The Tarn Taran assembly seat fell vacant following the demise of AAP MLA Dr Kashmir Singh Sohal on June 27. Although the seat has been declared vacant, the date for the byelection is yet to be announced.
Tarsem said they were in touch with Khalra and wanted her to be the party candidate, but it is yet to be finalised. The Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) was launched on Jan 14 during Maghi Mela at Sri Muktsar Sahib. A five-member executive committee comprising Surjit Singh, Tarsem Singh, Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, Amarjit Singh, and Harbhajan Singh Tur was constituted to run its affairs until the election of a regular president of the party.
Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, son of Indira Gandhi assassin Beant Singh who won the Lok Sabha election from Faridkot in 2024, said Tarsem Singh will take a final call on the issue.

Opposition parties slam AAP govt over daylight murder of Abohar bizman
Opposition parties in Punjab on Monday lashed out at the AAP government over the broad daylight murder of a businessman by some unknown bikers in Abohar. Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar said the killing was an 'eerie reminder' of Punjab's law and order collapsing. (HT File) The parties termed the killing another reminder that the state's law and order has 'totally collapsed' and demanded that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann resign from the post. Earlier in the day, a businessman was shot dead in a busy market by three unknown bikers, police said. Sanjay Verma, a co-owner of the 'New Wear Well Gents Tailor' showroom, was gunned down in broad daylight near Bhagat Singh Chowk, a bustling commercial area in Abohar. Verma had just stepped out of his car near his showroom when he was shot several times. As the three assailants tried to drive away, their motorcycle skidded. They ran for some distance before they snatched another bike from a commuter and escaped. Verma was rushed to the local civil hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Several trade associations have called for a complete shutdown of markets in protest against the killing. Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal said the law and order in Punjab has 'plummeted to its lowest point.' 'The shocking daylight murder of Sanjay Verma, owner of The New Wear Well Tailors in Abohar, underscores the prevailing jungle raaj. Businessmen and professionals including doctors, artists & athletes are facing grave threats from extortionists,' he said. 'I strongly condemn this brutal killing and offer heartfelt condolences to the Verma family. The perpetrators must be arrested immediately and brought to justice,' Badal said in a post on X. Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar said the killing was an 'eerie reminder' of Punjab's law and order collapsing. 'Deafening silence of the AAP government after each such killing only emboldens the gangsters. CM Bhagwant Mann must tell Punjabis who is responsible for this blot on Punjab's name. Wake up, it's already too late,' Jakhar said on X. Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa demanded the resignation of Mann. 'CM @BhagwantMann must resign! Punjab's law and order is in shambles. The govt must hold a serious discussion on public safety in the upcoming Assembly session,' Bajwa said. Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring alleged that Punjab was turning into a 'gangland' under the Aam Aadmi Party's rule. Warring also referred to a doctor, Aniljit Kambhoj, being shot at in Moga to condemn the state's law and order. '... In both the incidents criminal gangs are suspected to be involved. What is the @PunjabPoliceInd doing? This calls for stringent action lest the situation gets completely out of control,' Warring said on X.

All-party Tibet forum co-chair seeks global recognition for Dalai Lama's institution
New Delhi: Asenior functionary of the All Party Indian Parliamentary Forum for Tibet, a cross-party group of MPs, on Monday called for global recognition of the institution of Dalai Lalai and its right to choose his successor amid China's claim that it has the sole right to approve his heir. BJP MP Tapir Gao, a third-term Lok Sabha member from Arunachal East, noted that the Forum had, in its previous meetings, the last being in March this year, demanded Bharat Ratna for the Dalai Lama, whose 90th birthday was celebrated on July 6. 'The institution of the Dalai Lama is rooted in religious and cultural traditions of Tibetan Buddhists. China has absolutely no role in the matter. The world should recognise it,' said Gao, the co-convenor of the Forum. The forum members include MPs from different parties, including the BJP, Congress and the Trinamool Congress, and over 80 of them were signatories to the demand that the Dalai Lama should be conferred India's highest civilian award. Gao noted that he has raised the demand in the Lok Sabha in recognition of the Dalai Lama's dedication to peace, compassion, humanity and universal brotherhood. The Dalai Lama, the spiritual and temporal head of Tibetan Buddhists, had earlier said that the institution will continue and only its trust will have the authority to recognise the future reincarnation, who will succeed him. The Gaden Phodrang Trust was founded by the Office of Dalai Lama in 2015. China has, though, insisted that only it has the sole authority to recognise the successor. Thousands gathered in the main courtyard of Tsuglagkhang, the Dalai Lama temple, on Sunday to celebrate the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama, while greetings poured from across the world for the Tibetan spiritual leader.

Kyunki neta again abhineta, Smriti back as Tulsi
MUMBAI: Actor-politician Smriti Irani will be returning to play the role of Tulsi Virani in the reboot of Ektaa Kapoor's 2000s iconic daily soap, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. 'Some journeys come full circle, not for nostalgia, but for purpose. Returning to Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is not just a step back into a role, but a return to a story that redefined Indian television and reshaped my own life,' Smriti said in a statement. 'Today, I stand at a crossroads where experience meets emotion, and creativity meets conviction. I return not just as an actor, but as someone who believes in the power of storytelling to spark change, preserve culture, and build empathy,' she added. The show will to return to its original platform, Star Plus, on July 28. Other than Smriti, the serial will also star Amar Upadhyay, who will return in the role of Mihir. Hiten Tejwani, and Gauri Pradhan will also be seen reprising their roles from the show's original version. In a recent media interaction, Smriti revealed that there were talks about a reboot to the series in 2014, but she had to reject the offer because of her sojourn into politics. However, Ektaa took to social media to claim that such an idea wasn't in the works at all. She later deleted the post. Smriti, who served as Union minister across multiple portfolios from 2014 to 2024, lost the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Amethi to Sonia Gandhi family loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma by over 1.5 lakh votes, a constituency she had wrested from Rahul Gandhi in 2019. With her return to acting, does this mean a sabbatical from politics, or is it just a calm before the 2029 storm, Kyunki Actor Bhi Kabhi Politician Thi? 'Kyunki' aired from 2000 to 2008 and was the most successful serial of its time, with TRPs in double digits for many years. Straddled two powerful platforms in 25 years Smriti said she straddled two powerful platforms — media and public policy — in the last 25 years, adding both have their own impact with 'each demanding a different kind of commitment'
