Punjab school education minister Harjot Singh Bains on Saturday announced a ₹400 crore plan to revamp computer labs in government schools. While addressing the teachers, Bains highlighted the transformative strides in the state's education system, noting that the government schools are now globally recognised. He also said that the third batch of teachers would be sent abroad for training, and the selection would be based solely on merit.
Additionally, the minister highlighted initiatives, such as promotion for lecturers, appointment of 400 new principals and improvements in school infrastructure, including increased access to proper seating and sanitation facilities.
Furthermore, the education minister stated that an impressive 845 government school students qualified the highly competitive National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), while 265 students successfully cleared the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)-Mains this year. This showcases the school education department's commitment to fostering academic excellence and empowering students to excel in the country's most challenging competitive exams, he said.
The minister described the 'Dialogue with Teachers' initiative as a pioneering platform where the administration actively listens to and values teachers' insights, fostering a collaborative approach to education reform.

Digital library initiative launched in all high schools of Vypeen constituency

Kochi: Speaker A N Shamseer stated that the digital library initiative introduced in all high schools of the Vypeen constituency was highly commendable. He was speaking after inaugurating the digital libraries across all high schools in Vypeen at an event held at St Mary's High School in Pallippuram, on Tuesday. He also emphasised the need to implement the initiative in all schools across all constituencies. "Students must use this system diligently. This is a crucial period in their character formation. They should read and learn with focus, avoiding negative influences prevalent in society," he said. "If we can help children develop a good character now, that will stay with them for life," he added. The speaker also stressed the need to include the Constitution as part of curriculum alongside academic subjects. "Every Indian citizen has the right to choose, practise and propagate any religion. Unfortunately, we are witnessing situations where these rights are being questioned. At a time when mythology is being used to overshadow science, we must nurture rational thinking and critical reasoning in our children," he noted. According to Vypeen MLA K N Unnikrishnan, it was the first time in Kerala that all high schools within a single constituency have been equipped with digital libraries. "The e-libraries offer a wide range of books from the works of renowned senior authors to writings by emerging young writers. They are also designed to greatly benefit aspirants preparing for competitive exams like NEET, JEE among others," said Unnikrishnan.

‘One-sided monologue, no discussion': Harjot Bains terms Centre's NEP event in Delhi ‘disappointing'

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Tuesday virtually laid the foundation stone of infrastructure projects worth Rs 200.99 crore at the Central University of Punjab (CUP), Bathinda, an event that Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said was 'disappointing' and a 'one-sided monologue'. Pradhan laid the stone during the Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Samagam 2025 (ABSS-2025) in New Delhi, commemorating the fifth anniversary of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Bains attended the event in Delhi along with CUP Vice-Chancellor Prof Raghavendra P Tiwari. The Union minister virtually laid the foundation stone for five infrastructure projects, funded through the Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA). These include academic block, 600-seater boys hostel, 400-seater girls hostel, 100-seater international students hostel and V-C's residence. Several of these buildings are designed in compliance with GRIHA-IV norms, incorporating green, energy-efficient, and sustainable features such as sensor-based lighting, solar energy systems, aseismic structures, zero-waste water systems, and full accessibility for differently abled persons. Addressing the gathering virtually, Pradhan said, 'NEP 2020 has reached classrooms, campuses, and communities, ushering reforms in early childhood care, foundational literacy, and holistic education'. He lauded the proactive role of higher education institutions in implementing NEP 2020, particularly in advancing multidisciplinary education, digital inclusion, skill development, and inclusive learning. He highlighted the notable improvements in rural learning outcomes through initiatives like the NIPUN Bharat Mission and emphasized that this progress is the result of collective efforts by educators, students, institutions, and state governments. V-C Tiwari said that these developmental projects will propel CUP towards becoming a world-class institution with state-of-the-art facilities for teaching, research, and student well-being. Bains, however, said that as Punjab's education minister he was 'deeply disappointed' by the event held at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi. 'Education Ministers from across India were invited—but the entire event turned into a one-sided monologue. No discussion at all. This should have been a platform to address: attacks on regional languages like CBSE excluding Punjabi as a main subject (reversed only after Punjab's strong protest). NEP's deeper agenda of eroding states' rights. No national roadmap for AI, coding, data science in education,' Bains said in a post on X. Talking about the July 25 roof collapse at a school in Rajasthan's Jhalawar in which seven students were killed, Bains said it was 'most painful' that there neither was any mention of the incident nor any dialogue on preventing such incidents. 'Such events, without honest dialogue on education, remain ceremonial—not transformational,' he added.

Centre encroaching on rights of states under guise of NEP: Punjab minister Bains

New Delhi, Punjab's education minister Harjot Singh Bains on Tuesday alleged that the central government was "encroaching" on the rights of states through the new education policy. Centre encroaching on rights of states under guise of NEP: Punjab minister Bains Addressing the Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam organised by the Union Ministry of Education at Bharat Mandapam here, he said as education is a concurrent subject between the Centre and the states, the central government is overpowering the state authority through its new education policy. The minister highlighted that despite Punjabi being one of the 22 scheduled languages under the Constitution and being widely spoken and studied in several states other than Punjab, the Central Board of Secondary Education had initially included it as an optional subject alongside languages like Thai, German and Mandarin. He said that it was only after the Punjab government registered its strong protest that Punjabi was included as a main subject. He said that the Centre has maintained that the NEP would promote regional languages, but contrary to these claims, the Centre placed the regional languages under the category of optional subjects, which is undermining the status of regional languages. According to a state government statement, the minister said that the Punjab government has already announced the framing of its own education policy and it will be ready soon. He said that the state will not tolerate any steps of the Centre that "undermine Punjab, Punjabiyat and Punjabi language under the guise of the NEP". Bains said Punjab is working sincerely towards the holistic development of education in the state. The minister highlighted that students from government schools in Punjab are excelling at the national level in various fields of education and competitive exams, bringing pride to the state, the statement said Bains said that during this event, there was no discussion on the tragic collapse of a school building in Rajasthan and even a two-minute silence was not observed on the death of innocent children, "which is very unfortunate". He said that in this conference, important issues like mid-day meal, slary hike for workers and increasing the funds for school uniforms were not discussed. He said new methods of education, blockchain, artificial intelligence, digital learning and other issues were not even touched.
