T'ganu sees big jump in drug haul of RM62mil in first six months
Its chief, Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said the amount was a sharp increase compared to only RM1.32mil for the same period last year.
He said that during the same period this year, 7,832 arrests were made under various sections of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, including Section 39B, Section 39A (2) and Section 15(1)(a).
"Among the drugs seized were syabu, heroin, yaba pills, ketum leaves, cough syrup, ketum water, ganja, Erimin 5 pills and ecstasy pills," he said after the handover of case items from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department at the Terengganu police headquarters (IPK) here Tuesday (July 22).
Also present was Terengganu Criminal Investigation Department chief ACP Arsad Kamaruddin, who is also the state police acting deputy chief.
On another matter, Terengganu police disposed of 56,232.43g of drugs and 2,572.54 litres of illicit substances worth a total of RM1.1mil today, following a court order for cases completed in legal proceedings from 2001 to 2025.
On the subject of influencers, Mohd Khairi said the state police are wary of rogue traders who use their legitimate shopfronts as a cover for drug-related activities.
He said, however, only one cosmetics entrepreneur in Terengganu has so far been arrested for drug offences. The entrepreneur is a man known as 'Man Hidung' who has already been charged in court.
"Don't assume the police aren't aware. We know… and we are monitoring individuals who pose as cosmetics or beauty product sellers to distribute drugs. They will definitely be caught.
"Man Hidung was peddling drugs behind a legitimate business," he added. - Bernama

Timber worth RM1.1mil seized in Sabah
KOTA KINABALU: Timber worth RM1.1mil was seized en route to a wood factory in Ranau. In a raid dubbed Ops Bersepadu Khazanah, General Operations Force (GOF) personnel spotted two trailers along the Tambunan-Ranau road, near Kg Rondogung, at 1.30am on Thursday. Sabah GOF commander Datuk Abdul Rani Alias said the drivers were instructed to pull over for an inspection. 'Our personnel found a total of 59 timber logs worth RM1.189mil. The drivers, aged 43 and 59, failed to produce permits for the timber. 'This is a violation of the Sabah Forestry Department's regulations,' he said in a statement. Both men were detained and the logs as well as the trailers were seized. They would be handed over to the department for further action under the Sabah Forestry Enactment 1968. The timber is believed to have been taken from Tomani Tenom to a factory in Lohan, Ranau. Abdul Rani said GOF would continue to carry out more operations.

House arrest bill in final phase, says Home Minister
KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry is in the final phase of finalising a new bill relating to house arrest as an alternative to reducing overcrowding in prisons. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the working papers relating to the bill have been submitted to the Cabinet and have received policy approval. "The next process is to carry out an amendment matrix and the Home Ministry has to sit with the Attorney-General's Chambers and once that is done, we will table it. The issue is the definition of shackles, one interpretation of shackles (currently) is only handcuffs (but) I tend to interpret shackles as including devices. "But because there is a mistake in terms of interpretation, then let the drafters resolve it and I promise that as soon as they resolve it, I will return to the Cabinet to seek approval in terms of amendments," he said when winding up the motion for the Annual Report and Financial Statement of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) 2023 for the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday. He admitted that there is overcrowding in prisons, with the latest number of prisoners increasing to 83,808, exceeding the original capacity of the prison which is 76,311. He said that among the causes of the congestion is remand detention where 65 to 70 per cent of the total prisoners are involved in drug-related cases under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 involving Section 15(1) (entering drugs into the body), Section 12(2) (possession of drugs in small quantities) and Section 33C (repeat offence). He said the implementation of house arrest with electronic monitoring is among the solutions currently being formulated to address the issue of remand detention which contributes to 35 per cent of the congestion. Regarding refugees handled by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Saifuddin Nasution said the Home Ministry believes there is a need for an element for check and balance on the refugee registration process carried out by UNHCR. He said that currently, the process is carried out entirely by UNHCR without the involvement of any government security agency such as the police, Immigration Department or other agencies for verification and monitoring purposes. "Their method is all by themselves, the interview, assessment and the issuance of the card. Are there government agencies to verify and cross-check? The answer is no, it is all up to UNHCR's consideration," he said. Meanwhile, Saifuddin also reminded all participants who will be joining the rally in the federal capital this Saturday to comply with the law and the security guidelines. He stressed that the government remains committed to the principle of freedom of expression, but it must be implemented responsibly and without causing any racial and religious tension. -- BERNAMA

Sabah GOF seizes illegal timber worth over RM1.1mil, two detained

'The male drivers, aged 43 and 59, failed to produce permits for the timber and are believed to have breached the Sabah Forestry Department regulations,' he said in a statement. The two suspects were nabbed while the logs as well as the vehicles worth RM2.68mil were seized and handed over to the Sabah Forestry Department for further action under the Sabah Forestry Enactment 1968. Abdul said they believe the timber was taken from Tomani Tenom, and headed to a factory in Lohan, Ranau. He said operations against illegal logging and other crimes will be strengthened, he added.
