Indian-origin, Democratic Mayoral frontrunner
Zohran Mamdani
on Monday reacted to the Midtown Manhattan office shooting from Uganda saying he was "heartbroken" by the deadly incident.
Sharing a post on X Mamdani said, "I'm heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in midtown and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts.
"
"Grateful for all of our first responders on the ground," he added.
Mamdani is currently in Uganda, celebrating his wedding at a heavily guarded private estate in the upscale Buziga Hill area near Kampala.
A mass shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office tower on Monday evening left five people dead, including a New York City police officer, and the suspect, with a sixth victim critically injured.
The suspected gunman, identified as Shane Tamura from Las Vegas died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.
Mayor Eric Adams called the attack a "senseless act of violence" and said officials are still working to understand the motive. "We lost four souls to another act of senseless violence," Adams said at a late-night briefing, excluding the gunman from the death toll.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed Tamura had a "documented mental health history," but no clear motive has been established yet. "We are working to understand why he targeted this particular location," she added.
The shooting unfolded at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent high-rise that houses major institutions including Blackstone, the National Football League, and the Irish Consulate.
Surveillance footage showed Tamura pulling up in a double-parked black BMW, stepping out with an M-4-style rifle, and walking into the building.
According to Tisch, Tamura immediately opened fire at the entrance, shooting a uniformed officer before turning the weapon on others inside.
A woman who tried to flee was gunned down, followed by a security guard behind a desk and another man in the lobby.
Tamura was armed with a .223-caliber Palmetto State Armory AR-15-style assault rifle. Police later found a revolver, ammunition, and extra magazines in his vehicle.
The shooting took place in a busy part of Midtown Manhattan, just north of Grand Central Terminal and close to St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Local television footage showed people evacuating the office building with their hands raised. The building, located on Park Avenue, houses major firms including Blackstone and the Irish Consulate.

Mahua Moitra recalls the time when she sent a 'love note' to Mirzapur's 'Kaleen Bhaiya'; here's what happened next
Agencies TMC MP Mahua Moitra Politicians aren't immune to celebrity crushes—and Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra just offered proof. In a refreshingly candid interview, Moitra admitted she has long admired actor Pankaj Tripathi, so much so that she once wrote him a note asking him out for coffee. Speaking to India Today, the outspoken parliamentarian shared her fondness for Bollywood and named films like Vicky Donor and the Munnabhai series among her favourites. But it was Tripathi, best known for playing the menacing yet charismatic Kaleen Bhaiya in Amazon Prime Video's hit series Mirzapur, who she called her 'crush'. 'I'm a big fan of Pankaj Tripathi,' she said, adding, 'I wrote him a note and asked for coffee.'As she recounted, the note was passed to Tripathi via a TV anchor who was scheduled to interview him. But the meeting never materialised. 'He never responded,' Moitra said with a laugh, suggesting that perhaps the actor—who lives in Alibaug—is 'not the kind of guy who meets people for coffee.' The MP said her admiration for Tripathi didn't end there. She even turned to fellow Lok Sabha MP and Bhojpuri actor Ravi Kishan for help. 'I asked Ravi Kishan to make me talk to him. Ravi arranged a phone call,' she recalled. But when the call finally happened, she was too starstruck to say much. 'I was so shy that I forgot I'd even written him a note!' Pankaj Tripathi, known for his nuanced performances in critically acclaimed films like Newton, Stree, Mimi, and Masaan, has become one of India's most respected and versatile actors. His portrayal of Kaleen Bhaiya—a ruthless kingpin with a calm demeanour—in Mirzapur earned him cult status and a fan base that clearly includes admirers in the highest political the coffee never happened, Moitra's fangirl moment has certainly added a charming footnote to the actor's ever-growing legacy—and reminded many that behind the sharp political speeches are people with relatable soft spots.

India's tax department investigating Jane Street over possible tax treaty misuse, sources say
Synopsis Indian tax authorities are investigating Jane Street for potential tax violations related to derivative trades. The probe centers on whether the firm used its Singapore entities to evade taxes, leveraging the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement. This follows a SEBI ban alleging market manipulation. TIL Creatives India's tax authorities are investigating whether Jane Street violated tax laws by booking profits via its Singapore entities on its derivative trades in the Indian market, three sources briefed on the matter said. Searches at the U.S. trading firm's India offices by the income tax department have been underway since last week, sources have said. A government source who was briefed on the matter later said that Jane Street staff were not cooperating. The tax authorities' enquiries follow a temporary ban by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the market regulator, which publicly alleged that the firm manipulated stock indexes through its derivatives positions. Jane Street has denied the SEBI allegations, but has not made any public comments so far on the tax investigation. The firm did not respond to a Reuters request sent to its U.S. headquarters for comment on Monday on the latest developments. India's income tax department did not respond to Reuters request for comment. Tax authorities are investigating whether Jane Street violated the General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR) by using the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) between India and Singapore to evade taxes on large profits it made on Indian derivative trades, all three sources said. The sources declined to be named because they were not authorised to speak to the media. The DTAA is designed to prevent residents from being taxed twice, while the GAAR gives a country the power to deny a particular tax benefit if it is being used solely for tax avoidance. The Indian tax authorities are looking into whether Jane Street booked larger profits on its derivatives positions in the Indian market via its Singapore entities as a way to reduce the tax burden, all three sources briefed on the matter added. SEBI's July 4 ban order showed that Jane Street made more than $4 billion trading in India from January 2023 to May 2025. Jane Street's two India entities - JSI Investments and JSI2 Investments - made a profit of 39.35 billion Indian rupees ($448.23 million), Jane Street Singapore made a profit of 256 billion rupees ($2.92 billion) and its Hong Kong entity, Jane Street Asia Trading, made a profit of 69.30 billion Indian rupees ($789.39 million), the order showed. If the tax department's probe shows the tax rules have been breached, Jane Street could be issued with a tax demand, the third source said. Tax authorities are trying to access Jane Street's accounts, which are maintained overseas, they added. The second source said SEBI had provided the tax department with the profit and loss details of four Jane Street group entities the regulator had named in its orders. SEBI did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

‘Setting a plan of action for next 5 year…': PM Modi hails ‘historic day' on Philippines President's Delhi visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met Philippines President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr at Hyderabad House, wherein their talks were aimed at further cementing the friendship between the two nations. After the meet, addressing reporters, PM Modi hailed 'a historic day for bilateral relations' between the two Asian nations. PM Narendra Modi said, 'We are taking India to the levels of a strategic partnership. This will give our relationship a new speed and depth, and give strength to our relationship in the Defence and Security Sector.' 'In the last few years, there has been progress in our relations in all sectors- trade, defence, maritime, health, security, food security, development partnership, and people-to-people ties. It is a matter of great happiness that we are setting a plan of action for the next five years.' PM Modi said adding, 'Till July 2027, the Philippines is India's country coordinator. In 2026, you will preside over the ASEAN Chair'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his appreciation for the Philippines' decision to grant visa-free entry to Indian tourists, describing it as a welcome move. He announced that, in a reciprocal gesture, India would offer free e-visas to tourists from the Philippines. PM Modi further stated that efforts would be undertaken this year to establish direct flight connectivity between India and Manila, enhancing travel and tourism ties between the two nations. India and the Philippines have conducted joint naval exercises for the first time in the disputed South China Sea — a significant military deployment that has provoked a strong reaction from China, according to an Associated Press report. Beijing has long-standing territorial disputes with both Asian democracies and a historic regional rivalry with New Delhi. The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, General Romeo Brawner, stated on Monday that the two-day joint naval sail and exercises, which commenced on Sunday, were successfully carried out, the AP report added. Brawner expressed hope that Filipino forces would engage in further joint manoeuvres with the Indian military in the future. When asked whether Chinese forces had responded in any way, General Brawner remarked, 'We did not experience any untoward incident but we were still shadowed. We expected that already.' This is the first visit by the President of Philippines, a Southeast Asian country to India since he assumed office back in 2022, marking a significant milestone, as his visit aligns with the celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations. He is accompanied by First Lady Louise Araneta Marcos and a high-level delegation, including several Ministers from his Cabinet. Philippines President is visiting India from August 4-8.
