the film's 15th anniversary, simply stating: 'That thing Bill whispers to Scarlett was never intended to be anything. 'I was going to figure out later what to say and add it in and then we never did.' Meanwhile, the co-stars have continued to enjoy the prolonged secret over the years, without actually giving it away. The Cadyshak star, now 74, appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show back in March to promote his movie Riff Raff, however wound up reminiscing about the hit romantic comedy-drama from 2003. 'Well there was a girl, she was a teenager back then her name was Scarlett Johansson back then,' the comedian told Barrymore. 'She was only 17 when she made that movie, 17 years old and it was beautiful to make the movie with the two of them [Coppola and Johansson].' The host then hit up Murray about the unforgettable whisper scene. 'I love that you guys had the confidence to leave the film on the note of mystery,' she said. 'Well that was an inspired moment, that happened in the moment, it happened in the moment,' Murray said vaguely, before adding, 'there were three of us that had the same moment.' Despite whispering in Barrymore's ear for added flair, Murray concluded by saying: 'That was a moment of seeing, 'This is going to happen and it's going to be even better because we're never going to know'.' Right … Similarly, Johansson weighed in back in 2023 around the film's 20-year anniversary. 'Oh my god, that sounds pretty profound,' the Avengers star replied when hit up by Yahoo Entertainment about the exact transcript of the infamous moment. 'Probably way more profound than what was actually said!' Listening to the internet's answer a second time, she answered less confidently: 'Maybe? I don't know about that. I give it, like, a B-minus.' Of course, Johansson declined to reveal the exact sentence. And so, the mystery lives on.

New film academy members include Danielle Deadwyler, Ariana Grande, Jason Momoa, Conan O'Brien

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited 534 new members to its organization on Thursday, adding recent Oscar nominees and many more to Hollywood 's most exclusive club. The newest class of Oscar voters includes a number of stars like Dave Bautista, Jason Momoa, Aubrey Plaza, Danielle Deadwyler and Andrew Scott. They, along with filmmakers, below-the-line professionals and executives will bring the film academy's membership total to 11,120, with voting members numbering 10,143. That's the largest membership ever for the academy. Since the #OscarsSoWhite backlash, the film academy has added thousands of members to swell its ranks and diversify its voting body. This year's class is 41% female, 45% from underrepresented communities and 55% from outside the U.S. Those new members will make the entire academy 35% women, 22% from underrepresented communities and 21% international. 'We are thrilled to invite this esteemed class of artists, technologists, and professionals to join the Academy,' said academy chief executive Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang in a statement. 'Through their commitment to filmmaking and to the greater movie industry, these exceptionally talented individuals have made indelible contributions to our global filmmaking community.' Invitations went out to 91 Oscar nominees and 26 winners, including best actress winner Mikey Madison ("Anora") and best supporting actor winner Kieran Culkin ("A Real Pain"). Recent nominees who were invited include Ariana Grande, Jeremy Strong, Sebastian Stan and Monica Barbara. Gints Zilbalodis, the director of best animated film winner 'Flow" will join the animation branch. Other filmmakers set to join the academy include Mike Flanagan ('Doctor Sleep'), Azazel Jacobs ('His Three Daughters'), Brady Corbet ('The Brutalist'), Coraline Fargeat ('The Substance') Jane Schoenbrun ('I Saw the TV Glow'), Halina Reijn ('Babygirl') and Gia Coppola ('The Last Showgirl'). Payal Kapadia ('All We Imagine As Light'), Lena Waithe ('Queen & Slim') and Greg Kwedar and Clint Bentley of 'Sing Sing' were all invited in the writers branch. In the music branch, new members include Brandi Carlile ('Elton John: Never Too Late'), Branford Marsalis ('Rustin') and Youssou N'Dour ('Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love'). The last two emcees to host the Oscars — Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O'Brien — were also invited as members. After a well-reviewed broadcast that drew 19.7 million viewers, O'Brien is returning to host the 2026 Academy Awards on March 15. A few new rules will await the 2025 academy members. For the first time, members will be required to watch all nominated films in each category to be eligible to vote in the final road of Oscar voting. This year, a new award category for casting will be voted on for the upcoming Oscars. The academy has also established a new Oscar for stunt design, but that won't be given out until 2028.

Guess who! Hollywood star featured in 1990s ad before she was famous - as the quirky commercial goes viral

Before red carpets, Oscar nominations and critically acclaimed roles, one of Australia's biggest Hollywood stars was just another young actor trying to make a buck. And one newly unearthed ad from the early 1990s proves exactly that. The now-famous performer was barely recognisable in this quirky commercial for Continental's 'MicroChef Pasta for One' range, which first aired in 1992. Wearing a hot pink blazer over a red turtleneck, the fresh-faced actress appears bored senseless in a geography classroom surrounded by globes and maps, before reluctantly presenting a sad-looking sandwich to the camera. In the next shot, she perks up while holding up the microwave-ready pasta packet with delight, as a narrator sings the praises of the new solo-friendly snack. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The brief ad served up a healthy dose of '90s nostalgia with its punchy colours, cheesy music and classic Australian humour. But it's the then-unknown actress who steals the show with her expressive performance. The star would go on to have a stellar career in film and television, earning international acclaim for her standout roles in both indie hits and Hollywood blockbusters. These days, she's better known for walking red carpets than holding up frozen pasta - but this delightful throwback proves even A-listers have to start somewhere. Can you guess who it is? It's none other than Toni Collette. Fans were stunned by the throwback, which recently resurfaced online, with many taking to social media to share their surprise over the actress' early work. 'She's such a good actress she could almost anything hehe,' one fan wrote. 'I remember the ad – but didn't realise who it was,' another user commented. A third added: 'That's good acting because it looks disgusting!' The ad has since become a viral sensation, with many praising Collette's natural screen presence even in a 30-second commercial. It's not the first time Collette's early career has resurfaced in unexpected ways. She famously got her big break in 1994's Muriel's Wedding, which recently made it's way back into cinemas for the Sydney Film Festival earlier this month. A genuine A-lister, Collette made her name starring in The Sixth Sense, which won her an Oscar nomination. She has also had starring turns in About a Boy and Little Miss Sunshine, to Knives Out. Collette's latest role is in Mickey 17, directed by Bong Joon Ho, whose black-comedy thriller Parasite swept the 2020 Oscars. In March, she was in London to start filming a top-secret project.
