Selectivity is key as markets enter narrow, range-bound phase: Dipan Mehta

Economic Times11-06-2025

But one thing I can tell you and stress in a very important way is that whatever the outcome of 9th July is or whatever the way the market is going to move forward, it is going to get far more narrow and selective.
Synopsis Dipan Mehta suggests that the market's consolidation follows the RBI's positive policy move, anticipating improved corporate earnings due to lower tax rates and a potentially better monsoon. The market's future hinges on the outcome of the US-China trade talks and potential tariffs. Mehta emphasizes a shift towards selective stock picking as market movements become more narrow. "All the expectation of this particular major event because once this uncertainty is over and done with, only then the real trend will play through because if there are going to be heightened tariffs, then you can expect all equity markets including ours to drift lower, maybe even crack further from these levels," says Dipan Mehta, Director, Elixir Equities.
ADVERTISEMENT Firstly, help us with your take on the markets because post the policy the markets did see a great run up but seem to be consolidating. How do you see this consolidation and which other sectors do you believe can participate in the next rally?
Dipan Mehta: So, the kind of googly which was bowled by the RBI was very well received by the market and what is supposed to happen three or four months down the line actually has happened last week itself and that has been something which is very positive and we have seen the current coming through in lot of the lenders because of that and eventually, it will percolate down to all the other industries which are dependent on lending to grow their business, like say, real estate or automobiles or capital goods for that matter.
So, I think that what was a much needed boost because earnings were flagging and now with this particular step taken by the RBI, we should definitely see improvement in corporate earnings which will also be, I would say, benefited by lower tax rates as the tax cuts will also have already kicked in and maybe a better monsoon as well, because at these levels the markets are, I would say, pretty much in fair price to slightly on the expensive zone and for the stock market prices to move up from these levels we need a lot of support coming through from corporate earnings and all the various aspects and the variables are in place to lift corporate earnings but till that does not happen I would not bet on the market crossing the previous highs, till then you may expect sideways movement, but at the same time looking at the corporate earnings, I would say, a lot of selectivity has to now come into stock selection and portfolio management and last but not the least we have this 9th July deadline of the 90-day pause getting over for Trump tariffs, how that will play out also will have a major bearing on the price movements over the next few months or quarters.
But as an India strategist, I mean, what should your strategy be because the big overhang continues to be what is going to happen on tariffs. Yes, there is some headway now between US and China, but it is still not a done deal. You do not know which party is going to slap how much tariff on what product.
Dipan Mehta: That is right. I think for the time being that is the reason why the markets also are pinned down and are moving in a very narrow range. So, all the expectation of this particular major event because once this uncertainty is over and done with, only then the real trend will play through because if there are going to be heightened tariffs, then you can expect all equity markets including ours to drift lower, maybe even crack further from these levels. But if the tariffs are reasonable and kind of business as usual and if we have the support of corporate earnings, then global markets including ours will start to move up. So, it is like inflection point for the entire global equity markets, which way it will tip we cannot say because President Trump is very unpredictable and how it will play out is anybody's guess. All we can hope for is a positive outcome. But one thing I can tell you and stress in a very important way is that whatever the outcome of 9th July is or whatever the way the market is going to move forward, it is going to get far more narrow and selective. Right from 2020 to September 24, it was like all round bull run, everything did well, all portfolios did well. I think that there is going to be a change over there from September 24 onwards and then in this financial year and calendar year as well stocks will get very selective, sectors will get selective and within sectors also stocks will be moving on in a selective way. So, it is going to really test our stock picking skills in the next few months and quarters.

After failed listing attempts in the US and UK, China's Shein to file confidentially for Hong Kong IPO: What makes this a rare move for Chinese company

Shein, the China-founded fast-fashion giant, is reportedly set to file a draft prospectus confidentially for an initial public offering (IPO) in Hong Kong, potentially as early as this week, according to a report in Reuters that quotes three sources familiar with the matter. The move, as per Reuters exclusive report, could make Shein one of the largest IPOs in Hong Kong this year. The IPO also reportedly marks a rare departure from the city's norm of public IPO filings and follows Shein's failed listing attempts in the U.S. and London. What is confidential IPO filing The confidential filing, expected by Monday (June 30), would allow Shein to shield sensitive financial and operational details during the regulatory review process, a practice more common in the U.S. than in Hong Kong. This approach requires a waiver from the Hong Kong stock exchange's standard listing rules, which typically mandate public disclosure of IPO documents. The exchange may grant such exemptions for secondary listings or spinoffs from companies listed on recognized overseas exchanges like the NYSE or Nasdaq. Shein, however, is pursuing a primary listing, making the confidential approach unusual for the city, where high-profile IPOs like Xiaomi and Meituan involved public filings. Shein, valued at $66 billion in its 2023 pre-IPO fundraising round, must secure approval from the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) before proceeding with the Hong Kong IPO . The company will need to file with the CSRC within three days of submitting its Hong Kong application, in line with Chinese regulations for offshore listings. It remains unclear whether Shein has received preliminary approval from the CSRC. The Hong Kong stock exchange and Shein declined to comment, and the CSRC did not respond to inquiries. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like USDJPY đang đi lên không? IC Markets Đăng ký Undo How Shein has been impacted by the US-China trade war The filing comes as Shein navigates challenges from the U.S.-China trade war, with new U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods and the end of duty-free treatment for e-commerce parcels impacting its largest market. Shein, which sells low-cost apparel like $5 dresses and $10 jeans in 150 countries, shifted its headquarters to Singapore in 2022 but relies on a network of 7,000 Chinese suppliers, subjecting it to Beijing's IPO oversight. The company has also faced allegations of forced labor in its supply chain, which it denies, stating it prohibits suppliers from using Chinese cotton in U.S.-bound products. When Shein's attempt to list in the New York exchange failed Shein's pivot to Hong Kong follows an unsuccessful bid to list in the U.S. in late 2023. The company filed for a New York IPO but failed to secure CSRC approval, Reuters previously reported. The attempt was further complicated by U.S. regulatory scrutiny and trade tensions, including accusations from lawmakers and activists that Shein's supply chain involves forced labor in Xinjiang, a claim the company has rejected. The U.S. ban on imports linked to forced labor added pressure, and Shein's valuation dropped by a third from 2022 to 2023 amid these challenges. After the U.S. listing stalled, Shein explored a London IPO but was unable to gain Chinese regulatory approval, prompting the shift to Hong Kong as a more viable listing venue. A successful Hong Kong IPO could bolster the city's status as a global fundraising hub, which saw $12.8 billion in IPOs and secondary listings in the first half of 2025. Shein's listing, however, hinges on navigating regulatory hurdles and addressing concerns about its supply chain and the impact of U.S. tariffs, which could influence its final valuation. After years of burn, Slice looks to turn profitable in FY26

Three years after a regulatory crackdown disrupted its core business, fintech startup Slice says it has turned profitable on a monthly basis and is targeting full-year profitability in FY26. The turnaround follows its transition into a regulated bank after its final merger with North East Small Finance Bank (NESFB) in October 2024. Slice was among several fintechs forced to stop offering credit line offerings via prepaid payment instruments (PPI) wallets after the Reserve Bank of India's 2022 circular. This effectively shut down Slice's popular card offering, which had gained traction among younger Indian users. Following its acquisition and merger with NESFB, Slice has stabilised its operations, consolidated assets, and transitioned into a deposit-funded, digital-first bank, founder and executive director Rajan Bajaj told Mint. 'We are now PAT-positive on a monthly basis. That was a milestone we had set for ourselves after the merger, and we have been able to achieve it quite early," Bajaj said. However, the small finance bank has not yet disclosed audited financials for FY24, and the profitability target remains based on internal metrics. Slice saw its revenue surge in FY23, reaching ₹847 crore, a threefold increase compared to the previous year. However, this growth was accompanied by a significant rise in losses, reaching ₹406 crore, a 59.8% increase from FY22. 'We have converted into a public entity now, we just haven't listed yet," Bajaj said. 'As a bank, you have to list after a certain point. We want to do that in the next 3–4 years." Full banking status Slice's evolution from a non-bank lender into a full-stack bank comes at a time when several fintech peers are still grappling with regulatory headwinds. The RBI has turned down other applications for banking licences, including that of Navi, making Slice's route—via the merger with an existing bank—an exception. With NESFB's licence, Slice has access to core banking infrastructure, the ability to raise retail deposits, and offer regulated credit products. 'We've converted into a public entity, we just haven't listed yet," he said, noting that banks are required to go public after a certain point. Slice aims to list within 3–4 years. According to Bajaj, the bank is onboarding approximately 3 lakh customers per month since October and claimed the bank has doubled its deposit base post-merger, though the actual value of deposits was not disclosed. One of Slice's key products is a repo-rate-linked savings account, which passes on 100% of the prevailing repo rate to depositors. Interest is calculated daily and credited directly to users' accounts. 'Most banks don't give the full repo rate to customers. They offer 2.5–4%. We're changing that," Bajaj said. This comes at a time when the RBI's third consecutive rate cut, bringing the repo rate to 5.5% in June, has prompted banks to reduce FD interest rates, impacting deposits. UPI-linked credit card Slice is betting big on a UPI-linked credit card aimed at India's 300 million underserved but credit-worthy users. 'We think the credit card product is going to get redesigned for India, just like payments got redesigned in the last 10 years," Bajaj said. The product allows users to make QR code-based UPI payments using their approved credit limit. Bajaj said about 5 million users have accessed Slice credit so far, and half of them were new-to-credit customers. Earlier this year, NPCI chief Dilip Asbe underscored the push to onboard an additional 200–300 million users to UPI to 'break their cash memory," pointing to the potential size of the addressable market. Digital branchesSlice has opened its first UPI-led digital bank branch in Bengaluru's Koramangala, featuring a Slice-branded UPI ATM that allows cardless cash deposits and withdrawals using any UPI app. 'You don't have to carry your debit card. That's a relic of the past," Bajaj said. While banks like SBI and Hitachi have previously piloted UPI ATMs, Slice plans to scale aggressively with installations across 600 districts, including rural areas. Bajaj noted that earlier pilots suffered from low visibility and uptake. Slice primarily competes with other small finance banks and potentially traditional banks in the digital banking space, apart from other credit card players in fintech. The bank is also expanding into merchant-facing infrastructure, such as current accounts, QR-code-based collections, and faster settlement cycles, in a bid to become the primary digital bank layer for UPI users. 'To build a true UPI credit card ecosystem, you have to solve the problem end-to-end, for both consumers and merchants." On future fundraising, Bajaj said Slice is not actively seeking external capital at the moment, citing strong deposit inflows and capital adequacy. 'We're not doing any formal discussions right now. But as and when we need capital, we will raise," he said. Since its inception in 2016, the company has raised close to $342 million in multiple funding rounds from investors such as 360 One, Insight Partners, and Tiger Global Management, among others.

Amul becomes top Indian food brand, Mother Dairy second: Check full list

Gujarat's dairy cooperative Amul has retained its position as India's top food brand with a brand value of $4.1 billion, according to the latest Brand Finance report. Delhi-based Mother Dairy followed in second place, with a brand value of $1.15 billion. The ranking by UK-based consultancy Brand Finance places Britannia at third, Karnataka's Nandini dairy cooperative at fourth, and FMCG major Dabur at fifth in the list of India's top food brands. Amul, marketed by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), also improved its standing in Brand Finance's list of top 100 Indian brands across all industries, securing the 17th rank. Mother Dairy climbed six places to reach the 35th position, up from 41st in the previous edition. Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF, attributed the achievement to collective farmer efforts and consumer trust. 'It reflects the collective efforts of millions of dairy farmers and our unwavering commitment to providing high-quality, affordable food and dairy products to consumers,' he said. 'As Amul continues to grow and expand its footprint, both in India and internationally, this achievement reinforces our responsibility to uphold the trust placed in us by generations of Indian households,' Mehta added. Manish Bandlish, Managing Director of Mother Dairy, called the recognition 'a testament to our collective efforts,' and dedicated it to the company's consumers, farmers, partners, and employees. 'Our rise among top five Indian food brands and also in India's top 100 brands across industries reflects more than numbers — it reflects the trust earned, relevance sustained, and the resilience of a brand that continues to evolve,' he said. Earlier, in an interview with Business Standard, Bandlish had talked about the expansion plan of the company, saying, 'The board has already approved around ₹1,500 crore of investment combined in terms of Safal and dairy.' In FY25, Mother Dairy has seen FY25 close at revenues of ₹17,400 crore with a 16 per cent growth.
